Is it though? While the backlash wasn’t like it was for say, Halo 5, I think a lot of the Reach backlash gets downplayed by the pro Reach side. I definitely remember a lot of us heavily disliked Reach. Or how about all the way back to Halo 2. Has any other game received such backlash that someone created a whole site dedicated to talking about how it got everything wrong? Or am I the only Halo fan at this point who remembers that halo2sucks.com existed? Almost every single Halo game released since Combat Evolved had some kind of backlash from part of the series’ fanbase.
I like halo infinite.
Halo infinite has a lot of problems.
Most of these problems can be sourced to microsoft level decisions.
Halo infinite is salvageable.
But it will require the sacrifice of sacred cows.
It’s unfortunately true, it really did break my heart that I thought Halo: Infinite was bring back Halo from the Grave
I still like Halo: Infinite, it’s just sad how this game is turning out
Agreed. But sadly it was the last nail to seal the coffin.
Hopefully forge brings back some form of love. But the rest of the game besides the campaign is a total mess.
You are telling the truth, Fos. Right on. I hope 343 will reorganize the crap out of their plans for Halo: Infinite…
I feel like I’m going insane. Does anyone actually remember what Halo 2’s forums were like for the entirety of that game’s lifespan? Constant rage about dual wielding, pistol nerf, grenade efficacy, no health bar, monetization strategy (holy hell the saltiness over Halo 2 having a paid map pack), playing as an elite (as well as elite’s speaking english)…
I feel like I’m missing stuff, but I can’t remember a time when the Halo community wasn’t infinitely salty/negative about each game after CE.
Infinite needs a decent bit of work (they definitely need to put their foot on the gas to get more systemic changes out), but it’s hardly a “disaster.” All the major issues with the game are system side, not content/gameplay. And changing systems is much easier (but not faster) than changing gameplay
How do I start a new Topic? I don’t find the Option anywhere.
Deskstop browser: Scroll up and click the ‘Home’ button. Look to the right, below the search box for a button labelled ‘+ New Topic’
Much like Fos, I started using forums around late 06’ when I was burning out of playing H2 and getting hype for H3 and the 360 in general. As someone who was more of a lurker on Bnet as well as competitive forums, I can say without a shadow of a doubt that while the H3 and Reach era had a good amount of negative criticism, it wasn’t the ‘defeated’ vibe that has gotten increasingly worse on the forums since around 2013/14.
It wasn’t this unrelenting negative tone that placed blame and desire to see the dev fail like it has been with 343. I remember more activity, more creativity, more connection and positivity during that time. These are important, but they need to happen organically, from people actually enjoying the game, not trying to compensate. I do realise my activity here has been a source of negativity, but if people like me stopped posting, the vibe would still exist. The community at large feels this way because of how the games were handled, this wasn’t the case with 2, 3 or Reach.
I would also say that this website (and possibly twitter which I don’t use) is a bastion for those that are the most hardcore pro-343 commenters on the internet. The reception is much worse on other community forums (which have been dying off), reddit, youtube etc.
This was not the case with Bnet which was a hub for those with the most negative opinions of the dev compared to the broader community. This still happens with Destiny, the most negative are on Bnet. This is not the case here, the most positive are here. Aside from some extreme holdouts, the players more likely to defend 343 are also dropping off or becoming negative here too, that’s different to the old Halo scene, which functioned more like LoL; the more positive communities were away from the official site.
As for the last sentence I don’t think that needs addressing but i’ll reinforce it anyway. The content/gameplay has also been a major issue, not just system side. Even those that are system side need such a rehaul they won’t be a quick fix.
- All of the BTB maps aren’t good, for vehicle play and in general
- the armour system won’t be an easy fix and it is bad
- the campaign was meh compared to other games
- the vehicles aren’t good to drive, shoot at or shoot, or look good
- the aiming doesn’t feel good
- the theatre isn’t functional and is made poorly
- the recoil and other systems make many weapons unfun
- a nice chunk of the weapon sandbox are clunky or useless
- many staple gametypes & playlists are missing
- there needs to be 10+ more maps
- outlines need to go
- collision needs to come back
- ranked needs a complete rehaul
- forge and custom games need to succeed desperately
- the menu-ing and interface isn’t flash
- file sharing is clunky again
- the social systems that were the crown jewel of Halo won’t come back
Infinite is a disaster where it matters most, player retention. It failed miserably to attract and/or hold onto a audience by failing to nail base expectations, promises, modern expectations, the things that would guarantee it a competent 7/10 game at least.
It failed the reveal, delayed a year, failed the beta, then failed on release, failed on post-launch content, failed on the multimedia content released beside it (TV show), failed on promises, will fail on 'the ‘10 year plan’, failed on learning from their mistakes from the 3 consecutive past failures. Failed so hard those responsible for failing have failed to stay with the company. It released 2x the length apart from normal releases, partly because they split resources patching up one of the worst failures in gaming that was left for 4 years (MCC), to then release one of the more noteworthy failures in a game generation that has failed more often than ever before.
