This Fall's New Games Renewed My Love for Halo 5

I’ll be the first to admit that I got accustomed to the game and felt entitled to criticize it, but buying and experiencing some of the other AAA releases throughout this fall has been a bit of a personal wake-up call about how much of a gem we truly have in this game.

If perfection is required before something can be appreciated, then nothing and no one would deserve it. But in two-year-old Halo 5, we have gunplay that is outrageously smooth, snappy, and intuitive, which many other big-budget shooters can’t match in 2017 even with their giant companies pumping development full of money. We have a technical foundation giving us the stability and frame rate we enjoy, and the magnitude of that achievement is only now being fully revealed as we run the game on better hardware. And now that microtransactions have been publicly declared by all major distributors as cemented in their road maps, we can look back and realize that–for two years now–we have had our cake and eaten it too: free life-extending content subsidized by microtransactions that do not form a viable alternative to gameplay/skill-based progression. The excellence of the Halo 5 experience has been remarkable.

Very thankful for this game and for all the enjoyment it’s provided. Happy Thanksgiving, Spartans!

I completely agree and it’s what keeps me wanting to play halo 5 each week and hoping that halo continues good gunplay. Happy thanksgiving to you too! (And the halo community.)

Thanks, have a happy and safe one!

I will always love halo. I can’t as much I use to with the older titles but that just might be because I’m older now and gaming is kinda getting bland for me but halo will always be my one true favorite series

Halo, in my estimation, is still the king of the FPS shooter market. Other games are fun in their own right, but all of them have major flaws in my book…

  • Destiny 2: Constantly grinding for better gear that you can then… constantly grind for better gear for. - COD WW2: Looks fun, but it’s still a run-and-gun shooter. - Star Wars Battlefront 2: Sounds like the game itself is fun, but the microtransactions / grind for better characters is brutal without spending real-world dollars.Halo: Competitive, casual, skill-based, variety, vehicles, grandiose story… I could go on and on.

Couldn’t agree more . Oh no wait I’ve just remembered the campaign sucked , heavy aim ruined most of this games life span for me and now the servers are unplayable so yet again I’m forced to play something else maybe some classic halo on mcc … whooops maybe not

If everybody was as kind as you, OP, and is willing to kindly point out the flaws in the current Halo games, this community would have to be the best gaming community out there. Period. Our problem is division on almost every topic, big or little. We expect Halo to be perfect in our own eyes, and when we don’t receive the unrealistic expectation of perfection we gripe about it. Remember that Bungie’s Halo titles were flawed as well.

I believe that Halo 5 is more flawed than any other Halo game out there, but it is still my favorite because of what wasn’t flawed. Some people say the game is unplayable; it runs fine for me and most other people.

When it comes down to it, games are supposed to be fun. I had a blast playing through Halo 5’s campaign, believe it or not, and I liked the campaign itself in spite of its several flaws (including but not limited to poor character development, the abundance of characters, and recurring Warden battles). The multiplayer is the most fun for me because I feel like a BA and each weapon works, unlike some other Halo titles where certain weapons were useless.

Happy Thanksgiving to you, OP, and to everyone else!

Nice post OP.

I don’t fully agree with what you said, but I understand where your going with it. I do agree that Halo 5 does get more hate then it deserves. For me the biggest problem with Halo 5 is the fact it has ADS style zooming, it’s dedicated servers aren’t up to par and the fact I still feel like 343I seems to change things just for the shake of change.

When things are working right, I agree that Halo 5 runs really well. The way they did mirotransactions also was the best possible way to do them in a triple AAA title I think by far. Just look how other triple AAA titles do them. COD is more and more pay to win by making the really good guns moreless only accessible but money only OR the odds are just so slim to get them normally that you just never will and they affect the whole game (unlike Halo 5) and then there’s games like SWBF2…we won’t even go there lol

Halo 5 definitely has it’s issues and I hope 343I learns from them in Halo 6, but overall Halo 5 is pretty solid game in it’s current state and holds up pretty well against a lot of other FPS I think.

When I play other shooters, I always end up coming back to Halo because I can’t find anything that can simulate it. I’m playing Battlefront 2 now and it can be fun, but also frustrating.

Well said, I do think H5 is very underrated as a competitive, skill-based arena shooter in the current market. The commitment from 343 to improving the game has been incredible. There’s been a few stumbles along the way, but the positives do outweigh the negatives. I just want them to get regional matchmaking right from day 1 with Halo 6. Also super excited about the weapon changes heading back to a more classic style with BR starts and slightly extended TTK.

If they can pull off a H6 launch with all the features and good stuff H5 currently has then it’s going to be HUGE.

Halo 5 gets way too much than it deserves and if it weren’t for the poor launch, the player base would probably be much higher.

> I got accustomed to the game and felt entitled to criticize it

As long as you know the game, you’re always entitled to criticize it.

I couldn’t agree more with OP–343 has done such an amazing job with H5! It’s safe to say that 343 is one of the best developers out there right now. We, as a community, are very lucky to have them carry Halo forward.

Halo is the best. Period.

Couldn’t disagree more, Halo 5 is awful and always has been. The Beta was good though.

I wont blindly pat H5 on the back for merits it doesnt deserve, but I still play on a near-monthly basis so it definitely has that going for it. But I dont agree with the mediocrity/uninterest of other games. Arguably if all you play is shooters, fine yeah, Halo 5 is still one of my favorites this gen. But I also have been enjoying my time in asscreed origins, WWII, Super Mario Odyssey and even the smaller games like Cuphead.

The only one that really makes Halo 5 look good is Battlefront 2. And this has been a huge year in general and Zelda Breath of the Wild is easily my GotY.

But to each their own of course. Halo 5 isnt bad (the campaign arguably is, but the gunplay and MP are ace) but I honestly would drop it for Halo 6 in a heartbeat with no remorse.

It’s the precision gun play and high time to kill that sets Halo apart. There’s nothing else like it. And I love Halo 5 movement.
