This actually needs repeating. The radar sucks.

Interesting idea to try to promote engagements by limiting radar range, but when you add sprint and thrusters and all other forms of new fast paced movement, it’s different. The engagement promotion thing 343 was saying maybe would’ve worked in the older halos when you couldn’t do much in the ways of moving other than running, but how could they have thought limiting radar would work in this game?! The spartan charge can almost completely make the distance of the “18m” radar it’s just bad. Sorry I know this has been posted every day since the games release a few months back but unless the radar is fixed or changed or something, the complaints will keep rolling in. I’m not trying to see this game fall into a niche market like halo 4 with its peak 30k population.

Yes it does suck now… and why did they change it? What purpose did changing it serve? 343 be like… Spartans now move way faster so let’s make the radar cover half the size… yeah sounds good to me… der der der… They should have either kept it as it always was or maybe made it cover a bit more ground if any thing.

Their Pro Team that literally changed everything that was good about the beta

I like the new radar it makes flanking crouching campers easier

It needs 25m range and an elevation indicator like previous games. I don’t understand why 343i took a step backwards. As it stands the radar is useless due to the high speeds enemies can cross the 18m current distance. There is never time to react and counter especially with Spartan charge.

the radar is not useless … its a radar that requires map awareness

Because 343 thought it would be a good idea to let ‘pros’ spearhead the gameplay development for a 90% casual player base.

Radar is alright but doesn’t effect me

It needs the above or below indicators like halo 4 more than it needs to have a wider range.

Its not a radar but a motion tracker and its garbage for some reason having to watch your back every second without getting shot in this fast paced game with thrusters, sprint, grenade spam, wide sword lunge, ground pound, spartan charge and all it does is show them when they are behind you or not at all. No motion tracker would be better than this distraction that’s not very useful.

There’s a Req for that…

Conspiracy Theory: They might have nerfed the default radar to make you want to use that Warzone armor mod more. /Tinfoil

I don’t even think the pros like the smaller radar… the pros didn’t make all the calls. Just like the power weapon call outs… no way the “pros” liked that… I don’t like the smaller radar or weapon call outs. For wanting Halo to be a more “competitive skill based” game they sure added some lame crutches.

There is an elevation indicator. If the enemy dot is faded, they are either above or below you. And there are very few areas where both could be a possibility.

At first I didn’t like it, but now that I’m used to it it’s better this way imo. It makes it possible to be stealthy even though everyone moves fast with the Spartan abilities.

So you like you can camp easier… lame…

I’m torn. On one hand it makes you more reliant on your team mates and knowing the map. On the other hand, for normal pubs (minus team Arena) that doesn’t exist so the mini map is very helpful. I think the best would be to remove it from Team Arena (shouldn’t be in comp but it’s not a gamebreaker) and go back to a past iteration of it for the other modes.

So the only viable strategy to the game is to perpetually sprint about the map? Camping in Halo, unless it’s corner camping, has never really been a major issue relative to other first person shooters.

In my opinion, I don’t mind the shorter radar. As someone who always played SWAT, I never used radar and tended to avoid gametypes that used it. With this change a lot more Arena gametypes are playable for me, though I stick to Warzone anyways. I do understand why people are mad, though, and honestly wouldn’t mind switching it back since more people seem to prefer it that way.

You have a radar? Mine just flashes 12:00 constantly.

You guys use the radar?

It’s not useless, but the heightened overall speed of the game really detracts from the Motion Tracker’s usefullness as you have a lot less time to notice and then react intelligently to the threat. Combined with the fact that the Motion Tracker is over 20% smaller than previous iterations and like the OP has stated, is almost useless against Spartan Charge, you lose a lot chances to react to immediate threats that speedily approach from an unfavorable angle.
Halo is about reacting and outplaying opponents and I feel that the default 18m Motion Tracker isn’t playing it’s part in helping the game retain its reactionary game-play especially with the shorter TTK for all weapons.

I would propose either increasing the range of the Motion Tracker to 20m (still 20% smaller than previous games) or reducing the range of Spartan Charge or perhaps even both and I would like to see the overall melee “lunge” range reduced as it feels like a crutch for players who are poor at aiming.

I’m just a fan though so maybe these are terrible ideas.
