So, as the title states, I’m thinking of buying Halo 5. I will probably play Warzone mostly (that’s what’s drawn me in) and dabble in Arena. Maybe some campaign with friends, but I can’t say I’ve really thought much about playing the story. I know I’m probably asking a very biased crowd, but should I?
Currently my game of choice is Destiny. I enjoy it but lately I’ve been logging in just to hang out with friends and do the same stuff over and over. I’m at a point where I can’t really progress my character much, if at all, without raiding and it’s getting hard to find the time to do so and as such I mostly stick to strikes and patrols.
Warzone really has me interested in Halo 5; the large scale battles that seem to have a possibility to go on for some time (with a point cap to keep matches from going forever), the mix of PvE and PvP, it seems very much like old-school Alterac Valley from WoW if anyone here knows what I’m talking about. I’d also play Arena, although I’m pretty terrible at true PvP (but getting better at least in Destiny) I still have fun doing it.
My only concerns are mostly to do with aiming and character customization. I’ve read a lot that aiming can be cumbersome due to an almost anti-aim-assist that creates a “deadzone” (?) when trying to hit enemy players. I assume this means that it actually gets more difficult to get your reticle on the enemy as you get closer? Is it really as bad as people say it is? Also, this is probably a really stupid question but can you fire your weapon while aiming down sites? I’m very much an ADS player instead of hip fire and if the answer is no, that might be a turn off to me.
Finally, character customization. I know that Halo isn’t like games like Destiny where you get various armor pieces and weapons and can pick and choose to customize your abilities/class/etc. I get that. However, is it easy to at least customize your Spartans cosmetic looks to any degree that can make you somewhat unique?
Sorry, I’m rather a Halo noob, having only played Halo 4 and not to any great degree so pardon me if these come across as idiotic questions. Thanks in advance!
It’s an awesome game if you like competitive shooters, go for it.
Customization in Halo 5 is similar to Destiny, yes.
And smart scope is similar to ADS, yes, so you can aim like that.
The aiming is hard for a competitive purpose. It aims a lot like halo 1, which I know you haven’t played, but a lot of gamers now aren’t used to that. I personally like it. It’s challenging.
Halo 5 is great fun but is very much a PVP focused game when it comes to multiplayer. I’ve been having a lot of fun with Warzones but with only 3 maps and 2 modes it’s definitely more of a side attraction (keep in mind that free DLC will pad this out with more maps and modes in the future). Customization of your Spartan is sparse compared to something like Destiny but it does offer a decent amount of offerings. You can customize your helmet, visor, chest piece, stance, assassination, primary/secondary colors and weapon skins. These are all purely cosmetic though and the color customization will only show up in FFA (every other mode defaults colors to Red and Blue for teams). There’s no customization of abilities nor classes in Halo 5. With that being said I’ve definitely noticed several different unique combinations online. There’s ADS but I still mostly rely on hip fire (most engagements in Arena for me seem to be close quarters and relying on ADS would probably get me killed). Personally I haven’t had any issues with the aiming. To me it feels different…but not in a bad way (I definitely notice the lower aim assist). If you plan on investing alot of time in PVP then definitely consider getting Halo 5…it’s been the best PVP experience I’ve had all year! If you’re more focused on the PVE aspect then definitely consider it as well. There’s a decent amount of content there with coop campaign and Warzones…just understand that’s not the main focus of the multiplayer.
I’ve put more hours into destiny than I care to share! I enjoy(ed) it and it had me hooked. I’m a longtime Halo fan and I’ve dug deep into the story. I started in the middle and went backwards… I had long sworn off consoles before someone gave me a broken 360. Started with Reach then ODST, Then H3, CE Anniversary, H2 PC… Story gives minor insight into Warzone but it’s not required. Armor customization can be accomplished through earned, awarded or issued Helmet, Armor, and Faceplates. There are many armor sets and they can all be interchanged with any helmet and faceplate combo. You select a background image and insignia. All of the afore mentioned items come in incremental rarity levels. You can earn unique insignias and banners. Once you’ve made or updated your selections you can adjust two color slide bars, one for the armor and the other for insignia/pattern. Destiny has been out for more than a year now and Bungie made some nice additions over time. This game is brand new and out of the gate there is only one race you can play, Human and your helmet is always on so you lose some uniqueness there. Additionally, you can earn and apply skins to weapon types that once again are basic at start to levels of increasingly rare items. Aiming. I loved Destiny’s action on XB1 after Halo 4 on XB360 it was crisper than Titanfall on XB1 and had a great feel to it. Regarding the aiming mechanics, there are many that complain and many justify that there is a skill gap due to the intentional drop in aim assist for competitive enthusiasts. I’m not all that skilled, especially under pressure but can often hold my own 1v1. With that in mind I love the way Halo 5 feels! I often miss but I can clearly see that it’s due to my control inputs and panic, in other words I know I’ll get better and have already seen some improvement. Custom games and unique user made games and maps have always been a killer feature for modern Halo games.
Bottom line:
Customization is there, but not as rich as Destiny (I personally don’t mind that). I think there will be more coming, possibly like armor and accessory add-ons that Reach had.
Warzone is fun, better played with communicative teams.
Story is not required. Unlike most games, especially FPS’s, Halo has a rich and deep universe that can be explored by the more than a dozen novels by top sci-fi writers as well as tons of videos available on waypoint and YouTube that are compilations of cut-scenes and unique and surprisingly diverse fan created media!. Story does help you to pick up the on the game mechanics and you can challenge yourself to play through on the toughest campaign modes, earn skulls, and gather all the intel for unique achievements.
I hope my post helps, Good Luck and see you on the battlefield! (it will be quite a while before I touch Destiny even though I still love it)
The story and campaign was not very fun in my opinion, but multiplayer was really fun. Hope your friends also have this game because remember, no split screen.
War zone es una porquería pero el multijugador es adictivo. Ojalá y los dlc de mapas sean gratuitas si dicen que lo serán compralo aún que en si es juego vale lo que pagas por el
