I know it’s not even close to being time for the beta yet and anything is subject to change, but I feel like pointing out something that people might have missed.
I think we may be getting SMG starts because it appears that there’s an AR pickup on this pic
Another thing I just noticed that might be worth pointing out. Do some of the gaps between ledges look like they’d be a bit hard to reach with just a normal jump?
The ledge on the left side (really narrow and tall) looks like you might not be able to jump high enough to get up to. Could this be a sign that we might have the help of a Spartan Ability to give us a little extra jump boost?
Thanks for reading and this is all just food for thought, nothing concrete.
Good point. I think it’s possible. They may want to test that in the beta to see if people prefer the SMG starts then maybe change once the final release rolls around.
Also, thanks for spotting out the weapons. I actually missed those when watching the trailer.
It is not exactly uncommon to have starting weapons on the map, so I don’t think that automatically means SMG starts.
Based on some things 343 has said about wanting more mid range options, my current hypothesis is this.
The AR and BR will be the two starting weapons depending on map and gametype and the SMG and DMR will be the ‘niche’ variants that you pick up on the map.
At least that is my hope, I want the SMG to be more than a worthless secondary, I want it to be a useful weapon in its own right. Not something I only use “in emergencies.”

I can’t find the DMR on the linked pic, but I did notice two frags lying on the floor on the left.
Also, I have something to add to the list as to things people have missed. The sword has changed a bit. If you pause at a good time during the vidoc’s pans over the Midship centre, you can see the sword (don’t pay attention to the golden glow) is now wider at the base, and shorter.
As for the SMG, I foresee it being a CQC sidearm. Not an emergency weapon as such, but something you switch to in a close corridor while playing on a map with BR/DMR starts.

Wow, nice finding the grenades! I didn’t see those before. Seeing them lying around on the ground instead of in those weird pods is great :3
And having the weapons lying on the map like the DMR is also really great.
I didn’t know that was an AR, good eyes. I thought it was just part of the map design.
Like Neo said, we could have any weapon as a start, and starting weapons can still be one the map. I’m curious as to what the DMR will behave like. That map looks small, and I’m not really happy to see the Dmr return.
If it’s going to be the range gun, then at least have it as starts in BTB and have a legit equivalent like Needle Rifle. I always felt like Br and Carbine gave better map flow. I just don’t want crossmaping behind rocks and high bullet magnetism to be a thing again. It always falls back on map design too…
Dmr and Needle rifle combo worked great as only precision rifles in Reach…

This.
The DMR pretty much broke Ragnarok in Halo 4…

Agreed. The DMR being an on map spawn weapon is great, and that is were it should stay, 2 people on each side with it is fine. But a whole team of people playing Halo like CoD is just terrible, I like this idea better. This way the DMR is able to stay in the game without being game breaking. I also hope that standard weapons like the DMR, AR, BR and other standard arms fire, have no effect on vehicles like they did in Halo 3. I seriously hope 343 brings back creativity and adds specific heavy weapons that act as anti-air and ground vehicle deterrents. They could get really creative with it, maybe even take interactive maps to a whole new level, and on BTB maps add features that release sentinels that fight for your team for a short period. Or missiles that attempt to clear the skies after a while, making it a little harder for Banshee’s, and other air vehicles that 343 might add to the game to dominate a game.

This, and I think the light rifle (unless they replace it, like I hope they will) should be the same.
I kind of want SMG/Magnum starts (assuming the SMG is actually a good CWC weapon and the magnum is scoped) with a few BR’s near the spawn area. That way not everyone has a BR and it forces people to actually use more of the sandbox. Cause you all know once someone get the BR (or another precision weapon) they are never gonna drop it…

Defenseless off spawn.
Unable to teamshoot.
Unable to weaken distanced objective players.
SMG starts would unequivocally be a huge step in the wrong direction, but I don’t see it happening.

Everyone would be defenseless off spawn. Hence making the battle for better weapons greater. As it should be.
Solves itself in the first statement.
With the help of sandbox you can easily get yourself a better gun.
I’d say SMG spawns would work very well. It creates a possibility for people to fight for DMR’s and Battle Rifles.
Of course it shouldn’t be like this in every gamemode though.
There should still be BR Slayer and DMR Slayer. But the SMG in Halo 5 could work as the Assault Rifle worked in Halo Reach.

Everything you listed is what people have been asking from “arena” style gameplay.
and besides, you’re talking about specific gametypes, not thinking about the idea of making it work with different options.
