My question is do we get to pick if we want to be a Red spartan or a Blue spartan for the story or is it going to simply say why they fight each other.
If we can pick either Red or Blue will it have an effect on MP?

I think that there will just be a point where Spartans are fighting eachother. Not necessarily Red vs. Blue though.
I do not think it will impact the multiplayer in a significant way (we may gain armor or something), but the story for sure. For example, we may have Chief make a choice between the two, which may mean that this will be the first Halo where there can be multiple endings/outcomes depending on said choice.
However, more or likely the case is that there may be two groups (UNSC and ONI for example) who have different goals, and thus have their own Spartans to do their bidding, even if that means killing one another to get the job done, and Chief simply has to deal with them if they get in his way.
They said that they’ve came up with a fairly convincing reason why the reds fight the blues but not that it’s related to the campaign in any way.
They did say though that there is a reason why we will be playing as Spartan IV’s.
Just a thought. Maybe they will treat the background story like Assassins Creed’s multiplayer. Some sort of a training simulation.
I just posted in another topic like this, here is a link to that thread:

In there, I listed the posibility of choosing an army, and even went as far as suggesting a seperate ranking system just for that army, along with a system of ribbons and medals.
Frankie pretty much said the exact opposite of what OP is saying, lol.
He said there has always been a clear division between Campaign and Multiplayer. He also said that 343i has come up with a reason for Reds to be fighting Blues. He did not say that it would be part of the main story.
Personally, I don’t really care if there is a reason or not. The only thing I could see coming out of this is maybe it will make Machinimas easier to write and more believable.
I don’t recall hearing or seeing anything that said red vs blue would be part of the main storyline. The main story is Master Chief, and whatever he is doing in Halo 4. They did say that they have a pretty good reason for why reds fight blues, but I don’t believe it was meant to be some huge story plot, I belive it was just something for multiplayer.

How are they going to explain it, if its not in the story?

I belive it is just a multiplayer thing. Perhaps its an easter egg.
Its like the story behind every map. They do have a story, or something that explains some of what is going on there, but that doesn’t mean there was neccesarily any way they were directly connected to the main story of the game.
In the main story we are the Master Chief, Spartan John-117. No red, or blue, just green. At least for the beginning.
If the red vs blue thing is a part of the actual Halo story, I doubt it has any effect in Halo 4’s campaign. Maybe it could be looked at more in depth through books or comics. Unless it has a really big or important story behind it, I don’t think its going to be anyhting major. But, who knows. We just need to wait and find out.
