While many people are arguing about the value of the newly announced ‘Limited Edition’, I’m very concerned about the inclusion of actual gameplay advantages that are awarded to people who pay a little more. The ‘Limited Edition’ package comes with some sort of ‘specialization’ add-on, which will provide early access to people with this edition of the game. Though all players will eventually get these specializations, whatever they are, doesn’t it seem antithetical to what Halo’s multiplayer is?
Every Halo game’s multiplayer has something in common: no matter how many hours you put in, every player is inherently equal. This is the real beauty of Halo, in my opinion, and it’s about to be ruined by the developer/publisher. By awarding gameplay advantages to certain players, the developer detracts from the spirit of the game and certainly makes me less excited. This seems to be confirming our worst fears about the change from Bungie to 343. I’ve been a Halo fan since the first one came out in 2001 and I’m extremely disappointed that the naysayers may very well turn out to be right.
In general I would say no, certain advantages shouldn’t be given to people who pay more money. That being said, I’m not really worried about it. I doubt these advantages will turn out to be huge game changers.
Look, I posted this in good faith to start a discussion about this. This is a legitimate point of concern for the fanbase. I don’t appreciate this useless commentary. Please contribute something constructive, or stay quiet.
Edit: This was in response to #3, if that’s not clear.
I don’t think specializations are in game advantages. I think they are separate from modifications/perks. Specializations seam more similar to commendations. For example you choose CQB then get extra xp for performing actions within your choosen specialization.

I know what you mean. I’ve been worried about a lot of the stuff 343’s been announcing so far because it’s all so drastically different from how I would’ve gone about making one of the most pivotal games in the franchise’s history, but who knows? Maybe it’ll work out.

Very interesting idea. I could totally get behind this.
I’m more concerned about the fact, that we will be getting early access to new ranks. This means that there can’t be something like a trueskill based system. It’s like CoD getting early access to prestige modes, but I could be totally wrong.
I just hope, that there will be still a really good trueskill system. I don’t want to be matched with noobs and I don’t want to get destroyed by MLG Pro’s when I enter the MLG Playlist. Simply give me people which are equal in skill to me, that can’t be hard.
I’m not too worried, as I believe 343i stated that there would be no gameplay modifications that directly affect your strength, only passive enhancements (more ammo, grenades, etc.) I’m not 100% sure on this, but if this happens to be the case, then I wouldn’t mind it.
What makes you think this “specialization” is going to effect the MP’s balance?
It could be similar to Reach.
And this specialization may do nothing more than effect your appearance.
I’ve heard rumors of weapon and armor skins.
Maybe it’s for that?
No worries. Bungie will bail us out with a new and better franchise. I don’t understand how 343 can have the balls to give specializations to certain people. So others won’t have the perks that don’t get the specializations. They should inbox the code to everyone. What kind of bs is that?
