Having played this game on both Previous Generation and Current Generation consoles, I can confirm that playing on an Xbox One does not help the issue.
On the Series X the issue sometimes comes up on occasion. And I have noticed something.
When I experience desync on my Series X, it is only applied to specific players in the match. I.E., if I experience desync issues when attempting to shoot at or punch an enemy Spartan and my hits don’t register correctly with that player, it will be like that for every encounter for the rest of the match when I am attempting to target said player. However if my hits are registering correctly on his teammates, then I have pretty much no issue when entering fights with them as all my shots register and the lag-ghost teleporting is non-existent.
However when I played on my Xbox One, the result is the opposite.
I have a horrible time when trying to engage in fights as it feels as if I am playing with five-hundred ping, despite me seeing an on-average ping of 80-120 ping range most of the time on Xbox One.
Given the fact that the majority of players do not have an Xbox Series X yet (thanks to scalpers that need to be fined and/or incarcerated as the con-artists they are), it stands to reason that most console players are on the Xbox One platforms.
Thus the problems we face with desync is likely due to the fact that many of the random players we encounter online are playing a Next-Gen game with Previous-Gen outdated hardware. Had scalpers not been such a burden this time around (thanks to Covid making everyone’s wallets a bit more tighter), it is likely that Halo Infinite would be a Series S/X and PC title. I surmise that the only reason the Xbox One lineup of consoles were allowed to play Halo Infinite was likely due to the scalpers forcing 343’s hand into porting the game to the out-of-date consoles. Thus we essentially have Potatoes running a game that requires more modern specs.

“We designed this game to work optimally for the hardware minimum requirements of the Xbox Series S. Microsoft, when can we see a projected release window?”
Microsoft -
“. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . so here’s the dealio . . . . . . . . we are making amazing sales of our new consoles . . . . . . . . . . . .”
343 -
“. . . . . . . . . . . . . . why are you making this sound like bad news?”
Microsoft -
“. . . . . . scalpers are 80% of our console sales . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . which means 80% of our Series X and Series S consoles are in the hand of . . . . . . . . like . . . . . thirty balding guys with weight issues and no social tact but think of themselves as salesmen . . . . . . . . . . .”
343 -
“. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . so we are going to have to delay again?”
Microsoft -
“And that is where the bad news comes in. NO, we cannot delay any more than we already have. Otherwise we will owe a lot more money than you already do to the investors that signed contracts to be your budget benefactors . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . so we are going to have to ask you to port the game to the last generation of consoles so that we still get a lot of players that will play the game.”

“. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . WHAT?!! Are you crazy!!? The game will be buggy as all hell because you would have outdated hardware trying to run state-of-the-art software!! It would be like trying to run Crysis with max settings on a Macbook!!! IT . . . IS . . . GOING . . . TO . . . CHUG !!”
Microsoft -
“Hey I don’t like it either. BUT we gotta pay off our investors. We are already delayed behind schedule and that means we have to pay them ~25% more interest on what we already promised them. We cannot delay again and if you want to keep your jobs, you will have to take this option. It is the only way to ensure that you don’t file for bankruptcy and that we don’t have to close your doors permanently.”
343 -
“But our reputation would be tarnished!”
Microsoft -
“Oh come off it, your reputation was tarnished when you released Halo 4 and Halo 5. Those two were designed to be failures. Halo Infinite will be a good thing in time. After about a year or two of being released, we can announce that servers for the Xbox One version of the game will be shutting down. By then, the players will have moved on to the Series S/X and the issues would no longer exist. In the long run that will improve your reputation as you will update the game and satiate the fans. It isn’t the ideal option, but it is the best option for the time being.”
Basically a mock conversation of how it probably went in a board room somewhere in Washington or California.
