There Should Be A Full On Spiritual Successor To Halo

A new game that has the single player and multiplayer of old Halo. With it being faster paced of course.

I wrote a lot down below but the simple thing I want to post is: What are other games out there that are like Halo? I don’t like Destiny because it’s focused so much on MMO / RPG weapon stats. Splitgate has no vehicles or physics objects. Any game I could name is pretty much an entirely different kind of game altogether that doesn’t have the elements I like about Halo’s multiplayer

Multiplayer-wise there’s four Bungie games and four 343i games that could be copied. Where do we begin that conversation?

Bungie spent a long time making Destiny and Destiny 2, but the story in those games is weak and the game leans heavily on stats and levels so I don’t want to dip my toes in. It’s sort of like how I would love Escape from Tarkov if it lost all Rouge-like elements. Rainbow Six Siege could have gone a different direction and allowed players to make their own maps or gametypes instead of constantly adding new gadgets and restricting how the game is played so that only modders who pirate the game have freedom.

I’m saying it’s complicated. If we’re going to have a conversation about we ought to be specific about the specifics.
For example, the physics in Halo 3 are really great and make up an undercurrent of the gameplay that give spice to even the mundane parts. Grenades are movement and physics tools in every function they have, while explosive “fusion coils” start in useful places but still can be pushed around the map and aren’t locked up in one spot. There’s a whole weapon, the gravity hammer, meant specifically for giving hard pushes on any physics objects players can get close to. That’s rare to see in games. The Source Engine (first used in Half-Life 2) provides great contrast with how it uses physics.

Maybe the Halo community should make a non profit Halo game and distribute it freely so we actually have a good Halo game to play again. Haven’t had anything good out of 343 so maybe we should just take it into our own hands since we know better.

The community is quite active in trying to make their own games. Like @FatherThor mentions, there are a few fan made games/mods that have been in development for years now. You’ll find that these unfortunately have very small niche communities.

  • There was a resurrection of an abandoned game we can’t talk too much about which pretty much merged with MCC’s version of Halo 3
  • installation01.org is a high profile fan game trying to recreate the community of Halo 3 multiplayer on PC. Although they do seem to be in some sort of development hell. They do regular dev blogs and are pretty cool, check them out.
  • Project Contingency is very similar to Installation 01. Apparently they released their first public version last year? Looks like it got overshadow by Infinite releasing.
  • A more recent announced fan-game, Branching Sickness is the flood focused campaign that everyone has wanted for the last 2 decades. Seems to be moving along quickly, find @SicknessGame on twitter, it looks stunning.

Plus the MCC modding community is quietly taking off. Check out r/HaloMods on reddit, or RejectedShotgun on YouTube to get a highlight of what’s happening with that. Fairly certain there is a Halo CE remake in Halo 3 going on, + a custom Halo 3 flood campaign featuring an infected scarab boss battle.

Honourable mentions for a couple of indie games on PC have tried to ‘succeed’ Halo:

  • Splitgate was a brilliant, albeit poorly balanced, Halo / Portal crossover which was huge for a month at the end of last year.
  • Years ago a PC game called Toxikk released, it was closer to Unreal Tournament than Halo but it had a very obvious Halo inspired Big Team mode. Unfortunately they forgot to advertise it and it never got an audience.

I think it would be possible to create a Halo multiplayer game in Unreal Engine 5 at a low cost.

A multiplayer with 15-20 good maps and then make a single player game over 2-3 years.

I have an idea of how I would set it up better than the 343 model.

The community would also be able to make forge maps in UE5.

Splitgate’s greatly balanced.
