Theory: The battle at Zeta Halo

In the E3 Discover Hope we see a Halo Ring that is severely damaged, it is believed that this is Zeta halo. I have a theory as to what happened:

  • The UNSC discover that Zeta Halo can perform a tactical pulse (kill a system without killing a large portion of the galaxy); meaning if the created found out and sieze the ring, it would end the war. The UNSC already have plans to take cortana with the AI chip seen in the trailer but the ring takes precedence. - The Infinity arrives at the ring to discover Cortana’s guardian and puts both plans into action. The assault on the guardian goes well but the is a different story. Unable to take the ring, either the Infinity detonates its engine or a havoc nuke is set off. Causing a supernova style explosion that severely damages the ring and guardian. Knocking Chief adrift in space, the guardian moving onto the ring. This would explain the damage to the ring and shaking seen at the beginning of the trailer. Thoughts?

The Created’s goal is to preserve all life in the galaxy by using the guardians to police systems, using a ring is completely unnecessary when you can use a guardian or two to disable everything in a system, I believe the opposite happened. I believe that the Banished took the ring to gain the ability to wipe out the life that Cortana wants to protect but not go through with lighting it so they can gain some sort of leverage against her in their quest for freedom. The Banished want freedom above all else, that’s why they defied the Covenant and that’s why they’d defy the Created. Maybe the humans wanted to do the same thing but because of Atriox is presumed dead (potentially killed by humans) by his lieutenant, they ended up fighting for control of the ring and when Cortana showed up she decided to get rid of two birds with one stone by blowing off a segment of the ring with a guardian so no one could foil her plans.

Interesting idea, I like the idea of the Infinity suffering a defeat and crashing on Zeta Halo or being destroyed it would be reminiscent to the Pillar of Autumn in the original as well as a good way to focus on a smaller cast of characters and develop them better than in H5.

Can I ask for a summary from someone who knows the extended universe of where they are and how they got there?

Is the anticipation just that there’s a time gap between 5 and Infinite and we’re joining in right in the middle/ aftermath at a battle at Zeta Halo?

Not a bad theory but the UNSC discovered Installation 07 (Zeta Halo) back in 2553 (shortly after Halo 3) and commenced extensive research 2 years later. Halo Infinite takes place in 2561. Activating the Installation would sort of go against Cortana’s agenda of preserving life. The UNSC, Banished and Created don’t really have a reason to be there from what we presently know about Installation 07. I always thoerized that something happens in that book that infuriates the Banished leading to them going on the offensive and try use it against humanity. I hope Shadows of Reach clarifies things a little bit because the mysteries is killing me :cold_sweat:

Having the Infinity blow itself up to take out the ring would be a great homage to Halo Combat Evolved and would make humanity weak again. I would be all for it. It would bring back the sense of a losing war and the desperation found in the older Halo games.

I don’t want Infinity blowing up honestly. They’re one of humanity’s last hopes. Plus too many valuable characters are presently aboard it (except Sarah Palmer, if it blows up, take her with it PLEASE).

Removing the Infinity would give the feeling that humanity is actually losing and struggling to survive. Something the new games have been missing.

In Halo 4, the Infinity was disabled by merely entering Requiem. If John didn’t intervene, it would have been overwhelmed and lost.
In the next mission, the Infinity had to wait for ground forces to disable some anti-ship weapons, which effectively makes the mission no different from something we would have seen in Halo 3. Completely dependant on ground forces, no ship support. The Infinity only appeared at the end of the mission JUST to destroy a large structure. After that mission, it just leaves Requiem.
Actually, let’s look at the Covenant (mission) in Halo 3. We had a CAS-class Assault Carrier on our side, as the only space-ship in the Ark. Did it make any difference in our battles? No. It just stood there, blasting Plasma Torpedos against shields… for the sake of it. Because it was clear those shields weren’t even flinching from it’s attacks. In comparison, the Infinity was doing nothing in Requiem, making it no different to the Shadow of Intent in these contexts.
Anyway, after that single mission, Reclaimer, the Infinity leaves the planet.

The next time we hear of the Infinity, was in Midnight, when fighting the Mantle’s Approach. From the battle chatter, we can tell that:

  • The Infinity was the ONLY Human ship capable of harming the Mantle’s Approach. Not even ODPs could scratch it; - The Infinity had to rely on a fighter that was already under the Mantle’s nose in order to be able to get a straight shot into it. Even then, its supposed “strongest weapons in the Human arsenal” barely made a scratch that was easily and quickly fixed just seconds after impact; - The Infinity would ultimately fail to protect the Earth, since the Mantle fired the Composer at Earth while still fighting the Infinity. The Human ship can only watch as the population it swore to protect was being digitized. The Mantle was defeated from an explosion that came from inside. In Halo 5, it did nothing for 95% of the game. Not even in the last mission. In the ending cutscene, all it did was run away. From that scene, as well as paying attention to in-game dialogue and details, we can tell that:
  • A single Guardian emerged from slipspace, and quickly fired an EMP pulse that disabled every electronic on and near Earth. If the Infinity tried to fight, it would have been disabled, because it’d still need to warm it’s weapons up before firing; - From that single example, we saw that a single Guardian is enough to render the Infinity useless. And we saw dozens of them in the end of Halo 5; - We were told that a single Guardian can police a Solar system.343i introduced an “anti-Infinity” plot device in Halo 5 that everyone seemingly ignores just so they see the Infinity burst down in flames. I’d say that the notion that the Infinity automatically makes the UNSC “invincible” merely comes from it’s size. Yet, despite what it’s capable of, not just in terms of armament, but troops and equipment, barely made a difference in the end. Actually, I think that changing the ship’s class to something like a Halberd would have made no difference, except with the battle against Mantle’s Approach, of course.
And there’s more: Humanity is already losing and struggling to survive. The UNSC (or what remains of it) just lost Earth, the very planet that we worked so hard to protect in Halo 2 and 3, was instantly subjugated, and lost to Created forces. Hundreds of Smart AIs joined Cortana. By 2561, I’d be surprised if we still had a planet under our control, because I was lead to believe that every Human planet was subjugated by Cortana. That’s a massive dent in military force and resources.

Very good theory if it goes like this I will be both impressed and happy
