I’m an insane fan of the Precursors, and have dug them since they’ve been introduced. The Precursors are the most powerful species in the Halo Universe. Their history is over 100 billion years old (predating the Universe), they’ve created the most powerful technology in the Universe (including the Domain which precedes the Universe), and they created life across the cosmos. In the Forerunner Saga, we meet the Primordial (the most powerful character in Halo) a Precursor who survived his people being killed by the Forerunners. As his body is destroyed by the IsoDidact in Primordium, we learned in Mythos that the Primordial took over the Gravemind. So the Gravemind since then has been the Primordial, seeking revenge for his species. In Silentium, Forthencho speaks with the Librarian about them, saying they are able to take on any form, dying away and being reborn again in different bodies. I believe that the Precursors’ physical forms are just vessels for them to inhabit. They are not bound to the physical universe like their created species. I believe when they turned their biological forms to dust, they were going to inhabit their original bodies (as said in the novels). Instead of their original forms to inhabit, a new species sprung from too much time of waiting. Remember, the Flood is a new species that sprung from the Precursors’ DNA, the Flood is not Precursors. One thing that does conflict with this argument is what the Primordial says to the Ur-Didact. He says at the end of Cryptum, “We meet again, young one. I am the last of those who gave you breath and shape and form, millions of years ago. I am the last of those your kind rose up against and ruthlessly destroyed. I am the last Precursor. And our answer is at hand.” Yeah, this kind of goes against my theory. If their bodies are just avatars, why would the Primordial says he’s the last of his people and be so bent on revenge? He would know they would inhabit bodies later on. I think he was the last Precursor in the Milky Way to inhabit a body. The argument can be is that he was lying to the Didact, as he’s the master manipulator. Yes, there’s other arguments against my theory, but I think this idea would be really cool for them. They are the gods of the Halo Universe, and this would make sense for them.
I think I followed your train of thought. If so, it is a pretty close match to my view of the Precursors.
They exist incorporeally, outside of space and time as constants, and the physical forms they took were avatars used to interact with the rest of their creations. I think these avatars are a bit like videogame characters, in that when you aren’t controlling them, they exhibit their own personalities and act on their own (like Sonic, if you leave the game too long, he starts yawning, and eventually just jumps out of the level), but they still serve as your puppets when you need them to.

I their physical forms like vessels form them that they themselves inhabit. Not the idea of their forms being like game characters with their own personalities. I like to think that they became transcendent, no bound by the physical plane, able to make any form they choose.
You’ve brought this theory up before here with other threads on this on this site. I agreed with you both on them and still do but you’ve mentioned it before. I can link them for you if you want.
Wait…what?
Flood aren’t Precursors? No…thats not right. I’ve read they are.
Do correct/educate me if I’m wrong.

In Mythos, it seems to indicate that the Flood came from defect Precursor DNA, not actually Precursors themselves. And it says after the Primordial took over the Gravemind, he would now us the parasite to seek revenge for his people.

So what happened to the Flood “dust” that supposedly turned some into Flood? How did the DNA become defected?

Time made the Precursor DNA defect. Instead of the original forms coming back, a parasite came into being.

That’s right haha. Part of me wants a more realistic reason instead of time.

It doe make somewhat realistic sense. Time would defect some DNA as well as mixing it with the Pheru.

Time is perfect explanation. In real life, Time decays and ultimately destroys everything. Everything will fall in time eventually. The same applies to the Halo universe. The only known exception in Halo is Precursor technology which is immune to the decay of time and all other known forces bar a Halo pulse which is a neural physical weapon.
Brian and TRUe, you have good points.
Wait, where is it said that the Precursors predate the universe itself?

When Forthencho speaks with the Librarian, he says how the Precursors come before even the stars themselves. Could mean anything, but I took it that they existed in a prior universe or dimension.

It most likely means they came from a previous universe or another dimension or from the Bulk or another realm (perhaps the Glow). If they didn’t originate from before the universe then they would have to first come into existence between the Big Bang and the formation of the earliest stars which is quite some time (400 millions years or so). Still their ability to take incorporeal form and the extent of knowledge they have stored in the Domain implies they’re older than time itself or at least our concept of time.

I wonder when they created the Domain. I wouldn’t be shocked if they originate from the Glow.

500 million years ago according to Catalog viewing memories of the Precursors from Gravemind. Several billion years ago according to Forthencho being told of the Precursors’ knowledge and power by Gravemind. Although Forthencho may have been referring to the knowledge stored within.

So, they created the Domain itself 500 million years ago, but the knowledge stored in it dates back to 100 billion years ago?

Yeah that appears to be the case.
From my own memory of Silentium and Halopedia itself
The Domain was created by the Precursors over 500 million years before the end of the Forerunner civilization,[25] as a library of experience and cultural exchange totaling to a hundred billion years’ worth of knowledge.[24] It was stored within the Milky Way galaxy, sheltered by the Precursors’ neural physics-based architecture. The accessible aspect of the Domain was an immense field generated by this reserve.[24]Yeah that’s how I remembered it.

I wonder if all th info is truly gone forever.
