Theory on Weapon's name, it's not Cortana

So Bungie and 343 after them have always had a habit of hiding things in plain sight or at least making you think about things. To me, Weapon taking the name “Cortana” is too obvious and when you think about it, it doesn’t fit.

We find out in the name cutscene that Echo-216 is Fernando Esparza. He asks Weapon what he should call her.

Weapon asks Chief if it would be ok. Like most people, I figured she was asking Chief if he was ok with her picking Cortana as a name. However, Weapon’s too thoughtful and wouldn’t go with Cortana since Weapon knows what Cortana represents to Chief. It would stir up too much past every time he had to call her that. Remember, he tried to delete her because he thought she was going to turn into another Cortana. The story then takes you through showing that she isn’t Cortana, even though she’s a copy, she’s her own AI. Her own personality.

However, Chief’s next line is “You get to choose your name”… so she may have actually been asking if it’s ok for her to name herself and, with the name I think she picked, she’s asking if it’s ok because someone else is sort of using it at the time. Again, making it easy to think she could be asking if it’s ok to go with “Cortana”.

Now, think back to all the times you encounter Cortana in the game, or what’s left of her. Weapon keeps telling you they’re echoes of Cortana. Fast forward to where she finds out she’s a copy or in a way, an echo of Cortana, herself.

One of the definitions of an Echo is: “A close parallel or repetition of an idea, feeling, style, or event.” also “(of an object, movement, or event) be reminiscent of or have shared characteristics with.”

Therefore, out of respect for Chief and Cortana, and the fact that she is her own AI different from Cortana, even though she’s a copy, she’s an “Echo”.

Thus, the perfect name for her is… Echo.

One of the Devs in the Christmas Livestream was discussing the campaign and they referred to the Weapon as Cortana before correcting themselves.

Could just be a slip up and not mean anything. But, if they think of the character as Cortana and find it easy to not make that distinction would there even be much sense her taking on another name?

It’s what Cortana called herself when she was a few minutes old, it probably really is the name she’s meant to pick.

It is a nice idea for a name mind.

its probably just going to be cortana cause devs lack any creativity or passion for this franchise.

Yeah I thought Cortana at first but because they didn’t say it, it was like a cliff hanger.

Wasn’t there another pelican pilot lady in halo CE named “echo 419”? (I seriously remembered this from memory :skull_and_crossbones: )

Maybe the weapon name’s herself after her and not Fernando :joy:

Yes! There is an Echo-419 Pelican pilot in CE.

It would be kinda funny if she named herself after her instead of Fernando lol

Wouldn’t it be funny if we get the next dlc or campaign and chief calls her “Escharum”?

I’d be like, “I knew it!” :scream:

Ya’ll understand “echo” is just the nato alphabet for the letter e? The same applies to why chief says Sierra 1-1-7…it’s the nato alphabet for the letter “s”.

Why tf would she name herself echo.

???

I understand Echo is used in the nato phonetic but the word Echo also has another meaning. I put the definition in my post.

There’s a third definition of Echo and it’s when you make a sound and it bounces back or reflects back to you and you hear the sound again.

I just saw this on reddit (I looked up what we’re talking about…)

“Are you sure? It’s okay?”

The Chief nods.

The Weapon smiles. “I have the perfect name. Craig.”

The air is sucked out of the room. The Pilot squints in confusion.

Echo is a good name. To add to it, the term “dust and echoes” was thrown around a lot in the campaign so they’d probably throw back to it as much as they like to do with “finish the fight”.

Also it seems very dubious that she would want to pick and keep the name of an AI who, in recent memory, was the AI Overlord/Destroyer of Worlds to most of the known galaxy.

Just as an aside. I am not sure they’ve really established she has a distinct personality.

If anything the emphasis is on just how much she’s like Cortana. Having the same mannerisms, catch phrases and this is a recurring motif. “You’re her if we hadn’t met”. To the point where Cortana can predict what the Weapon will say in a given situation.

Plus this is all part of Cortanas plan so that he can be set up with the perfect version of herself. So that they can go back to being a team again.

The differences such as the arguments with Chief arise because of how he reacts to her in brushing her off and trying to delete her. Not really due to differences in her personality.

Yeah that’s almost as good as the name “regret” :joy:

People can say the story was lack luster, but I like that we finally got to see what Cortana was saying that they’d replace her with another Cortana model.

I also thought it was cool halo 4 started with the ending of halo 3.

I think I’ve heard infinite starts off where 5 ended but I honestly am still confused what happened during halo 5…

Edit: also I didn’t play halo wars 2

Totally dig this theory!

It’s obvious that she’s just Cortana moving forward. Infinite’s story is just a fancy retcon of halo 4 and 5. And that’s a very good thing.

All the more reason for her name to be “Echo” if Infinite wants to be an echo of the previous games

Again, I think using the name Cortana when most of the known galaxy knows it as being a name associated with a God-complexed AI is far from a wise decision.

Yeah but so is having her face…you might as well have the name as well. People are going to remark on it.

Like I am surprised only the Pilot picks up on this. Despondent Pyre, Escharum and any of the marines don’t offer any remark on this.

Based on absolutely nothing…

Her name’s gonna be Courtney.

Considering that Weapon is really only piggybacking along with Master Chief and 80% of the time its going to be him that sees her face with Echo-216 being the exception as he’s being dragged along with the ride with them, I think saying the name “Cortana” on a comms channel is going to raise a lot more brows and questions than a few Marines that just happen to be at Chief’s side and manage to sneak a peak at the Weapon’s face.

Constantly referring to a new AI with a name like “Echo” and then seeing her face is much more easy to manage and explain without causing some kind of panicky reaction than it is to constantly say the name “Cortana” on a radio and then trying to explain to everyone that its not Cortana when you keep calling her Cortana and she looks like Cortana.

I kinda thought that her tone was implying that she was just going to keep the name “Weapon”…

'I think I have the perfect one."

Maybe I need to re-watch it though
