Theory: Guardians (Some escalation spoilers)

Hey guys, this is my first post but I have been reading threds here for a while.

Someone in the Halo escalation disccussion thread mentioned the Didact’s line “We are Forerunners, Guardians of all that exists” from Halo 4’s epilogue. Now we know the Librarian wants to help humanity and we also kknow that 4 Spartan-IIs are o match for the Didact. So something else would be needed to defeat him. This si where my theory comes in.

We know Thorne trusts Halsey so it is plausible that he would defect fro the UNSC to help her if she convinced him. Obviously Blue team would do the same. With the two pieces of the Janus key reunited, they could find these ancient relics left behind by the Forerunners. What if the relics the Librarian sent them to find were actually other Forerunners, “Guardians”. We know that many Forerunners thought the Didact went mad (hence his containment on Requiem) so they would be inclined to help the Librarian stop him once again. One of these Guardians could be that War Sphynx looking machine we see in the E3 trailer.

With so many Spartans defecting to help Halsey (who we last see agreeing to help Mdama) the ONI would send someone out to investigate. Enter Jameson Locke! The first person he’d seek help from would be humanity’s main Sangheili ally: the arbiter (Halo 2 Anniversary trailer).

what are your thoughts?

Idk; I originally thought that Guardians would refer to chief, locke, blue team, the new spartan 4’s, arbiter and his gang, etc. who would all team up to kick some butt.

However, after reading the last few escalation issues (no spoilers), it looks like chief and co. may need some forerunner help after all…

I thought that too about Chief and the gang being the Guardians, but that seems to obvious.

I believe the Guardians that the title might refer to are the ones who have shown themselves to be worthy of the Mantle.

All throughout current Halo Media we have seen specific characters who follow the Mantle fairly accurately, even if they don’t know it. There are very few truly bad characters in post-Bungie Halo. They all have their justifiable reasons to do what they do. Jul 'Mdama fights because of his wife being murdered at the hands of the humans. Ur-Didact fights because his already troubled self got corrupted by the Gravemind. Now he believes he can stop a Flood invasion without using the ring and sticking as close to the Mantle as possible. That is what is most important to him. All Osman and ONI want to do is prevent the Human race from being destroyed. Are any of these things bad, even if the lengths they go to preserve them are? Something something greater good, something something gray.

However many grey characters there are, there are always the white knights of the Haloverse.

On the human side we have characters like Lord Hood. His battle stays on the battlefield. He has constantly been shown to work towards peace and coexistence between all the races in the galaxy.

Then we have John. He fights alongside the Arbiter and even the Flood in order to save lives. I firmly believe that even after everything, if the Ur-Didact wanted to team up with John, he would say yes.

If John is a Guardian then so is Thorne. Thorne is regarded as one of the most Spartan of the SPARTAN-IV. It would be a cool moment to see John and Thorne fight together with Blue Team.

For Sanghelli we obviously have to mention Thel 'Vadam. After the war he has been on a non-stop crusade to bring peace between Humans and Sanghelli. Even Sanghelli and Brutes. He is like a mix of Hood and John.

As for Forerunners, you have Chant-To-Green, the new Librarian. You also have the IsoDidact. Both these characters show great compassion, another requirement for the Mantle.

I believe that if these characters, or Guardians, lead the joint forces of the old Covenant species, humans, and whatever Forerunners are left, against a full Flood onslaught that has been hinted at, then the Galaxy may truly be saved. The Mantle doesn’t belong to any one species, it is supposed to be shared. After all the Precursors (original holders of the Mantle) have been hinted at to be multi-species.

Honorable mentions go to Rtas 'Vadum. I believe he has too much Prejudice against Humans from the war to be truly a Guardian. We’ve only seen Blue Team in combat situations, so it is hard to gauge if they’re capable of Guardian status. We don’t know enough about Locke or Lydus, so they’re out too.
