What are your ideas. Personally, I believe he was discharged and stole his armor back, explaining the crack on his visor. Maybe he is looking for a way to get Cortana back?

I think he run out of shields, his Mjolnir is half broken and he needs to protect it from dust and sand.

I think he was involved in a housing scandal building mini-palaces in Iraq while the U.S. made it illegal to do business with them. He’s hiding from some “light treason” charges. His second oldest son is the only thing keeping the family together…

All jokes aside, There are some many routes 343 can take in the story line. Maybe he found out that the Didact made it to another planet?

I think that with the cracked visor and with grip of Cortana’s chip after staring at the forerunner machine, he is desperate, he has been fighting some very character defining enemy’s that have tested in every way forcing to do anything just to avoid another encounter and that the forerunner machine has caused him to look at Cortana’s chip to remind what he’s came for and to carry on.
Maybe he found where the Didact is hiding, and sees the chip as an inspiration to carry on?
As some one said before , he is hiding from visual recognition? If it is Humanity then any tracking devices in his armor are damaged or removed. If it is the Covenant then it is highly probable that the (station , planet) is causing interference with their tracking tech. Obviously not hiding from Forerunners with the cloak ,(unless as my Brother theorized it is some super tech cloak that is protecting him from elements and tracking of any kind).
I tend to think he has gone rogue and is searching for Cortana on his own. The way most of the brass he came into contact with reacted to Cortanas’ rampancy it would not surprise me if John walked away. Knowing how unhappy he was with how they are treated for what they have sacrificed.
“Most of me will be left down there” , If she meant on Requiem then the Didact would not have left such a strategic advantage behind. I think the “War Sphinx” is Cortana (just twisted by another millenniums old mad man) or has knowledge of her whereabouts , that is why Chief grips the chip before …whatever onslaught is to come.
