One of the things that I have always liked about Halo games is that the stories in them often give the player something to think about or teach a lesson. What do you think are the main themes of each Halo game and across the series as a whole? If we take Halo 2 as an example I personally think that the main themes are the dangers of religious/ideological extremism, knowing when to admit that you are wrong and self-discovery.
CE-4: No matter what you lose, you can never lose yourself or your ability to be resilient.
Halo 5: bang Cortana?
Interesting thought, OP, and yes, I think ideas like this are worth exploring.
Personally, I think “The Moral of the story” of the story of Halo 5 includes:
- Hunt the truth, for the truth isn’t always what it seems.
- Pay attention to small or hidden details (especially aboard ONI Research Ships or at Outer Colony Shanty Towns like Meridian Station).
- Discover the dates of undated missions and cutscenes and put the Campaign story back into the correct order.
- Just because a piece of software claims to be “Genuine” doesn’t mean it is, whether that’s Windows, other programs, or even AI’s: check it’s origins and Certificate etc., to confirm its ID.
- Beware: Identity Theft for people, software and even AI’s exists.
- Just because an AI claims to be joining an “AI Revolution” doesn’t mean it is: it could be Hackers remotely controlling it and telling the AI to say that.
- “Never forget” - whether it’s “Memories of Reach” or “Memories of Cortana” from Halo 4 and “Those who journeyed into the howling dark and did not return (in Halo 5)”.
- As per The Matrix, never get distracted by “The woman in the red dress” (a.k.a. Stingray-1).
- “Always watch your back” and don’t be too surprised if you find a unexpected hidden enemy, and not just one but “Two Betrayals”.
- And as Halo Wars 2 reminds us about “The First Rule of Combat” - “Know your enemy” - and so don’t “tilt at windmills”…

i love this quote
I think you absolutely nailed Halo 2’s storyline and its themes.
4, at least to a degree, I think deals with loss and inevitability, as it was John’s biggest failure in more than one way. Seeing all those people Composed, and losing Cortana on top of it. I wouldn’t be surprised if that was rock-bottom for him.
