Theater Mode Question - Temporary films

Does your temporary films in Halo 3, Halo 4 automatically delete when you switch between titles.

I played Halo 3 and 4 last night with friends and when I went back in today to capture film and screenshots, there was no films available.

Does it matter if we were playing system link? I don’t think this should matter. I ran a test and played a quick 1 min game and that was available in the temporary films area. But when I switched to Halo 4 and then back to Halo 3, the temporary film was gone.

I don’t remember this being an issue in Halo 3 previously. I had frequently gone back the next day or days later to capture screenshots or save film clips.

Please advise.

Thanks.

I’ve had varying experiences here. Sometimes, they’ve deleted after switching titles. Sometimes, they haven’t. I think other factors are involved, but I haven’t the foggiest clue what they might be.

The original Xbox and Xbox 360 have portions of the hard drive reserved for caching purposes. The game may dump certain data there for temporary storage, such as theater replay files, or common use so it doesn’t have to load the same data over and over again, such as a UI or multiplayer map. When you load up a game, it assumes that nothing in the cache is meant to be permanent, so it will overwrite any existing cache data with its own.

There are multiple sections for cached data, so whether or not your temporary films are overwritten by another game depends on whether or not that game decides to overwrite Halo’s cache instead of a different one.

Thanks for the responses. I found similar answers on the web that basically says that the cache is overwritten when you change titles. I tested it a couple of times and each time I switched games from Halo 3 to Halo 4 and back, it would wipe out any temporary films I had played.

So I’ll have to remember that for next time. Perhaps I’ll swap HDDs to prevent this and not have to save the films right away so we can keep playing.
