The whole story

Hi, I’m brand -Yoink- new to halo insider and I wanted to make a post that could help me clear things up. So basically, I want to better understand the halo lore in its entirety (EVERYTHING THERE IS TO KNOW), the only games I have played are Halo CE, Halo 2, Halo 3, Halo 3 ODST, Halo Reach, and Halo 4 (basically what’s on the mcc). I haven’t played any halo wars games and probably never will(I absolutely HATE strategy games). And I haven’t read any books. What am I missing? What should I do? I’m thinking about watching playthroughs of the halo wars games as to take care of whatever I might be missing there, but with the books, there are so damn many I have no idea where to start, much less where to go after finishing one. And aside from that is there any other stuff I’m missing (shows/movies that are relevant to the lore)? I just need some help cus I’m honestly worried I might never understand it all. Just someone tell me where to start and where to finish.

Halopedia is my go-to for references and anything else. You will be able to find all you need to know there.

I’m not an expert, but I’m currently doing chronological order of the games, movies, and a few books and comics.

There are 4 visual projects, The Fall of Reach, Forward Unto Dawn, Nightfall, and Legends. Forward Unto Dawn and Legends are generally well regarded and Fall of Reach tells the origin story of John 117 and the other Spartan II’s.

I have only read the first 2 books of the Forerunner trilogy, but they are decent if a little controversial for the lore they introduce. I hear that Eric Nylund’s books are great, including The Fall of Reach.

I have digital copies of all the comics, but I haven’t looked into them on any level yet, so I can’t comment on that topic yet.

Edit: There are also two fan films on YouTube: Dawn Under Heaven, and The Fallen. I haven’t watched either, but as I understand it, both can be slotted into the lore some time shortly after Halo CE, although obviously it would not be canon.

If you want the whole story in its entirety, then you’ll have to go the long way and read all the books and other EU material. If you want a short cut, then pick up a copy of Halo Mythos. It gives a summary of all the events of the Halo Universe from the time of the Precursors up until the start of HW2.

How do you feel about arcadey style games? If you’re not into RTS games, you should play the Spartan Series on PC. Definitely watch the cut scenes for the Halo Wars games though. I would recommend playing Halo 5 before watching the HW2 cutscenes, however.

Watch all the cutscenes from the titles you haven’t played. There’s several of channels on YouTube dedicated to the lore of Halo, I’d suggest that. Or just read the books and/or comics.

I understand why you will not play Halo Wars games but Wars 2 is essential to understanding Halo Infinite( Banished, Atriox, Brutes) Halo Wars Defenitive edition is not essential in my point of view. You do need to play Wars 2

I also despised strategy games, but I was pleasantly surprised with the Halo wars series. You may enjoy them more than you think. I ended up enjoying them a lot and I am hoping that one day we will see HW3.

There are a lot of youtubers who do lore videos that you might find entertaining. Halo canon and hiddenxperia come to mind

The only thing that is wrong with that is that anyone can edit it. Not a completely trustworthy site
Check out Waypoint references first before using Halopedia.

True, anyone can edit it, but I trust it. The site tells you exactly where the information came from and what page (if anything is mentioned/happened in a book), so if you have any doubts you can fact check yourself.

Still, check if it’s on Halo Waypoint first.

Both are good places to reference. Waypoint being information delivered directly from 343, and Halopedia being crowdsourced by the fans. I’d actually give Halopedia high marks on accuracy because of the crowdsourcing aspect. If you have one rogue -yoink- spouting nonsense, you’ll have a dozen or so other people correcting the information almost immediately.

If I were to read the books and comics, what books (how many) and in what order that I won’t be totally lost

Halo Mythos probably the best book to pick up. Great artwork too.
