The more I play this game, the more I hate it. The first batch of changes, where the more ludicrously luck-based challenges were removed, still hasn’t resolved the fundamental problems with the system–that it dictates how I play the game. Not just game modes, but on a fundamental level in the matches.

Win/play X ranked games
I hate ranked, me joining ranked is about to ruin the experience of my teammates. I don’t think I won a single one of my ranked placement matches. Yet I’m compelled to play for a dumb cosmetic. The MCC tested this with the Avalanche Sniper Rifle skin, and it was met with near total negative feedback because of how it ruined ranked matchmaking. Why is this back? You should be playing ranked for the rank, not carrots on sticks.

Get kills with X weapon
Doesn’t matter whether it’s the Sidekick or, God forbid, the Ravager. You’re now compelled to either not swap out your weapons, or seek out a weapon which has a 50% chance of spawning on game start due to rotating selection per match. You’re changing how you play not because it’s beneficial or because it’s fun to you specifically, but because it’s necessary to get cosmetics.

Splatter X people with vehicles
This is straight up on par with the challenges that were removed. Not only is yourself specifically getting a Ghost or Banshee, the easiest way to do this, incredibly rare in BTB, opponents aren’t brain dead. They’re going to jump, fire back with heavy weapons, or hijack you. Vehicle accessibility is a little easier in Fiesta of all game modes, but so are Rocket Launchers, Hydras and Skewers, so good luck.
I could go on and on. This whole thing is a blunder of a system. Just give us match-based XP determined by in-match score.

I feel like the new “earn X points in Y playlist” is them trying to find a compromise, since doing well in those playlists does increase the challenge faster. The problem is it does still force the player to play modes they don’t want to play.
This is unfortunately just a bad system from the get go.

In general, I agree. But, I don’t think it’s going anywhere.
The big problem with it is that you spend all your game time attempting to complete challenges in a week (which is more a grind than the 343i representatives are willing to admit), and you don’t get to enjoy other parts of the game, like Achievements, Campaign, and time in playlists you enjoy.

What I want to know challenge wise is how they will work once more battlepasses are available. Like will completing a challenge give experience to just a single pass or multiple? This is why I feel a system like MCC’s would be best; that way you can get points for challenges to put into whatever pass you want if you have multiple passes. I know that means some people will have a stockpile of points, but a lot of people won’t so I think it works out.
Didn’t they say that they were working on another way to grant XP but that this would take time (given that this will likely need actual programming). So right now the challenge system is being used to get as close to the “regular progression” envisioned by filling the dailies with “play any game” challenges and adding lots of “earn score in mode X” (which arguably does give some weight to how you play (kills, assists and playing the objective grant score).
It’s far from an ideal solution but likely the only one they could put in place in a timely manner. In that regard it’s a stopgap measure. I guess they’ll tweak it again to work alongside the match based XP instead of abolishing it. I very much see the weekly ultimates still being tied to the challenges (even though those so far have not been very “ultimate”).
Nah, they don’t need to can the whole challenge system. What they do need to do is implement an actual progression system, so the side-hobby-by-design challenges stop being the be-all-end-all of player progression.
The challenge system can be useful. But not with how it works as is.
At this point the only reason I’m even looking at challenges is for xp Gains. During the 6 weeks the MP has been out I haven’t been remotely interested in ONE of the weekly rewards. In fact it feels insulting to TRY to grind all week for a stupid sub par looking name plate? Like are you kidding me?
The only thing you’ll catch me grinding the weekly challenges for is a legendary helmet and or coating (that are unavailable through ANY other means but the challenges) other than that the challenges can almost be completely ignored. Especially once you’ve leveled the BP to 100

It’s actually stupid how 343 has this whole progress system set up and why I won’t buy any of the dumb battles passes. It’s just padded playtime because they don’t have jack… for content to add to this game. Maybe if they actually used their head for once and stop looking to make the game one big cash shop and actually create content, you know, their job we pay them to do? maybe we can get out of this Beta and actually start playing a game.
