Is there any reason why the object and camera motion blur seems to have been omitted?
I understand the removal of the temporal AA that gave Halo Reach it’s distinctively blurry and hazy appearance; this is a positive change. However, I feel the motion blur used by Bungie’s 360 Halo games was a shining example of just how cutting edge they were visually. Removing it feels, well, strange. Stranger still, the motion blur seems to be intact on Halo 3 and ODST, if I remember correctly. Please correct me if I’m wrong.
I would appreciate the option to re-enable it at the very least, seeing as I know some people are not fans of it.
In my opinion, now that the games on MCC will be supporting un-capped framerates (and will no longer be locked to 30 FPS) there is no reason to keep motion-blur. Motion blur is commonly used to “simulate” the visual appearance of higher frame-rates in games and movies that run at 30 FPS and 24 FPS respectively. However, once you reach 60 FPS and beyond the “need” for motion-blur becomes virtually non-existent, and can often cause players (like myself) to develop headaches or nausea. I think that motion-blur should be left as an option to be toggled on or off in the graphics settings and not removed wholesale, but to have it be forced on all the time somewhat defeats the purpose of all the other graphics improvements the team is trying to make to these old engines.
I completely agree with the idea of making it something that can be toggled on and off! However, removing it for all players without any choice is a bad idea. The way the motion blur plays off of fast-moving objects or the terrain around you in a speeding vehicle is visually pleasing. Ultimately, it’s not the world’s biggest loss, but I feel it’s a strong part of the 360 Halo games’ visual identity.
Edit: I’ll push this a step further and say that, because Halo 3 and ODST still have their motion blur, this omission creates an inconsistency within the Bungie games offered in the collection for seemingly no reason. While we’re at it, an option to disable the effect on the previous games would be a nice touch!
If you ask me, they should just make it toggle on \ off.
I personally dislike motion blur because it hurts my eyes and takes away from the beauty of a game. I turn it off in every single game I play (just like controller vibration, but that’s another topic entirely).
Why would I muddle the beautiful graphics of a game by blurring it out whenever I look around.
I believe the wise Dunkey called it “Eye melting mush”.
My guess would be to maintain performance with the new resolutions. Removing motion blur will also help make that framerate steady and high, especially as they increase the resolution. Temporal anti-aliasing is part of the post-processing stack. This means that it’s all done after the actual frame is drawn (along with bloom, depth of field, vignette…) Each additional post-processing step you add adds another full-image manipulation. MCC supports 4K resolution and HDR. TAA scales with the number of pixels, so increasing from 720p to 4K is a huge hit. It also means that each pixel changes from being a 32-bit set of 4 integers to a 96-bit set of floats. Floating point maths is way slower than integer maths.
Totally with you on this one. Motion blur, bloom, depth of field, all of these are post processing effects that are important visual elements. The problem with them was always just overuse, or plain bad quality. Having a toggle for all these should be a MUST in 2019 going forward, however just outright cutting the motion blur for no reason just feels off…
Also, since TAA was developed a lot more over the years, using a new implementation would have been nice, but jagged edges it is.
I really really wish there was an extra option, perhaps disabled by default, or a mod to enable motion blur again. 60 fps without any blur does feel bit unnatural as in normal life there’s supposed to be blur in anything going too fast even for high fps footage. Strangely, Halo 3 and I believe ODST still seems to have motion blur on, if they disabled it on Reach for being unnecessary.
At least there’s reshade to tweak graphics a little bit, to not use horrible overdone templates, but subtle ones to your liking. Unfortunately it doesn’t have any proper motion blur post processing on it and it would require velocity buffer from the game too. I can’t even remember what type of motion blur Reach for instance had, but I really like ones like Doom Eternal or Mordhau has.
