The UNSC Infinity could have been much more.

Its shown it is destroyed in Halo Infinite. But it doesn’t feel that emotional to know that. Its this big project to the UNSC in lore for exploration and for war but it was served with such small purpose and short little time.

It was meant to be the new base hub but you barely ever go on it besides like two missions in Halo 4, one on campaign and another in Spartan ops. And we never really got to see a good proper space combat with it besides the Spartan ops intro and then it floats around all of Halo 4 and Halo 5. In fact, you seen it run away more times than actually serving its purpose.

They could have done more with the UNSC Infinity but it had such a short span in the game doing such little purpose. It could have been better.

We don’t actually know that it’s been destroyed. We assume so, but we don’t truly know.

As said above, we don’t know if it’s been destroyed yet.

Me personally, I hope it is destroyed. I don’t much care for the Infinity. It’s way too overpowered. It fits thousands of troops and vehicles, it carries its own escort fleet, and it can mint Spartans… who in the entire galaxy could take that down? Everyone from Prometheans to a fringe sect of Insurrectionists have tried to take it down with little success.

It has the potential to become a writing crutch. If a writer is hitting a block in their story, there’s always the Infinity there to swoop in with some deus ex machina that will save the day in one form or another. Halo is at its best when humanity has its back against a wall. And with the current state of the galaxy, that’s a real possibility again. But with the Infinity, humanity will always have a safe haven that makes their back against the wall feel empty and hollow.

Wait where was it shown destroyed? We saw a broken Halo, but I didnt see the Infinity broken. I seriously doubt the Infinity gets destroyed at all.

I assumed destroyed, as we believe we saw it in the demo. And in the gameplay trailer, one of the cutscenes show show a holo map with pieces floating around saying “UNSC Infinity”

Not to mention Brohammer saying that they lost everything. The UNSC poured most of its resources into the Infinity, I believe. And it could of been the Infinity that caused the Halo ring to be broken.

In the demo, are you referring to the crashed ship in the background after you exit the Pelican? If so, that ship looked too small to be the Infinity. I assumed it was just some random UNSC frigate or something.

The pieces we saw floating around with the Infinity tag were crew that were being labeled as deceased, not pieces of the Infinity. Though that still lends some credence to your assertion that the Infinity is destroyed. If her whole crew is dead, it’s reasonable to assume the ship is dead too. But it could be just as likely that the Infinity was boarded and her crew was spaced by the Banished. If the opportunity arises for the Banished to seize control of the most powerful ship in the UNSC, then I think they’d take it. It’d be better for them strategically to have control of the ship rather than destroy it outright.

That would be a terrifying thought… the Banished in control of the Infinity.

Nah, it’s almost destroyed and boarded way too many times. First by rebels, then by Covenant and Prometheans, then by Covenant and Prometheans again, and then it was nearly destroy by rebels mixed in with Covenant it took months to repair. This is supposed to be the most powerful UNSC warship and it’s boarded so easily, I’m surprised it wasn’t destroyed in 4 by this point.

Eyy it was boarded easily but never had they taken the ship over ;), its probably a battle tactic to win by now who knows

As others have said, it’s unclear as of yet what state the Infinity will be in during the events of Infinite (it seems clear that it will be hobbled at best, and that it could be destroyed entirely, but there’s no hard confirmation one way or another). All this is to say that it very well may not be down and out forever, we’ll just have to wait and see. It could be lost with all hands, or simply grounded and temporarily out of commission like we saw in Halo 4.

As for what it could/should have been in the stories to date, I agree that its potential wasn’t ever really fulfilled in Halo 4 or 5. SpOps is really the best implementation of Infinity we’ve seen in anything yet, and even SpOps failed to quite sell me on its status as a juggernaut behemoth.

While it dwarfs the ships that comprised the H/C Era human armada, the Infinity doesn’t ever seem particularly invincible; in the H4 campaign, we only ever see it helpless against the Didact-- in SpOps, there are numerous occasions when it’s infiltrated and substantively threatened by Covenant and Promethian boarding parties, and in Halo 5, it only narrowly escapes the grasp of Cortana and her Created.

Of course it wouldn’t be interesting or narratively valuable if the Infinity represented an insurmountable threat to any of the UNSC’s enemies, but it should at least represent a very solid bulwark against Storm Covenant and Promethian aggression, and it never seemed to intimidate either of those factions to a degree that justified its in-lore reputation. Certainly, from what we’ve seen of Infinite, it didn’t do anything much to dissuade the Banished from launching a devastating assault on UNSC forces at Zeta Halo.

The Infinity is certainly impressive on paper, but the “show, don’t tell,” element of demonstrating its power and utility as a real game-changer for humanity in the storytelling hasn’t really been accomplished. I’m hoping that Infinite gives it a more meaningful role, either as the endgame objective (Chief’s ultimate goal being to get it back in action to turn the tide against the Banished) or as a powerful “last-stand,” that accomplishes something truly valuable for the UNSC’s efforts against the Banished.

Whether or not the Infinity makes it through Infinite, I do hope Lasky and Palmer survive (Roland, too!). Although I think these characters haven’t been utilized phenomenally to date, seeing them cope with the total loss of the Infinity (or even a situation where it just seems completely hopeless) would be a great place to flesh out and develop their characters through palpable adversity. And, honestly, it would just suck to see Lasky die- he’s honestly one of the most likable and sympathetic characters in the history of the series (this is a good and a bad thing), and seeing him die without getting a chance to get at least a glimpse into a darker side of his character would be a shame.

Given the open world nature of Halo: Infinite, it would be neat to be able to explore the Infinity on a large scale. A mission across it would be awesome, but even more awesome (to me) would be getting to venture from your bunk to the armor-equipping station to the bridge for a briefing and then to the bay to board a Pelican.

I’m sure this may not appeal to everyone, but the thought of that excites me. It would also further emotionally attach us to the ship and may help remedy some of what the OP is rightfully saying.

Feels like a pretty bad dues ex machina when it’s failed to prevent Requiem from taking a dip into a star, the Absolute Record from being blipped away, and the Guardians from knocking off Earth among other things.

As far as a safe haven, it doesn’t make humanities struggle fee hollow. Like the Galactica, it’s one ship and if humanity really only has one place they can call safe, that’s still fairly dire.

If Halo fans weren’t so insecure about the idea of Humanity having a competent starship that actually lasts for more than one game, then the Infinity could’ve become the series’ equivalent of the Enterprise. Theres nothing tension-breaking about the Infinity when the entire previous trilogy has shown vastly overpowered covenant ships glassing and destroying UNSC planets and ships left and right, some of which were far larger than the Infinty.

So please 343, the UNSC is already heavily nerfed by the Created conflict - don’t stretch the suspension of disbelief to the breaking point in Infinite by nerfing them in the name of rabid fanboys who only want Master Chief being the only objectively correct way to win the war no matter how contrived it is.

We’ll have to see if it’s actually destroyed, which it may very well not be.
