Halo was always about Mapcontrol!
Knowing exactly at which time and location what Powerweapon/Powerup would respawn.
Infinite’s Weapon Balancing has in mind that EVERY Weapon should be viable. With the starting weapons (especially the AR) being so Powerful and the game having such a low TTK, said Powerweapons won‘t be a priority to the players anymore.
Meanwhile in Halo 2,3 and Reach you had Weapon-tears. The starting weapons being always mid-tear at best, (H2 SMG being the worst) you had both Teams rotating on the Map to get possession of the Weapons/Powerups they’d need to grant an advantage and maybe even aquire Mapcontrol at the higher Skillratings. (Spawntrapping p.ex.)
In Infinite most people wont have to bother to fight over a sniperrifle/shotgun because the AR has pretty much all it needs and the pistol can shoot crossmap. Which means that players wont even rotate as much on the map and some sections of it will not even be visited once during a match.
To me Weapon Balancing in a Game like Halo means that there absolutely have to be Weapontears. You need weapons that suck compared to others. In example the Halo 3 Pistol vs Halo 3 Battlerifle.
You start out with something mid-tear and fight for the High-tear stuff. When the Hightear weapons are about to respawn, you get in position an the battle restarts.
I hope that this gets some attention as it is pretty much the only thing (except the radar changes) that bothered me during the first flight. Really hoping the best for Halo: Infinite, the team behind it and it‘s competitive scene.
Halo Infinite does a great job with most of the weapons and give you plenty of reasons to pick them up. You should not have a useless weapon to start with just to emphasize this. I feel like the power weapons will be sought after just like the previous Halo games just as much. The AR is perfectly balanced IMO.

Agreed.
The Assault Rifle was treated poorly in most of the games, being a low tier weapon that was almost always dropped for something stronger. Halo Infinite’s AR is perfect. Close to mid range auto rifle, reliable, consistent and useful in any fight. You shouldn’t start with a garbage weapon. Having a good AR at least lets people fight back when the enemy has map control. And believe me, the AR as good as it is still isn’t something i’d pick up to replace a power weapon. The power weapons on the map are still the top dogs

It’s weird that this was mentioned because most people use the pistol.

I saw about a balance of AR and SK kills in most matches on PC and Xbone

I almost exclusively used the pistol. I wonder what the TTK with both of those are?
It was situationally useful in Halo 3 and it still will be in this game. The AR is decent but not strong enough to stop the Sidekick.
The power weapons are still super strong and absolutely worth controlling. Sniper, rockets and powerups will forever be essential. Equipment probably not as much, but I think grapple will become very important especially in objective. There is so much to fight over and so many ways to do it. AR beats sidekick if you miss shots, but sidekick still wins. That’s how it should be. Most CQB weapons beat AR, but not massively which means you can still contest. Nothing worse than spawning against an enemy who has weapons and map control and have no fighting chance.

Unless they play on Controller then its a pain to use in this Halo. As in older Halo it used to be slower shooting but more damaging, here the Pistol is faster but smaller single shot damage which eh… isnt working well with a controller to say the least
Eh but overall ya i think the AR is here perfectly fine, the whole Halo 3 MP was runied for me because of how -Yoink- the AR, Magnum and BR were, the BR in Infinite is similar to Halo 3 but still feels kinda better, i would prefer Halo 2A or Halo 5 / 2C BR but that would probably making it a power weapon.
I think even in Reach a DMR was stronger then an AR in Close quarter not to mention semi medium range. The Weapon efficency was just to much limited in older Halo i believe. I think in Infinite no weapon is an jack of all trades for ranges but youre still not a sitting duck with most guns at the wrong range.

I didn’t really practice this combo, but I believe the AR recieved a headshot bonus. Take down the shields with the AR, and finish with two more rounds to the head. Feather the trigger if you’re too far out of range. I assume that would be faster than switching to the Sidekick and firing a single shot.
Having a useless weapon and being unable to even fight back isn’t fun though, so I’m glad to see a move to each weapon being capable. There’ll still be weapons better suited for certain situations.
Strong disagree. The AR feels just fine. The weapons on the map, such as the BR, are better, so you’ll want to pick them up. You aren’t though left out to dry just because you don’t have a BR.

It’s working well on controller however there is a skill gap for sure. I love the pistol 7 shot mini game on controller lol. The BR TTK is the exact same with 4 shots however it body shots are faster than Halo 3 but slower than Halo 5.

Depends on the range but yes. Altough the headshot bonus is very small. There are some Tests on youtube.
I don’t think anyone in their right mind would pass up the rocket launcher to hold onto the AR. Some may pass up on picking up say a sniper rifle but that may be more because they may not be very good with the sniper. For example I personally would not pick up the sniper off the bat because I’m not a very good sniper so I’d rather hang on to the AR because I am more competent with it. I still will sometimes pick up sniper just to deny it from the enemy team though. I think the AR/Sidekick starting combo works quite well. The AR is definitely stronger than in some previous games but from what I’ve experienced the damage range falls off rather quickly. If you are at medium ranges there is no chance the AR will out-duel a BR for example. The Sidekick is also incredibly powerful if you can land shots with it. During the short PVP test they ran I even got outgunned once or twice at close range by someone using the pistol while I was shooting them with the AR. The difference is that the AR does not rely purely on trying to hit headshots for maximum efficiency whereas the pistol requires a little bit more precision. However if you have that accuracy with the pistol then the AR gets beat by Sidekick probably 8 times out of 10 at close range. The AR is definitely a gun that you combo with melee attacks but in my opinion that is how it should be. From what I’ve played so far I feel like each and every weapon in the game has a place where it is strong, which is exactly how a game like Halo should be.
The assault rifle is the most viable weapon in the game in my opinion, it can kill at medium range with a good TTK if you shoot in bursts or a good combo switch to the MK50 to headshot.
Sure it is inferior to a Commando/Pulse/BR but it is not to be thrown away at the first opportunity.
I did 3 games with only AR and the pistol and no surprise: The best starting equipment of the serie, he can do the job.
The AR is still the lowest tier weapon in infinite.
In Halo 3 low tier weapons like the AR and Magnum were considerably worse than the BR, giving you a higher advantage if your team collected more powerful weapons
the difference in Infinite is the advantage is reduced so you have a better chance with low tier weapons.
This argument was used against Halo Reach when it released, people claiming the magnum was too effective, however they were wrong. Youre still going to get outplayed by needlers, plasma weapons will take shields down faster, etc.
The main reason i prefer this type of halo is because it makes free for all gametypes more playable. In Halo 3 free for all is cheap and very much based on luck, because you can spawn next to a br or sniper and win the entire round. Whereas in Reach you always have a chance to fight the spartan closest to you
The thing is, every weapon should be viable, but each one still needs to fill a niche. Halo Infinite goes in the right direction when you start to compare weapons to each other, but the real issue is that nearly all the weapons in Infinite are far too accurate. Everything has an increased range, which makes all the weapons perform somewhat the same. People aren’t getting into engagements at 500 meters in Halo, they start shooting at each other when they’re much closer. Because all of the weapons are so accurate within 100 meters, most of the weapons feel like they’re all doing about the same.
Most of the weapons in Infinite need to be made less accurate. That includes the BR, Sidekick, and Commando. We need less effective rage, to make weapons fit their role better in real world gameplay. Each weapon will feel more distinct, TTK will drop by a little bit, melee battles will become a little more viable, and hits will be more rewarding because feathering your trigger (Something the player has direct control over.) will be more effective.
Infinite is close. But the TTK and weapon accuracy of Halo 5 is still carried over. If 343 can crack the Bungie code that makes weapons feels distinct, while avoiding the Bungie curse that makes only a few weapons truly viable, Infinite could be a home run. I’m figuratively biting my nails to the root over weapon balance in Infinite. Will 343 listen?
The sniper.skewer. heatwave and shogun simply aren’t worth grabbing at this stage rather than nerf the starting weapons they need to make the power weapons more powerful or user friendly even the Rockets were just ok you needed a near direct hit the splash damage wasn’t that great .they are supposed to be POWER weapons for a reason to feel powerful
I honestly liked the changes, having an AR that’s not utter trash ( I didn’t play 5 which apparently had good ARs from whati heard), was a great experience and the fact the sniper riffle and gravity hammer actually required more skill and weren’t just “Here’s some free kills” weapons you’d pick up and then bully people with until you run out of ammo was also great change, especially on PC where weapons like the sniper were utterly insane with a mouse in the classic halos, even i who doesn’t have all that great aim more so just average aim would go absolutely ham in Halo 3 when I’d pick a sniper due to how easy it was to use and land shots, especially since Halo 3’s movement is so much more slower, making headshots and shots in general so much easier to land versus Infinite.
I personally never liked how in older Halos there was basically a small pool of viable weapons and a large pool that no one ever touched, unless you made game modes or edited weapon spawns via forge where you’d remove stuff like BRs/DMRs and some power weapons to force people in using the other gear.
