Why is there a need for the ridiculous sun glare? Can’t see anything on Orion in a addition that nap sucks.
Personally, its the best map yet. Firrst rule of engagement as proposed by Sun tsu art of war, keep the sun at your back. With the layout it really shows the trick jumps capable in H5
There should be a glare metre in forge! Machinimas would be so pretty…
Its actually really smart what they did.
There are two major power positions on the map: the one with that small hut made of glass where the hydra spawns and the tower on the other side. The sunlight is important to the second pp because there is less cover and you can be naded way more easily. I think it was a really thoughtful move by 343 and proves that they’ve put quite a lot of thoughts and effort in making the game balanced
I agree, this is battlefield levels of unnecessary glare. I want to fight my enemies not the damn sun. And even if they keep it they should tone it way the hell down.
True, i hate Orion and to many power weapons
I like the layout of Orion itself. It is balanced. On the flip side there are way to many things wrong with it…the sun glare, the number of weapons, the one-side spawning (i.e they are the Sniper and they keep picking you off before you can get far, you go right back where you started). Again it shows a lack of neutral spawn points that take you out of the fight and away from normal slights lines so you have a chance to flank. It’s like a polar opposite to Truth where you ALWAYS end up with an enemy looking at you when you spawn.

Im sure thats what 343 was thinking when they created that… Oh wait no, it was probably the art department thinking that it “looked cool” and not accounting for how it took away from gameplay.
Lets not forget that you can climb halfway up the cliffs on that map too. If you are red team you are hard to spot against the background. Yet another poor color choice for the map.
to be honest, with those 2 glaring issues (sorry, couldn’t resist the pun), I cant tell how the game “actually” plays. Its hard to judge how the map would work based on the geometry of it instead of some arbitrary lighting decision.
I just played on Orion and my eyes still hurt.
Only been put into a match with Orion once, but I loved the aesthetics!
Try to keep in mind this is still the beta and the game is still around 10 months away from release
I understand why they’ve done it but yeah I agree its awful.
I also find this map and the glare mechanic really frustrating. The person with the high ground already has the advantage and now they’ve given them the sun at their backs. The maps setup is poor as well. The team that spawns on Hydra side can get the snipe and just take out the other team as they spawn. That little window box is possibly the most ridiculous part of that.
I hope this map is not in the final game because it’s not balanced and really frustrating when things don’t go your way because it’s close to impossible to turn the tide.
Inb4 “the sun glare isn’t that bad”

****also, how the hell did i get a bulltrue? 343, you’re on thin -Yoinking!- ice
if sun glare was in campaign, I would love it. In multiplayer, I dont like it.
I’m glad I wrote up detailed observations on all these different things. It’s part of the bigger topic of lighting, color and look in general but here’s the part on the lighting:
> On lighting, dark area’s are too dark. With the dark areas, even if you have a hard light, like a star, you can still see extremely well in the shade. It doesn’t turn into a black hole. You look outside at the shadow of a house on a sunny day, you can see everything in that shadow with just as much detail as if it was directly in the sun.

> On the flip side, just because something is in direct sunlight, doesn’t mean every little thing gives off a glare. The only thing that gives off a glare is glass and highly polished metal. The lighting all around is too extreme. It seemed like I was always looking into the sun and the glare made it impossible to see, let alone shoot at people in Halo 4. It seems like H5 is headed in the same direction. I’d hate to have an otherwise fun game ruined by being unable to see because of a glare. You see that the view screen on the Infinity can reduce glare so much you can very clearly, and in great detail, see the surface of a star. Mjolnir, being state-of-the-art, would have this feature for it’s visor. Given that being able to see is a requirement for not getting killed in battle, there should be next to no bloom.

> It seems to me that 343 doesn’t know exactly how to implement some of the graphical effects they’re going for. It feels like a student learning how to do some technique. A student that hasn’t quite learned that less is more. It seems they haven’t quite learned where less is more (lighting) and where you actually need more (vibrant colors).
In addition 343, you are telling me that a futuristic super soldier doesn’t have sun glasses or even a tinted shield. Come on your better than that.
rule #1 Lens flare
Orion sucks because the limited safe spawn locations (I got tired being locked in that little cave behind the base near the sniper because the enemy understood they didn’t need to advance, just shoot and nade) and its overly open map style (close range players are useless, and so is the sword and AR)
If you get shot, you can’t get to cover fast enough because it might as well be half a klick away. I’m at my most effective on that map when my team turtles in the base near the cliff and forces close range fights, but lord forbid we let them get the sword and sniper. Sword flushes us out and the sniper gets free kills.
When I spawn as blue team I like to turn right, run up the platform where the DMR and sticky grenades are, where it overlooks the Hydra spawn, and throw stickies over to blow the Hydra either off the map or towards the center of the map as a big middle finger to red team
When I spawn as red team I like to run out to the DMR spawn to the right where I can see the sniper spawn and pick people off as they rush the sniper. Works 80% of the time.
Also, at the sniper spawn where there are cliffs around that area, you can clamber up to a small ledge that’s just below the “return to battlefield” barrier near the fallen log on the blue side of the sniper spawn, and you get a good vantage point across the middle and red side of the map. It should stay in since you can’t move without falling off and you have a limited view of the map, albeit a high one.
