The State of Halo and Why I am Done

I have been playing Halo since day one of CE’s release. The franchise has given me so many great memories and friends that I still have to this day. I love halo, by far my favorite game. But after spending probably more than a year of my life playing Halo games, I am finished with it. I have lost faith with 343i (that they never really earned) and I have grown tired of the division within the once tight and united community. I write this not to simply complain, I do not like to complain, but Halo had meant so much to me that I wanted to voice my displeasure and hope that maybe somehow, 343 can right this ship for the next batch of gamers coming up, because I am already lost.

Halo CE was a landmark game to be sure, it showcase the potential of the genera on the console and blazed a trail that the industry had to follow. The story for Halo CE is really what I remember most, thinking back to the second mission, Halo, and jumping the warthog out of the lower tunnel I had just fought through to reveal the (at the time) massive open world. That is one of those few moments in a game where I was just awe struck the first time I played it. The only other game that gave me that feeling was my first experience with Skyrim. I played Halo CE’s campaign probably 100 or more times, it never got old, and I always had fun.

Then came Halo 2, which somehow managed to shape the way the industry of competitive gaming would take for decades to come. Halo 2 had one of the best, to this day, multiplayer experiences ever in a console game. It brought popularity to MLG and helped build a community that would only become stronger in the coming decade. Most long time Halo gamers consider H2 their favorite due to the strict focus on competition. The fast paced gameplay and tremendous skill gap have those who dedicated enough time the ability to showcase their hard earned skills. For me though, Halo 3 was where it all came together.

Halo 3had a stronger campaign than H2 and more variety in the multiplayer, it was less of a revolution on the gamely front than H1 or H2 and more evolution, where H3 revolutionized the industry was community features. Halo 3 gave the community so much to do, forge and the file share system are two huge additions amongst the massive quantity of others. These features created sub-communities to developer inside of the broader Halo community. Halo 3 allowed third parties to look at stat tracking which gave birth to HaloCharts and HaloTracker. Halo 3 have every person something to do, casual, competitive, or creative you had something for you. Halo was addicting, fun, motivating, and most of all, it was something I could share with friends. I can remember every game i ran into an MLG pro and how sick that was. I can remember running into the HaloCharts #1 & #2 players for the first time and how exciting it was. Everything had meaning, and becoming friends with those guys and girls a true pleasure.

The next installment was Reach, and even though I did not like some of the choices Bungie made, it was still a solid game that tried to make a new innovation the same way that H1 & H2 did with gameplay and H3 did with community features. I felt like it may have been a step too far but it was not going to hurt my feelings for the franchise. But that was the first time I sensed the division growing the community. It was almost a sin to some if you liked Halo 3 more, and those who did felt the same about those who liked Reach more. But that was nothing a newer, solid entry the franchise couldn’t fix.

Then came 343i’s first crack at Halo with Halo 4. Halo 4, well, it is almost unanimously thought of as the worst Halo. Most didn’t like the campaign (though it did intrigue me) and the multiplayer just was not good. It felt like a hybrid of CoD and Halo, which will ultimately please neither CoD players or Halo players because it is too much like Halo for CoD players and too much like CoD for Halo players. This was forgivable though, it was 343i’s first shot, a hard lesson learned but the next game had to be great.

In drops the Master Chief Collection, said to be all 4 of the Halo games with the Master Chief with campaigns and multiplayer “as they shipped on their launch date.” What!? I can play halo 3 again with 60fps? Lone Wolf, Swat, Snipers, TS, Doubles, and all of their social counterparts? All that and all of Halo 2’s multiplayer and CE online for the first time!? Sign me up! Then I get home unboxed the game and installed it. Imagine my surprise when I saw next to none of that. That’s okay, even though they are mashed up playlists with 3 or 4 of the games in them, it will still be fun right? Well, maybe if I was able to find more than 10 games in the first SIX MONTHS of the game’s release. Unfortunately, by the time 343i fixed their broken game’s matchmaking, all of us who were swindled into buying this game had moved on to Titanfall or some other game. The kicker is too, that because the community shrank they put in ban for quitting out of games, not thinking that maybe a person might quit because half the people playing now stand afk which is no fun to be stuck with on a team. So, you quit and prompt get banned. They can’t ban me, I quit.

Well, okay, 343i now had Halo 5 coming. It is going to be the best Halo yet they say. So what do they deliver? They deliver the worst campaign, no social features, no forge, no btb, microtransactions, no multiplayer map variety at launch, the same player mechanics I see in Titanfall, CoD Blops 3, Crysis 3, basically any popular fps in 2015 or 2014, and no passion, no soul, just another horrible cash grab from the Halo name. 343i has taken the core gameplay which made halo unique and made it like everything else, it feels uninspired. I assume they did this to try and take some market share from CoD and other shooters, but as I explained earlier, if you try please everyone, you are sure please no one. I know they want to do their own thing to differentiate from what Bungie did, but you have to do it without changing the core experience. I am also not starting that Halo 5, in a vacuum, is not a good game, it is a very polished shooter, but for, it is not a good Halo game. Once you name your game Halo, it comes with certain expectations that have to be met, and Halo 5 continues the trend of leaving the core of what made Halo feel like Halo in the past.

So where are we now? The community is in tatters and it is shrinking by the day. I can’t watch this anymore, it is like watching a friend die a very painful death, I’d rather it just be over. That is why I will not purchase Halo 6, I do not have faith that 343i care about the community they inherited and are only interested in a quick buck, how much money they can squeeze out of the Halo brand. Well, they will not be getting my money. I can’t really explain everything that has lead to this choice, so I will leave it as the more general points above. I am not claiming that H1-H3 were perfect, they certainly have their flaws, but their flaws gave them personality. 343i’s entries have felt lifeless to me and their populations reflect the fact that I am not alone. I do truly hope that those that do purchase Halo 6 do not feel as disappointed as I do now. Best wishes to all, it was a pleasure getting to know so many over the last 15 years.

It may be worth a read, but a solid wall of text won’t command many people’s attention. Don’t suppose you can edit it into paragraphs…please?

You’ll be back.

Yeah, sorry, I wrote it on my phone which made the formatting a bit more time consuming. Thank you for the feedback.

It’s like your inside my head. Kinda scary, but more scary is the fact that Halo is in the condition that it is. I don’t blame you for feeling the way that you do. I’m not far off from there. I’m not preordering H6, but I will give it one last shot. MCC, H4 and H5 were strikes 1,2 and 3. If 343 can’t get their -Yoink- wired with H6 I’m out too. I never thought a day would come when I wasn’t excited to play Halo, but I haven’t played H5 in months and Halo feels like a soulless corpse and a shadow of what it used to be, with no unique identity.

I feel the same, when H2 and H3 were announced I could not contain my excitement. Waiting for those games to release felt like eternity and they were worth every second the wait. Those games were special and unique. The new games have just lost that feel of what made them special which is a shame. I guess that is the best way I can word it, Halo 4 & 5 are not bad games, they just aren’t special like the first three. I do not think bad of those who like the new installments, they do have things to offer. But for the community that grew up with the original trilogy, we were spoiled with games that are not simply great for their time, they are great compared to any game from any time. I really do want 343 to recapture the magic the first three games had for H6, but I have just lost my faith that they can. You’ll have to let me know if H6 and the assumed Halo 3 Anniversary is worth a buy as well.

I’m getting close to quitting too dude

If you’re a true fan of the Halo series, you’d stick with it through the good times AND bad. Don’t jump ship the second things get rough though if you’re willing to do so, it’s probably for the best

I do not agree with that. I have stuck with the series when they made choices I did not like. But now I am 4 years in after H4 and 343 continue to move in a direction that lacks originality and divides the community. They deliver games that lack content that was present on titles in H2 & H3 before the dlc’s, and they deliver broken games that will not find matches for people (not just the MCC, but H5 can’t find matches if you are highly ranked). If I continue to purchase and play Halo games I do not like it; 1. aggravates me because I do not find it fun, and 2. makes me a hypocrite because of I truly do not support the direction they are going, why would I still be playing? The only way a company will hear the communities voice is through player count and sales (not playing or buying the games if we do not like them). If we keep playing games we don’t like, that tells them we like the way they are going. If we buy their new games, even if they are sub par, that tells them they can continue down that track because we will continue to throw out money at it simply because it says “Halo” on the box. So if you like H5, continue playing it, I hope you do enjoy it, I do not. But saying someone who has put over 90 days of game time in H3’s multiplayer alone (not counting LAN parties, campaign, or any other title) is not a “true fan” is nonsense. The fact that it saddens me so much to see the state the franchise is now in that I would stop playing to show my displeasure to the developer is what makes me a true fan. I appreciate everyone who is sticking with the franchise through the recent installments in hopes that they will return to form. I, unfortunately have given 343i three games, and it is the strikes and I’m out. I wish you the best going forward and hope that you sticking with it pays off for you.

If you don’t agree with what 343 is doing with Halo, why waste your time here on Waypoint? Plenty of people continue to play Halo and support the series while voicing what they do and do not like about the series. Every game series goes through a rough patch, some longer than others. Right now, Halo is going through its rough patch. I’m not the biggest fan of where 343 has taken Halo either but I still continue to play. I’ve played Halo since CE. I’ve earned over 10,000 EXP in Halo 3, hit the rank of Inheritor on Halo Reach, and have racked up thousands upon thousands of kills via LAN parties and tournaments since 2001. Never once have I ever thought about giving up on the series.

Everyone is entitled to an opinion and mine is that if you’re a true fan of the Halo series, you don’t “give up” just because things are rough. If you don’t like it, take a break and play something else. If you’re honestly going to give up then there’s no need to waste your time here.

The reason I wrote anything is because I want H6 to be good for the next batch of gamers. I am all out of passes to give for 343 so I wrote what I did in hopes that someone who can get something done might see it. Is that likely, admittedly not, but if there is a chance I felt it worth writing.

I am not saying you are not a fan of the series at all, or that you hadn’t played the originals so you wouldn’t know, I am just defending my stance. I too had over 10k exp, 50’s in playlists and so on, but I couldn’t sit still and say nothing with how I feel the franchise has gone. You clearly love the series as I do, but I have had too many experiences in my life where I kept giving a pass on things hoping they would change and they never did.

I am happy you still support the series, I really am, Halo needs people who can give feedback to the devs and get the series turned around. Unfortunately, I find the new games to be more frustration and disappointment then they are worth. If Halo 6 comes out and gets the same acclaim that the first three games did, maybe I will rent it and take a look, but as it sits now, I can not support the current games and the name halo doesn’t carry the same weight with me. Call it a prolonged break, or quitting on the series, or whatever you will but this is what is right for me. I do not want to play a game that doesn’t bring me satisfaction. Gmes are a brief break away from the troubles of the work day and real world for me, I do not want to be frustrated playing games as well.

But, I have gotten off my point of the post, which was more the state of the game, me leaving it is more of an example of how it has left me feeling. I do not want to debate what defines being a fan of the series with you because it is not really why I wrote the post. I am very interested in what you do and do not like about the current games as compared to the original trilogy though. If you don’t mind, please do share that, I’d love to hear your thoughts. Until then, have a good evening man.

You have right here a full testament of your history in halo

I agree with you 100%, I guess I just have more hope and optimism than most. I mean, if the Chicago Cubs can get to their first World Series in almost 100 years, 343 can certainly turn things around.

I’m much like you, I’ve played Halo since the beginning. It’s all I’ve played since Xbox launched in 2001. I’ve played countless hours and all nighters with friends and have hosted more LAN events and tournaments than I care to count. I still host LAN’s to this day though doing so with the Xbox One’s is impossible because they don’t support LAN. That’s a rant for another day. I started my business, “70MGame”, in 2007 where I host LAN’s, tournaments, midnight launches, convention game rooms, anything that involves video games. Nearly every event I’ve hosted has had a Halo tournament. It was manageable when Halo 4 came out but that was it because again, the Xbox One came out and it can’t LAN so it made things very difficult.

I’m angry at Microsoft because the Xbox One doesn’t support LAN anymore which makes no sense because PC gaming has, and always will, be ahead of console gaming but they still have LAN support. Because of that, hosting tournaments for Halo has become incredibly difficult. If I have to travel to host an event, I have to go out days ahead of time to test out the internet capabilities to ensure it can handle 16 Xbox One’s sucking up a ton of bandwidth then I have to make sure each person who has signed up for the tournament has an Xbox Live Gamertag otherwise it becomes complicated. I digress and I apologize. This is still a very sore topic for me.

Now on to 343, Halo is still Halo but its changed so much that its hard to recognize outside of Campaign. I recently played Halo 5 Campaign again and loved it! I jumped the gun too quickly. I’m not the biggest fan of how we play as Locke for 90% of the game but I still thoroughly enjoyed it. Multiplayer has become a hodgepodge of low quality, half effort, competitive gamplay. I’m not a fan of how competitive multiplayer is. Not everything needs to be based around rank and seasons. There’s next to nothing in the way of casual playlists though, to be fair, as of lately there’s been more effort with Team Action Sack and weekend playlists. The gameplay has been sped up so much that it feels like another game. Halo Reach introduced Loadouts/Spartan Abilites which was a game changer but it still felt like Halo. With Halo 5, you can Sprint all the time, you have Spartan Charge, Dash, Clamber, so much that has changed to where it just doesn’t feel like Halo. From playing Halo CE from Day 1 to today with Halo 5, its almost like you can’t compare. The quality of “DLC” has been extremely disappointing too. People don’t like to pay so they demand free stuff. All we’ve seen is free armor, weapon skins, and half effort reworked maps that have new names. What happened to the days where we got quality DLC that we had to wait every few months for instead of a huge quantity of crap? I miss how, as a player, you could feel special when you earned rare armor. Examples being Halo 3’s Recon Armor. You had to go and earn all the Vidmaster Achievements to unlock it then when people saw you, all they wanted to do was kill you because they were jealous of the amazing armor. Same thing goes for the Hayabusa Armor when you earned all the skulls in Halo 3. People were flipping out when that was first discovered so when people earned it, it stood out from everyone else. Last example being Halo Reach’s Haunted Helmet for hitting the rank of Inheritor. It stood out and the players who had it were “the cool kids”. We don’t get any of that with Halo 5 because armor is basically given away and when there’s 175+ different types of armor, no one truly stands out from anyone else.

I’m not a fan of where 343 has taken Halo from the aspect of multiplayer. Campaign is okay but multiplayer is extremely frustrating to play but I continue to play, in small increments, because I love Halo and I’ll support the series through thick and thin with the hopes that something will change sooner or later. Being a life long Halo fan playing from the early LAN day’s of Halo CE and mod infested servers of Halo 2 to the armor ability, cutthroat competitive gameplay of Halo 5, its disheartening to see that it’s changed so much, especially since 343 has taken over the series. Just as long as I continue to voice my thoughts, concerns, and opinions, someone will listen. 343 always listens, they just don’t acknowledge it.

Everyone is different and I don’t mean to come off sounding so badly when I say, “true fans would stick to the series through good times and bad”. I guess I’m just more optimistic and hopeful. I truly love Halo and have been obsessed with the series since we got our first glimpse of the trailer in 2000. I hope that 343 figures out how to make it feel like Halo once again.

Sorry to hear that OP, hopefully you will find your way back to Halo again. Sometimes a break can be good - never know, maybe there will be something that pulls you back in 2017 or the year after
