The old Halos were stuck in the stone age movement wise. There is no reason why we can’t clamber, sprint, or slide, in a video game. I used to only like Halo for it’s story and now I actually like the gameplay, the few things about the originals that I liked were the weapons, and shields. If the radar went back to 25m then all will be well.

Games that have long kill times feel very clunky and awkward with sprint because unlike in a game like COD where people die pretty much instantly you’re going to be dropping out of sprint for 1/2/3/4+ seconds at a time. When you’re not sprinting you feel incredibly slow.

If that’s how you feel then go play those games! Don’t talk about how a certain franchise is doing something that fits your play style better than this one and ask that this franchise change to accommodate you.

No, that’s exactly what we’re gonna do.

I’m not sure what your point is because the same thing could be said for the pro-sprint opinions as well. Both sides are going to have uniformed opinions, but from what I’ve read, it seems the majority of the anti-sprint crowd is a lot more informed about how things affect gameplay than the majority of the pro-sprint crowd.

Because 1, this is halo, not doom, and two il rephrase myself, gameplay > all

The anti sprinters on this thread have all had valid opinions, mainly because not lowering your weapon makes gameplay faster and more fun, people like you can’t see past your idea that removing sprint is regressing the game

A halo ce 2v2 on blood gulch to 50 takes the same amount of time as a h5 2v2 to 25 on truth, not lowering your weapon and having a higher BMS makes the game much faster, not slower

But… that’s exactly what was done to Halo. It changed to offer a different playstyle because another game was doing well with it. The franchise changed to accommodate people who like Sprint (like you). How ironic.

As for your comparison between sprinting and reloading, the difference is how each mechanic affects combat and mobility.

With Sprint, combat and mobility (at least full mobility) are severed from one another. If you’re sprinting, you can traverse the map at the speed it was built for BUT you can only do so facing forward and you cannot fire your weapon. If you’re not sprinting, you can traverse the map regardless of which direction you’re facing and fire your weapon BUT you do so at a slower speed than it was built for. Whether sprinting or not, players are always disadvantaged and players always have limits to how you can traverse the map that you wouldn’t without the Sprint mechanic.

With reloading, combat is stopped after expending all ammo in your magazine. You retain full mobility regardless of whether you’re firing, reloading, or swapping weapons (so it has no real bearing on map design/traversal). Weapons are balanced with rate-of-fire, damage, range, and magazine size/reload speed in mind. The need to reload makes players mindful of whether or not they can take on a given number of enemies without limiting the amount of ammo they can hold to an extreme low. Even if players have to reload while in combat, that doesn’t give the reloading player any easy way to escape. Since you can reload at will and players have no advantage while in the process of reloading, there is an optimal state for players to be in and the mechanic adds a dynamic to combat without becoming a detriment to mobility.

TL:DR - It can be said that Sprint adds a dynamic to mobility, but becomes a detriment to combat. Reloading adds a dynamic to combat without becoming a detriment to mobility.

If you don’t like lowering your weapon then DON’T SPRINT! The walking speed is the same in H5 as all the Halos before, so if you want to walk backwards while shooting you can still do that!

thats not an option or even the issue…i dont mind being able to sprint and do all of these cool things by myself…its when literally every single person whos playing the game is doing it that it becomes an issue…whether someone chooses to use something available to them doesnt really matter when everyone else is still using it…its still affecting you

> “forced to play without sprint” I was forced to play without it. Halo CE, Halo 2, Halo 3, Halo ODST. And guess what- when I go back and play them, they feel slow. It feels like the game drags on forever with no end. So sprint > no sprint-
>
> You question my intelligence? I deny the existence of yours.

well sir you don’t seem to have a great understanding of halo if you think CE plays slow. I don’t want a slow game and the removal of sprint will not cause the game to be slow. some reasons how sprint negatively effects the game
1 MAP DESIGN: maps are scaled to accommodate sprint this increases the time it takes to move around the map at shooting speed which means all engagements take place in a space that was not designed for the slower movement speed.
2 MAP FLOW: sprint effects the ability to read where your enemy is or might be in relation to when they died and possible spawn locations this was a great aspect of the no sprint design this is lost when the maps are so large and with sprint allowing players to move faster than a base movement speed,
3 COMBAT RESOLUTION:. in h5 a lot of engagements are not resolved due to thruster and sprint allowing people to get away when poorly positioned or caught out in the open, also the large scale maps make this an even bigger problem due to not being able to close the gap between you and your opponent at shooting speed and sprint allowing opposition teammates to get to the gunfight faster than it takes to finish the kill.
If you would like me to stop questioning your intelligence please offer a counter argument as to the reasons why sprint is a good thing for HALO.

> If you don’t like lowering your weapon then DON’T SPRINT! The walking speed is the same in H5 as all the Halos before, so if you want to walk backwards while shooting you can still do that!

While the base movement speed is roughly the same as previous games, the scale of maps is not. With maps being designed so that players can get from Point A to Point B in a given amount of time, Sprint speed is taken into account. Maps have become larger to accommodate for Sprint’s use and that leaves the BMS as disproportionate to map size; whereas in Sprint-less Halos, maps were designed to accommodate the BMS. Maps have to be planned out to accommodate the fastest speed players are able to achieve (aside from with Speed Boost), just as weapons have to be designed/balanced to kill a player with full shields.

So no, simply not sprinting isn’t an effective tactic when the game is built around the mechanic.

> well sir you don’t seem to have a great understanding of halo if you think CE plays slow.

First of all the maps in Halo have always been big! Second, it’s a -Yoinking!- video game! And third, see second.

Games that have long kill times feel very clunky and awkward with sprint because unlike in a game like COD where people die pretty much instantly you’re going to be dropping out of sprint for 1/2/3/4+ seconds at a time. When you’re not sprinting you feel incredibly slow.

Most people are abandoning halo for other games though because Halo used to play well and no longer does.

“ITS JUST A VIDEOGAME”

Holy -Yoinking!- -Yoink-. If there’s any “argument” that pisses me off more than that one I’ve yet to find it.

When you use that as an argument you’ve just admitted defeat. You’re basically saying that the debate itself doesn’t matter just because you can’t actually come up with any responses.

no they havent…even halo 5’s maps are small with the exception of warzone maps…probably one of the reasons halo 5 is so random…personally i would rather have stretched out maps if sprint is in the game over having sprint on maps that are way too small for the ability…you mix that with clamber and thruster pack…you got yourself a frustrating game

Both sides are going to have uniformed opinions, but from what I’ve read, it seems the majority of the anti-sprint crowd is a lot more informed about how things affect gameplay than the majority of the pro-sprint crowd.

And yet, judging from the first two comments and their like ratio, the pro-sprint crowd gets more support than the anti-sprint crowd.

Look, can we all just agree that this isn’t doing anything for anyone and call it a day? I’m sure we’ll get another one of these threads next week when someone else complains, but I think this one’s played out.

The debate doesn’t matter. Why should it? It is just a video game. This is an entertainment medium, nothing more, and like with all such media, the creators eventually take it down a path that some fans would rather not follow. Oh, sure, you can make your voice heard, but it’s essentially the same as yelling about reality tv, or because a character you liked was killed off in a movie. Entertaining, infuriating, but ultimately, it’s one of the least meaningful debates you can have.
Me? I just try to enjoy the game. I play what I want, and when I’m done, I move on. Passive? Sure, but I’ll bet my bottom dollar that I have more fun in any given game because of the recognition that it’s just a game than any try-hard that tries to make it more important than it is.

No, that’s ok. Some people don’t like to settle, so we’re gonna keep bringing attention to problems with the game.

Halo will be Halo again if all abilities were removed. Sprint and the Spartan Abilities, while fun, are not Halo because they are too forgiving. When Halo was at its prime, there were no forgiving factors to the game; no ability to sprint away and hide or thrust away from danger. If you were near death, you would be punished for whatever mistakes you made that got you into a doomed situation. Also, map design seemed to be better when there was less of an emphasis on verticality, so hopefully that would improve if 343i were to go back to the basics. Unfortunately, this will never happen, so at least what they’re doing now is fun.
