The sprint discussion thread

If you take away sprint, the maps become too big.
If you increase the base movement speed, removing sprint, most of the other variables in combat need to be adjusted, i.e. ease of perfect kills, gun range, scope in range, etc.
If you scale the maps down, removing sprint, then other spartan abilities become rather predictable due to lack of space. In addition, scaling maps would be a ridiculous undertaking.

Play proving grounds. Have you noticed that sprinting has been GREATLY reduced as people do not want to show up on the map? It changes the game fairly significantly.

The game was built for sprint. If you want to take it out, then you’ll have to create some custom maps to go along with it.

You all seem to miss the point that sprint is not the problem, Commonly is.

So I read the last few comments and now I can really understand what your trying to say. I can say that sprint does affect the gameplay. I guess I’m one of those halo fans that don’t want to look too critically into things, but I can see what you guys mean when you say it effects the gameplay. I think sprint was perfectly used in Halo Reach, but in Halo 5, sprint itself is not the problem. It’s the fact that in order to use certain abilities like slide and charge, you HAVE to use sprint. Thank Sgt x Slaphead for this point. If someone tells you to just not use sprint, then the gameplay is not fair, because if you don’t use sprint you can’t use those abilities. Now that I’m out of anger right now, I can say there is no point to add these abilities on to sprint. Sprint should not play a key function in order to win. In Halo: Reach, it was an armor ability and nothing else. You couldn’t use any crazy abilities when you used sprint. In Halo 4 it was just a mechanic and nothing else. In Halo 5, 343 say they added all these new abilities while you have to use sprint in order to use these abilities. Now I can see why people don’t want sprint in Halo anymore. It’s now being constantly being shoved in our faces. It’s like if you want to use an extra ability, you have to run faster.
> >
> > What I said in my rant post, I said that it effects nothing and it just increases your speed. But all 343 did was make the maps larger for sprint to fit in. So in reality, your not REALLY running faster than normal speed. It’s like if 343 went into Halo 3, added sprint but made the maps larger and changed nothing about those maps. When you sprint it’s just the same speed if you were normally running in the real Halo 3. Now when I think about it even more, people go back to Halo 3 to back their opinions because it was the game they had the most fun with. Thank A Blue Illusion for this point. For those people who don’t like sprint, I respect them to want the Halo formula to be just like it was 10 years ago. For me, I was stuck in between with my decision of sprint. I liked how it was in Halo Reach, but at the same time sprint isn’t necessary. I’m going to say it was not necessary. If 343 removes sprint, then they won’t have to work on balancing it all the time. Halo should be like how it was without sprint. Halo SHOULD BE like Halo.

Halo 2 feels fine. I think it’s map design is well suited for the player speed. If it’s a large map, you always have vehicles to help you move faster.

Halo 3 was the same, but the lower FOV compared to Halo 2 is what made Halo 3 feel slower. If you played El Dewrito (essentially Halo 3 for PC), and bumped the FOV up considerably, you’d get a feel for how fast Halo 3 truly was.

This just isn’t true. Speed of perfect kills isn’t affected at all by sprint. I essentially only use sprint to perform the sprint+thrust+slide+jump maneuver, so when I see an enemy I don’t have to come out of sprint at all. If that enemy wasn’t sprinting at the time of the engagement (and most of the time people aren’t) then that was an entirely sprint-less encounter, where the perfect kill that I got on that player or he got on me worked perfectly (no pun intended) fine. You are correct to say that the game was built around sprint, but none of your points to prove it were. Really the only thing that can’t be fixed by removing sprint and increasing movement speed (probably more than feels right since the maps are so stretched) are the jumps that were built for clamber, but that has nothing to do with sprint.

I’m not sure what “Commonly” exactly is, and what problem it brings.
Could you elaborate on how sprint isn’t the problem?

Not really. You can still play H5 maps perfectly fine without any abilities. All you need to do is increase base speed and jump height. Most jumps are preserved. This has been tested in customs countless times.

Halo plays just fine with and without sprint.

But it generally plays better without.

Pro player in H5. It’s a meme.

Given that they most likely are going to use Halo 5 as a base for Halo 6’s gameplay, I’d say no.

I blame the execs in charge as well as Microsoft in general. I’m sure there are plenty of common devs at 343 who love the original Halo games and would love to make one in that style, but when your boss tells you you can’t because that won’t make enough money, you can’t really refuse or you get fired and replaced with someone who will do what they say.

Yeah, sprint may be a gameplay problem, but it is FAR from the only problem Halo has right now, with microtransaction bs being one of the biggest ones.

Not really a good thing to cover a problem with more problems though lol. Obviously Halo nowadays has more problems than sprint, however this little bugger has stick its teeth in the series for a long time now.

Leave it to the fans to fix things, although the point stands that at it’s base foundation, the maps were for made for sprint in mind.

Exactly! The fact that you NEED to increase movement and jump height to compensate fir lack of sprint or other SAs proves that the maps were designed for said SAs. Furthermore, remember the “classic” playlist? You know, the one that had default Halo 5 gameplay with CE magnum on CE maps? Those maps were completely broken by players being able to sprint and clamber everywhere since they WEREN’T built for sprint and SAs.

If you like the immersion that is your opinion of course but sprint has been proven to hurt all aspects of Halos multiplayer design. It’s been explained so many times and in so much depth. Why is there still an argument?

How does sprint hurt gameplay. You will need to provide evidence and explain yourself quite well.
