People have removed sprint and upped the base movement speed to sprint speed (5% faster, actually) and believe it or not (with some other minor settings tweaks): it doesn’t break the game. In fact, quite a few people who’ve thoroughly tested it in 4v4 think it’s superior to default Halo 5.
>
> The whole point of combat is deciding when to give chase, retreat or fight, you essentially want to remove the hurdles of an ability, imo it just makes it less exciting, it’ll make multi encounters completely one sided so when i come up against more than one player my odds of survival are slashed because if i walk away they can just keep up with me while shooting, with sprint i can outmanoeuvre, separate them and come out on top.

Back in my day when you encountered more than one enemy at a time it was called bad positioning and you either had to out slay your opponents and win the 2v1 or you died and waited in the spawn screen where you thought about your bad play making decisions and hopefully learned from your mistakes.

Halo 5 can still be judged pretty slow, but most people are oblivious to the fact that sprint just makes it “feel faster” rather than it actually being faster. It still stands to reason that Halo has been losing out on sales over time which shows the new direction isn’t working very well. Halo 4 sold fast and then died. MS didn’t even bother releasing figures for 5, which is bad and the only figure they released they had to include additional inflators just for Halo 5 to touch Halo 3. I still think this can be partially attributed to lack of a balance between competitive and casual as well, but I do honestly hate sprint and find there’s no real decent argument that hasn’t been cut down a thousand times before in this thread whereas many only want sprint to stay because “they like it.” Overwatch is a prime example of a game a ton of people enjoy. It is fast paced without sprint, easy to pick up, but hard to master, and knows their audience. 343 just cannot nail down anything that will make the community mostly happy and that’s why I’m terrified for Halo Wars and Halo 6.
> > >
> > > The fall in sales began at Reach. Sprint adds a new element to the game because of knowing when to use it and how. Overwatch is a different story because of the type of game it is and skills that allow more speed and/or verticality.
> >
> > I actually brought this up yesterday. Halo 3 was the most played game in 2008 and 2009, the decline in sales and popularity didn’t begin until 2010 with the launch of Halo Reach. I loved Halo Reach, but it was not the game to base the new trilogy off. It was a misstep and 343i should have avoided it.
> >
> > There’s a lot of room to improve Halo 3, but the simple, “slow” and team based gameplay was one of the titles strong selling points to the casual and non FPS crowd. And the equal, predictable (tactical) gameplay made the it a solid competitive title. Rather than the more random, less predictable, more frantic nature of modern FPS games that is actually off putting to both the casual and competitive communities.
> >
> > Halo Reach, H4 and H5 add far more complexity and randomness to the games, I’d argue that each title actually adds in more and more as it goes along, and you can clearly see the titles suffering as a result. For me the argument between which is better, “classic or modern” is a no brainer. Classic was far better for the series. The only question left is whether or not the damage done by Halo Reach, H4, H5 and 343i can be reversed without things getting worse before they get better.
>
> I don’t think classic would farewell now days, bring a halo out without sprint, clamber and all that and alot of people would be bored very quickly, sure the harcore fanbase / competitive side would be happy but there simply isn’t enough of you to make enough money to keep the franchise going. ive played many custom games in halo 5 and i haven’t seen a single one without sprint, if it where that much of an issue someone would of made a popular game without it.
> i personally think halo 5 has found the sweet spot with movement and abilities not too much not too little.

This thread isn’t about removing all abilities, it’s about removing sprint, most people are fine with clamber, thruster, ground pound, and stabilize. Thruster without sprint would bring it from a mechanic for running away to a kind of boost strafe that can only really be used once in a fight.

Actually Microsoft has claimed that Halo 5 is the most profitable Halo. Essentially using preorder bundles and exclusives, they inflated the numbers wildly. Halo 5 is, though, the poorest selling core game at 5 million+ copies.

Well that’s not true. I, and many others hate clamber, thruster, ground pound and stabilize. Clamber takes the skill out of movement and jumps that would previously reuire map knowledge and skill. Ground pound isn’t terrible, but in an attempt to balance it, 343 made it not hit a wide enough area with splash damage and keep you up high for a long time. There’s a reason why there’s a mini game for sniping ground-pounding spartans out of the air. Everyone hates spartan charge (and it would have to go if sprint goes (at least in the current iteration). Stabalizer prevents movement, makes you a target, and is a pain in the -Yoink-, because sometimes you don’t want to just sit there and and float to be a giant target. To me, and many others, it’s more of a hindrance. Thruster wouldn’t be needed without sprint. The increased bullet magnetism is to help aim at sprinting enemies. To balance this, they removed aim assist. So now you have insane bullet magnetism and very fast ttk to balance sprint. Thruster needed to be added in order to counter the bullet magnetism and fast ttk that’s necessary because of sprint.

Halo 5 may be well balanced, but the insane amount of balancing is unnecessary in comparison to what’s needed for gameplay without these abilities.

Neither did I? I said money wise it’s sold more than h3. I’m going by profit, not copies. H3s copies are safe by a long shot.

…Sprint’s not even bad.

Can’t believe people are still fighting over a feature that was introduced back in like, 2012/13…Lol

I don’t mean to be rude but do you think you could develop an argument here?..

Anti-Sprint players have got genuinely well argued and legitimate reasons for how sprint negatively affects gameplay.

What benefit does it bring to the game exactly?

Just because it was introduced several games ago doesn’t mean it has to say… look at the overall popularity and player retention of Reach, Halo 4 and Halo 5 compared to the original games…

It was introduced in 2010 in Reach. And why shouldn’t we dislike sprint? It negatively affects gameplay on a variety of levels, and isn’t what we want from a franchise we spent years playing and enjoying. If we don’t discuss and point out the flaws in sprint in Halo, then how would 343 know what at least part of a community wants? Besides that, dual wielding was in the game from 2004-2008. Yet that was removed. Playable elites were in 2004-2011, they were removed. Armor abilities were there 2010-2014, but were removed. The time sprint has been a mechanic does not necessitate that it will be in the franchise until it dies. Especially with people asking for a sprintless spinoff.

Offers no arguement but it’s good lol, especially for a franchise losing in every category by MILLIONS I might add.

cant take. You seriously till you can at least give reasons why it’s not bad. I could simply say its bad and regurgitate what you just said with a few word changes you know.

Yea I can’t believe people are also upset with their perception that the new developer has torpedoed the franchise. It’s been like 3-4 years. Get over it right? /s

Give me a break. Contribute something meaningful to the discussion next time.

This whole thing is just completely dependant on what experiences everyone has had in multiplayer gameplay on halo I myself missed most of the original games multiplayer aspects as I didnt get an xbox until 2011(I had other consoles beforehand) although I can still appreciate the novelty of the so called ‘classic’ halo gameplay but I have also grown to enjoy increased mobility in games as well there are aspects of both that are redeeming and on the other hand there are some things about both that are major downsides but sadly for the old gen halo players and whatever else they like to call themselves they are now more of a minority in the halo community as most players are casual and don’t like to be extremely competitive they just play for enjoyment and what they are used to is the more modern way of playing fps games which is with increased mobility as I mentioned above I am technically ‘new’ to halo even though I’ve been playing it for 6 years as I started on the newer games I went from reach - 3 - 4 - CE - wars - ODST then to 2 and when it came out 5 so I was all over he place but I was able to experience all of the different games and their gameplay all of which were great in their own way until we got to 5 of course but they all benefitted from their gameplay and it fit in with each game in my opinion so I can understand why hardcore halo fans are pissed off with the advanced movement but it doesn’t really matter wether they like it or not as its there for the ones who are new to the franchise and maybe even new to gaming who are used to advanced movement and theres nothing that can be done about it other than just accepting it as its very unlikely to change anytime soon

What I got from your post- screw the old playerbase just to attract new people.

thats the issue at hand, you can’t just force out something that was there before, it’s why halos sales have dropped by millions and the newer players aren’t coming in faster than the people leaving.

“sadly for the old gen halo players and whatever else they like to call themselves they are now more of a minority in the halo community as most players are casual and don’t like to be extremely competitive they just play for enjoyment” what are you implying? That the old fanbase wasn’t a casual group playing for simple enjoyment? This literally has no point to it lol.

ill end it here, you’re right this crap may continue on, but people have shown they won’t accept it, hence the sales dropping by millions each game they put it, and if they keep going eventually they’ll have so little left why continue the franchise?

Ps: playing the older games now really doesn’t give them justice, you had to be there during their golden days to really experience what the franchise was at the time. Doesn’t help that 343 broke their promise to fix mcc too, let alone have the gall to even think on releasing a game in a state like that.

What new fans? New gamers will just play the popular games like CoD or Battlefield.

keep or get rid, dont try to incorporate both.

eVo OryxHalo 3, the Classic Halo we believe to be the biggest out of the Classic games and the entire franchise, was incredibly casual. In fact part of that popularity came out of the game’s ability to attract and keep the attention of players who had never picked up (or got in to) an FPS game before, let alone an online MP FPS title. Half my friends on Halo 3 didn’t play other FPS games.

Halo 3 tapped in to a social phenomenon. Gamers and Halo 2 fans bought Halo 3. Their partners, families, and friends (as often happens with games) tried this new thing they are playing, through the excellent split screen options in the game. They would find that they enjoyed the game because of its manageable learning curve (Something I’m trying to put across in another thread, that Classic Halo = low curve/high skills gap, where as modern Halo = high curve/low gap). What that meant was that when friends and families got together and sat down to play something, Halo 3 was very high on the list of choices. Because it was a game that every body could play, and they could play together. It’s a far cry from the lack of social aspects, and off putting gameplay of Halo 5.

This is how I’m formed the opinion that classic Halo actually has a broader appeal than modern Halo.

I agree - the gameplay of older Halos was way more accessible to a casual audience. You see a guy. You charge at him and shoot him. Maybe throw a nade. It was simple.

Halo 5 is more convoluted to newer players. People are flying past you, charging & sliding, thrusting away, etc. Also, matchmaking doesn’t favor solo players at all. It’s a jarring experience.

I think that while the older Halo’s like 3 seem more accessible, they really require a good amount of time to git gud. Easy to play, hard to master. Especially when it comes to learning the ins and outs of every map. Halo 5 cut down on a lot of skill gap, because it made it equal for everyone. Now you just need to get over the initial skill gap called the god awful controls.

Also I wish I could like your last sentence 10,000 times. I only play solo, and even at Gold, I constantly ran into fireteams, which being solo, made me get destroyed. It’s extremely punishing for any ranked game, leaving me with a few other gamemodes I’m not a huge fan of and warezone. Which I hate.

Halo is no longer a Tactical shooter :frowning: It’s no longer about positioning and team work, it has now become a twitch based shooter.

"Halo was too slow"… The only reason MOST why people like clamber, Sprint and other spartan ability’s is because it’s almost impossible to play a map without… it SPRINT IS A ILLUSION.
I could go on and on about crouch jumping and the golden triangle but 343 fans will just dismiss all of our points and say “Go play MCC” I would if I could find a game without waiting 30 minutes.

Halo 5 is a good shooter but not a good HALO game.

Please don’t ban me

Spartan companies are full of positioning and teamwork. With Microphones, randoms occasionally have positioning and team work.
When there’s randoms I play with, I stick with them even when they don’t have a mic and won’t communicate with me. Sticking together helps a lot with randoms.

What…?

There’s still crouch jumping. Mess around with your controller settings if you have to.

Some agree, and some disagree. IMO, it’s a great Halo game. And I’m a Halo Veteran.

No one is going to ban you. You’ve haven’t disobeyed any of the rules.

I still can’t understand why some people support Sprint, let alone so many. Its also pretty disheartening when their arguments in favor of the mechanic always seem to boil down to one of the following:

  • “Sprint lets me get around the map faster and outmaneuver other players.” - “Sprint makes the game more strategic, since it gives players more options.” - "Its not reasonable to assume Sprint’s introduction contributed to Halo’s decline, nor is it reasonable to assume that a new Sprint-less Halo would do any better."These arguments have been contested time after time, but I feel compelled to do so again… So here goes:

  • Maps should be designed with levels of risk and exposure for getting better weapons/positions and need to account for movement speed to do so. With Sprint, either the maps will be formatted to accommodate the faster movement players are capable of (which negates the faster speed) OR players will be traversing the maps at a speed not accommodated for (which negates the risk of traversing the map). - For a game to truly be more strategic, the new tactics introduced must not be more effective with equal/less effort OR be less effective with equal/more effort. As a tactic, using Sprint takes much less effort than actually engaging in a fight and can be just as effective, if not more so. As for being able to flank opponents and such, these situations occurred plenty before Sprint’s first foray in Halo. - Correlation doesn’t always equal causation, but pro-Sprinters haven’t shown anything that actually discredits the assumption that Sprint contributed to Halo’s decline. Why not seek to prove that the decline isn’t due to the mechanic? The critical and commercial success of modern games w/o Sprint show that the wider market is at least open to playing such games.
