Is that why they’ve helped me win countless matches? Why do you think it is that maps aren’t better designed in Halo 5?

Please explain. There seems to be plenty of depth in this game, and others that have a sprint function. I’ve gotten every Halo game on release day (yeah, I’m getting old) and put countless hours into the mp of each, online and offline. In fact, I never even beat the campaigns of H2 and Reach because I just couldn’t stop playing mp. I really don’t see how sprint is an issue at all.

Yeah I’d like to see that. The maps aren’t better designed? Hell if I know what went wrong over there. Reach and H4 both had sprint and the maps were better overall. H5 maps play well they just aren’t very fun or interesting

So then it did change something. That particular something is one that I have addressed quite… a few… times. And that’s just one of the things that have been addressed throughout this thread.

Read the thread.
Solid strategies cannot be formed based upon the unknown.
Complexity doesn’t inherently increase depth.
You’re no longer punished for poor positioning, maps aren’t designed as well as they once were, etc.

Mm, I disagree. Maps haven’t had good flow since Halo 3.

I pretty sure the new spartan abilities (save -Yoinking!- spartan charge) would be GENERALLY accepted in a halo game if they werent accompanied by sprint it would feel more competitive more strategic and would also still be recognizable to the fine tuned experience we got in halo 5. Warzone and customs would be a whole other beast entirely retaining ALL the features that made halo 5 successful would keep warzone great and would also allow more options for custom games, for those people that actually wanted to play in a sprint arena type setting they could actually fire up the in game custom game lobby adjust the filter and be good to go! lets face it, sprint has NO place in competitive halo and to argue that it does would just be absurd. this would allow arena maps to continue to be designed the PROPER way and please the vets and basically everyone whos willing to give it a chance and you wouldnt lose much of your sprint loving audience at all because there would still be sprint in the game it would just take a backseat!

> To be frank, given an appropriately steep slope, this mechanic has always been in Halo (though probably not in a way the user you quoted was thinking). This is a great example of one of those situations where you don’t actually need to add a new ability to implement a mechanic. Using slopes to translate vertical momentum into horizontal (and, in fact, horizontal momentum into vertical) is a great idea. Its use is restricted to locations where there is an appropriately sloped surface around, and is therefore under complete control of the map designer. It creates paths on the map that aren’t immediately obvious to the player and require effort and ingenuity to find, and experience to learn.
>
> However, the first place to go wrong with this mechanic is to think that it should be available to the player at any moment (like sliding when it’s generally executed in shooters), and that it needs to be a separate ability. None of this is needed. In most games, surface friction disappears when the slope goes beyond a certain angle. Moreover, when falling, a collision with any slope translates vertical momentum into horizontal momentum. Using these facts, players can use natural slopes on maps (even the edges of railings are generally enough) to increase their jump distance, and by repeated jumping move faster than standard movement speed. If the map designer is aware of this, they can design maps in such a way that a player jumping from a right angle gains access to routes inaccessible by normal means. When maps are designed properly with this in mind, this simple feature of the game’s physics engine can elevate movement in the game to a whole no level without requiring the developer to specifically design any new abilities.
>
> What’s more, coupled with a horizontal boost mechanic, such as Evade in Reach, this feature of slopes can actually be used to significantly incerase the player’s potential jump height given an appropriate slope. For example, I challenge anyone to try to get to the top of the vents on Powerhouse using only Evade. In principle, any horizontal boost can be implemented in such a way that it makes this possible. This is actually why I hold Evade (and Thruster Pack to some extent) to higher regard than any of the other armor/Spartan abilities attempted over the years.
>
> Of course, all of this requires you to accept that great game design doesn’t come from designing new gameplay mechanics, but finding innovative uses for old ones, and that this is enough to evolve gameplay. But I’m afraid that this is a philosophy that’s too difficult for many people to accept.
I just wanted to say thank you for talking about this. I want this post to see some more air, it’s one of the best one’s that I’ve read in this thread.

I think that it’s more like: “That person shouldn’t have gotten away, they chose a bad position.”
Halo was doing just fine back in the day. Counter Strike is still doing pretty well. Reach was a spin-off.

Who wanted sprint to be in the game? Thats right no one. Hell even after Halo 4, a majority of players from the three largest halo communities did not want sprint in Halo 5 and of course, 343 gives some bs excuse about players expecting to sprint and immersion to force it into the game.

And how has sprint helped Halo adapt to the competition? Last I checked Halo 4 became a ghost town after a single year and Halo 5 sits at 15th on the xbox most popular playlist. They really did a great job of helping Halo keep up with the competition with sprint didn’t they?

I enjoy the addition of sprint. I feel it’s helped the gameplay keep up with today’s other shooters, and provided interesting new combat interactions between players. I also enjoy the addition of most of the spartan abilities (I don’t really like Spartan Charge, but that’s just my opinion.) I personally think people complaining about sprint is a silly subject, we could be discussing much more important, or interesting subjects as apposed to the addition of sprint in Halo.
