The sprint discussion thread

Okay so most anti sprint people want to up base movement speed anyway, making sprint redundant. What’s your point now? Saying I should be able to sprint because they’re Spartans is an asinine reason. I don’t care if you can run in real life nor do I care how you run. I care about how the game plays though and, in my opinion, sprint makes it a lesser game.

It’s definitely different. Not having crap like sprint is inherently better for anything resembling an Arena shooter. That’s assuming I actually got what you were trying to say, because 75% of your sentences make no coherent sense.

So they made maps big enough so sprinting is the same as walking from point a to b. I don’t if this would make sense but am doing my best how explain it.
> > >
> > >
> > > Yes. And this is why sprint does not make the game faster. I’m not sure what your point is. In order to move the equivalent distances in the same time on the stretched out remake of the bigger map, you have to put down your weapon and sprint. In Halo 2 you could move at maximum speed and still fight at all times. The result of this in H5 is that all the times that you’re moving at standard, non-sprint speed (i.e. in combat or expecting combat) you are moving slower relative to the size of the map. So, the net difference is a slower game. Of course, now we have nonsense like slide thrusts to further increase the difference between standard movement and “mobility options,” so the disparity is worse. And you can only move at optimal speeds while facing forward, much like you can only perform many jumps while facing forward, again slowing down the game. And that’s not even covering all of the ways that 343 has encouraged crouching walking around to stay off radar, which slows things down even more if you want to pull off a basic flank without your enemy knowing where you are through walls and floors.
> >
> >
> > I do agree its not that fast paced. Maps are big enough still to make the game slower and not fast. I played Lockout remake on Halo 5 with friends. The map is the same size as the original and it was fast with sprint due to being small. I say if they keep sprint they need to make the maps smaller. Not because it would easier to find people but it would make it fast pace.

But don’t you know? The new generation of halo fans love low skill gap. They love being able to hard counter precision guns by simply camping corners with ARs and SMGs. The entire relationship between precisions and autos was completely changed in Halo 5.

Constant questioning is good for any forum. Hell, it’s good for anything but it is especially good for the development of a healthy discussion forum.

HALO should devolve back too far to DOOM, Quake, and you know real arena shooters where things like the BR never existed

Totally reasonable response. Doesn’t refute any points and just tells people to adapt or play the broken MCC. Thanks guy for contributing so much /sarcasm.

If you actually read any of my posts you’d know I want a bigger base speed increase and tweaks to movement acceleration to promote strafing and improve dueling skillgap, or at the very least go back to ballistic precision guns a la Halo 3, but please continue to place words in my mouth.

So increase base movement speed. Sprint is bow redundant as you can get everywhere faster and stop designing the maps around sprint. As it stands sprint is a necessity to get anywhere fast because they stretched the maps to accommodate it so it’s get sniped in the open running slow or deal with being at a disadvantage if you run into anyone because of the delay before firing animation. Sprint hurts more than it helps and there are simpler ways to accomplish the same goals as sprint.

Except Josh Holmes said they debated a lot on whether or not to include sprint in Halo 5 so clearly they understand it’s divisive and isn’t everybody’s favorite thing, especially since they radically changed it from Halo 4.

Right… so what’s it’s purpose again? Apparently it’s suicide “most of the time”, so why is a mechanic that will supposedly almost always get you killed in the game?

Do you not have an answer? Because it sounds like you’re trying to divert attention away from the question.

Seriously…You’re just listing off the disadvantages/nerfs of sprint that discourages players from using the mechanic overall. Why not increase the base movement speed like Doom to not only increase the pace of the game, but eliminate the defensive properties of sprint? You can afford to chase an opponent now that you move at the same speed as he does, and you don’t have to put your gun down to try catching up to him.

With an increased base movement speed, players now have a greater opportunity to actually outplay their opponents by creating difficult strafes that can be tough to keep up, increasing the skill gap in individual gunfights. You also increase the ability for players to pull off skill jumps from multiple directions without having to face forward on their screen to properly execute the jump. Players with strong map awareness can be awarded for being at an advantageous position than their opponents at a quicker time. I never really supported how slow Spartans moved in their base speed within the trilogy, which is why a speed like doom would be so beneficial in providing skillful and entertaining game play in halo.

I agree with you 100%, but in a thread of 2000+ replies, everything that can and could be said has already been said. At this point it’s unnecessarily extending this long dead post

I am questioning why he’s constantly doing, but considering since you’re also an offender of this, why do you do it as well, especially since in the last 20+ page the only argument you have made is “up base movement” which is a horrible thing to do with Halo 5’s arsenal.

Which 40% is you doing nonconstructive posts like this. This post dies out every week, but after 4 days someone posts in it and it is totally revived.

I know you really haven’t play that much of this game and aren’t particularly good, but seriously, dude, pay some attention. I have never seen more getting out of fights for free in any other Halo game. Bear in mind that I am primarily referring to PRECISION fights, because the the way this game is balanced makes close-quarters spray fests the most consistent way to end encounters. The bold text has never been less true in any Halo game.

Yes, they nerfed sprint. But use your brain for a bit, skip. What else did they do? They added, thrust, an ability that allows you to move instantly (faster than sprint) in any direction horizontally. It also allows for a quick speed boost if you’re trying not to sprint to get your shields back. They added slide, which allows you to make yourself a smaller target while maintaining sprint speed. You can also thrust into a slide for even more speed. You can use ground pound to hover in the air behind cover you wouldn’t normal be able to use. They added vastly more map clutter and easy escape routes. They made “skill” jump routes easier with clamber. Motion tracker enabled in competitive play allows you to see exactly where your pursuer is and do annoying nonsense like playing cat and mouse behind cover when you’re one shot.

Are you honestly saying that, in your experience, people don’t just thrust behind cover at medium to long range and run away if they think they’re going to lose fight? Are we even playing the same game? Sprint is hardly the only mechanic that promotes passive play and makes it easier to run away. And it’s still a pointless mechanic in this game.

We’re talking about Halo 6. If you have an answer to his question though, then by all means tell us, because not many others seem to have an answer.

Your posts with fake statistics are only helping that 40%. But now you’re saying it’s averaging 387 posts every day people post in it. Sounds like a heated discussion to me.

People are still uneducated on this topic so obviously not enough has been said.

We’d have to wait for the next halo game for sprint to go.

Can’t educate those who don’t care to begin with, and then there are many who full well know the effects but don’t care, and then there are some who just don’t agree with it being an issue.

Have never seen this. Not once. I’ve never seen someone who fully understands the effects of sprint who is in favor of sprint.

Legit? Or would you then say that person “really” doesn’t understand the effects of sprint if he still supports it? I only ask cuz there are those people, but they’re then just brushed off as clueless uneducated people simply cuz they still support it. That seems to be how people wanna go. I’m talking about the people who have posted paragraphs of explanation as well, not your typical “we’re Spartans” or “its modern” replies.

I’m personally under no delusion that most of the people on Waypoint will ever been convinced, but I think it is worthwhile to continue for a couple of reasons.

  1. We need to continue to make it clear that we are not satisfied with the direction of this series and for what specific reasons. Silence might as well be support, which is what the 343 apologists that don’t like that 343’s bad design continues to be critiques would prefer. 343 does not need more reasons to continue down the misguided path that has led to Halo’s ever-approaching irrelevancy and current cultural stigma. It’s about as respected as Call of Duty at this point (i.e. not respected at all), with no where near the success.
  2. Anyone who is convinced and understands the arguments being made represents a victory and a step in the right direction.
  3. Just because someone doesn’t care presently doesn’t mean that the negative impacts of these design choices have no relevance to their experience with the game.
  4. Some people are too stupid to educate anyway.

just my opinion but they should atleast make a playlist without sprint.
