The Sounds Since 4 Have Been Trash

Ever since Halo 4 the sound design of Halo has been absolutely garbage. Seriously. 343 needs to scrap all of the sounds for the weapons, especially the Covenant weapons. The sounds are all just generic schlock that if you put it in a generic sci-fi movie and didn’t tell me it came from Halo I would believe you. Compared to the iconic sounds from Halo 1, 2, 3, and Reach I would be able to say ‘Hey this is pretty good’. Halo 2 Anniversary did sound design better than 343 did with 4 5 and Infinite.

I disagree, 343i have made some very glaring errors when handling the Halo series but I feel like sound design has only gotten better since they took over, human weapons feel more jolted up & impactful, alien weapons such as the plasma pistol and carbine actually sound alien, moving around and causing a ruckus as a Spartan feels heavy hitting because the sound compliments what is happening.

Except they don’t sound like HALO weapons. They sound so generic and stupid. This is disrespectful to Halo’s legacy to have these stupid, generic sounds.

The sounds have been hit or miss for me. I thought Halo 5, which I love (MM), sounded a little pingy/muffled/non-realistic. The sounds grew on me a little, but I feel they missed the mark compared to the classic games.

Hoping this game sounds a bit more realistic, and less stuck in a box with pong balls pinging around.

Having followed the 343i sound team on Instagram on saturdays, looking at the dedication they have put into recording
and comparing it to stuff we saw or better heard in todays demo I’m actually looking forward to the final game.

Thats all well and good but they’ve strayed from the path that makes Halo, Halo. None of the Covenant sounds sound like Covenant sounds anymore. They sound like generic schlock.

I don’t know if I would use such a strong word but I agree I feel like the quality has gone down. Halo 4 sounded super compressed and out of sync on the 360 and honestly, some weapons in 5 sound great (like the shotgun) but most are just lackluster (like the pistol).

I loved halo 4’s audio design, it’s by far my favorite. It was the most immersive in any game I played, you really feel like a spartan when walking around or meleeing, the weapons feel powerful and real, the intimidating explosions, the environments, the enemies (except grunt voices) were pure gold. I admit some weapons like the sword, sniper, magnum or turrets could sound more familiar, and the MP designs like reaching a waypoint, carrying the flag, not being able to score with it or teleporters should be the ones that appeared in every game. Halo 5 though… everything sounds literally like a toy. I hope Infinite is using the H5 sounds as placeholders.

None of the weapons sound familiar in 4. They all sound just boring and generic.
