One of the problems with ADS or Smart Scope is that it exists in many weapons where there is not much use for its existence. I’m talking mostly about automatic weapons like the AR, the Needdler or the Plasma Rifle.
They justify their use by giving you a small increase in shooting range and sometimes not even that, just by zooming in a little, and in my opinion, it is something totally unnecessary on weapons that don’t have a telescopic sight.
However, I think this could be solved by giving these weapons an alternative use, a second shooting mode or function linked to the button now used to aim.
Imagine taking the Needler from the ground, pressing the zoom button, but to your surprise, it’s an alternative shooting mode where all the stings are released very quickly and without locking onto the enemy, ideal for close combat.
We could say that the Pistol Plasma has two modes of shooting, one by holding the trigger to load the weapon and an automatic mode by pressing it repeatedly. What if instead of aiming with a redundant zoom like in Halo 5, another type of shot was activated? Perhaps a slower but more devastating loading system between shots, or something that drains the entire energy from the gun but is very destructive if it hits the target.
You could even include aspects of Halo 3 equipment such as the Trip Mine or the Blinding Grenade and include them somehow integrated into a weapon.
It’s just one example of how you can take advantage of this “separation” that the Smart Scope has created between players. Games like Half Life and Unreal Tournament made perfect use of weapons with two fire modes.
What do you think about this solution? I would love to read your opinions on how to fix the Smart Scope debate

Or simply throw the smart scope away cuz Halo is better without it.
And Spartans kind of don’t need it because MJOLNIR helmet is a lot of help already, giving many helpful informations to the users, so logically, while wearing one, Spartans would have an aim assist (not a true aim assist, more like a story aim assist and not gameplay one) that show them where they are pointing their guns.
This sounds like DOOM and would not work well with Halo. ADS was not a great addition, but neither was it a game-breaking feature. I’d prefer to have it be like the H4 days and before since zooming with an AR feels a bit out of place in Halo. However, if ADS returns, it would not be the worst thing.
No debate required go back to og zoom, it was practical and worked well
I honestly don’t understand how the new aiming system introduced in Halo 5 is BETTER than what was in the original Halo games.
I understand that it’s a more contemporary system in line with other modern shooters…but is it actually BETTER from a gameplay perspective?
I’ll go against the grain and say the idea of certain weapons having an alt-fire would probably make the game better. As everyone is saying, most weapons don’t need a scope of any sort. Precision weapons can keep them, and the rest don’t use them. But then, that button would have zero use for a huge amount of weapons in the game–it makes no sense to have such an important button mapped to nothing. Introducing unique LT/Left-Click functions would help to differentiate and add more depth to each weapon that has it.
Halo fans are quick to shoot down new ideas–with 343, it’s understandable. But the devil’s in the details; if a mechanic as unbalanced as dual-wielding can be as beloved as it is, alternate weapon functions shouldn’t be shot down so quickly.
They’d have to balance it carefully, sure. But in a vacuum, the idea’s good, and people who say otherwise are flat-out wrong.
Not every weapon needs a secondary function mapped to the zoom button just like every weapon doesn’t need a scope. Setting aside the aesthetic issue, the big problem I had with smart scope is that it was universally applied which contributed to making many weapons feel samey.
I’m all for trying out secondary functions mapped to the zoom button for certain weapons, but I would rather not have strict mandates that all weapons must have X additional functionality.

I liked the graphics myself, things like the COG Scope were super cool. On the mechanic side though I’m positive to indifferent on some of its applications, mixed’ish on automatics having it, buuuuut I feel it absolutely shouldn’t be on melee weapons. It’s like… Eeesh.
How about we just don’t have ADS style zooming look at all!! It’s a terrible system and it looks brutal!!! Even worst, to justify putting it in, 343I made it canon with this extremely laughable reason… “The Spartan creates a holographic projection of the weapon on there hud” …really…REALLY?? The point of zooming in is to see your target BETTER! Not cover it up like the majority of weapons do in Halo 5. The pistol for example, is godly awful!!! 3/4 of the target is covered! If I were a Spartan going into battle, why would I want this on my hud??? LoL makes absolutely no sense. We all know why 343I put it in… Let’s be honest here.
Just take the old style and update that look instead. Also, melee weapons should NOT have a zoom function or if they do, it shouldn’t increase the range.
I definitely agree that not every weapon should have a zoom. Automatics in particular shouldn’t.
As far as guns having a second function, I’m ok with some having it, like the plasma pistol always has, but I agree with what WerepyreND with,
> I would rather not have strict mandates that all weapons must have X additional functionality
I couldn’t of said it better!
I really hope 343I wises up and gets rid of ADS style zooming all together in Infinite.
Personally I don’t really want secondary firing weapons in Halo. I’d rather they keep most weapons with a single firing method and just take out zoom with close range/auto weapons.

I think you nailed it sir. Totally agree.
