The Significance of Heian

If anyone remembers watching the Halo Legends episode The Babysitter, you would probably recall a strange, obscure planet named Heian which the ODSTs and Cal-141 were forced to raid in order to assassinate a Prophet. Fans nearly -Yoink- a brick when they saw the Forerunner architecture, in what was deemed one of the least faithful uses of artistic license ever.

Except it wasn’t Foreunner. Frankie debunked these claims after the episode was aired on Waypoint, and stated it was belong to something that they would explore later. We can now assume that this architecture probably belonged to the prehistoric civilization of humans seen in Greg Bear’s Forerunner Trilogy and Halo 4.

There’s obvious influences from modern human culture – most notably Japanese (duh). The prehistoric human’s colonies weren’t described like this and Charum Hakkor did not have any of these structures on it. But when you think about it, Charum Hakkor was mainly composed of Precursor technology.

So do you think this is what the ancient civilization’s colonies appeared like? Also, what likelihood do you think Heian, or perhaps other ancient human colonies, have that they’ll return in future Halo games and media? I’d love to delve into these worlds in greater detail. Assuming that Heian is actually Forerunner; it’s never been outright stated, I believe.

Yeah, it’s implied to be ancient human. I hope their artifacts play some role in the current era universe.

Frankie basically all but confirmed it wasn’t Forerunner. “Who said it was Forerunner?” he said. Which leaves Ancient Humanity.

I wonder if they will try and tie up this loose end.

There was some faces and stuff that reminded me of cultures other than Japanese, even if the main structures clearly were.

Its not impossible ancient humanity had different cultures too.

The place’s lack of technology is possibly why the forerunners ignored it.

They’re probably remnants of the Ancient Human Dark Age. After leaving Earth and exploring the Galaxy, they suffered a technological Dark Age and had to rebuild themselves again. Afterwards they were no longer sure which one of those planets was their true cradle world. They eventually settled on Earth but Forthencho believed other planets were more likely because he had seen Human ruins on them. Heian could be one of those worlds Forthencho mentioned.

Didn’t the Forerunners destroy any sign of the Old Humanity though? How could the ruins of Heian still exist?

Also Forthencho listed off a few planets that Humans could have originated on with Earth being one of them, not that the others are more likely only that Earth was among a list of possibles. Also given the fossil record and evolutionary bread crumbs its probably safe to assume it was Earth after all.

Maybe they simply missed some? Or they didn’t care because they were just old ruins and didn’t have any sophisticated technology. Forthencho also mentioned that Forerunner had visited those ruins because they were curious about Human origins. Perhaps they didn’t wish to destroy them because they were to be studied when they had the time.

“I had severe doubts that Erda was our planet of origin. Other worlds in other systems seemed more likely. I had been to many of them and had viewed their ancient ruins.”

I’m not necessarily saying that I agree with Forthencho here, I’m just saying that he had his doubts. It also points out that Human ruins existed on worlds even in that time so they could be the same ones on Heian.

Another thing is the ruins on Heian appear to be made out of stone and located in a dense, humid jungle. There is no way a complex like that would last there for 100,000 years. It would have been eroded and rotted by nature long ago.

Not to sound funny here, but maybe the Ancient Humans had a better understanding of constructing durable buildings or the elements used to building their structures, like better quality cement or enhanced erosion resistant coating applied on the wooden frames.
We also have to remember that most of them seemed like Temples or significant places of worship so the devotion to make them last longer than normal residential bulidings might also influence it.

It’s kind of funny trying to associate each thing from each civilization to the appropriate age. Like humans, we have so many ages and even old ages has several, forerunners were in the past but there were more ages them too.
