That’s incorrect that the OG Shotty wouldn’t have a counter. The players using the OG Shotty wouldn’t have a Lunge like the Sword, therefore if you move away from it’s short Kill radius, use a distant stand off weapon to pick them off, use the Mangler for Mid range, Use the Plasma Burst overcharge plus a BR shot to the head, or use a Nade with Any weapon are PERFECT Counters to the OG Shotty.
The OG Shotty would still have most of the same counters to it that were in previous Halo games plus the new weapons like the Heatwave or Mangler.
Counters to OG Shotty:
Adding the OG Shotty wouldn’t upset weapon balance because there are SOOOO many counters to it, BUT the OG Shotty would properly counter the Sword which has very few counters. Right now the Sword is very overpowered, especially when a player has a Grappleshot with it.
The Bulldog will be HORRIBLE for Zombies because of the slow reload time, lack of ability to reload individual shells and horrible Mag size.
It’s not that the bulldog is weak, more that it serves a different purpose now.
The shotgun was really split into 3 weapons which could do different roles.
The Bulldog, which had decent range and could kill a Spartan in two shots and was moderately easy to use.
The Mangler, a weapon which was more skilled to use and could result in quick one shot melee kills consistently.
And The Heatwave, which took the Scattershot and said “what if we could control the bounce a little more?”
Through all of these changes, 343i forgot about the Shotgun vs Sword element.
The sword has no real counters since the 3 shotgun spinoffs (Heatwave, Mangler and Bulldog) can’t stop the sword lunge.
The gravity hammer does somewhat counter it, but it’s unlikely to have that interaction.
The only counter is the repulsor, but it’s not a weapon so it’s questionable if it even counts.
This is actually a very good point.
I somewhat disagree with that.
Zombies don’t have shields, so the Bulldog would technically one-shot.
Also, the Bulldog has 7 shots before it needs to reload. That’s 1 more than H:3’s, H: Reach’s and H:4’s shotgun, and 2 more than H:5’s shotgun.
But I will admit that the reload animation for the original shotgun allows you to reload a single shot quicker than reloading the bulldog, and leaves you less vulnerable.
At least we’d have extra range with the shotgun this time, and could more clearly see where our shots are landing, AND also be able to fire faster if needed.
Most players take 3 shots to get a kill with the Bulldog, not 2 shots because it is difficult to gauge how far damage distances are because of the lack of Red Reticle.
If I remember correctly, the OG Shotty had a red Reticle that lets you know when your target was in range to allow you to properly time your shots.
That’s another problem with the Bulldog is the lack of the Red Reticle Range Indicator.
The Bulldog has multiple ranges at which it is effective which makes timing your engagement for a two shot kill quite difficult because you don’t have anything to determine where the Two Shot Kill range turns into a Three Shot Kill Range by except rough guestimation.
On the other Hand, the OG Shotty had an exact point where you knew that your trigger pull would either be a One Shot Kill or not.
This makes the OG Shotty far more predictable than the Bulldog.
It counts. But so do long sightlanes. If you know the sword is in play, it’s your -Yoink!- if you get cornered tbh.
I think it will be horrible for zombies either way. Either too effective or to ineffective, and somehow, I suspect it will be both.
Also that Mangler to melee combo is REALLY fast. In fact, fast enough that you may be able to kill an unprepared shotgun user before they can even pull the trigger.
It can’t have that interaction out side of Fiesta & BTB because of the rotating weapon pads. That is, a sword and a hammer can’t be on the same map at once and thus can’t clash.
BTB often has both weapons existing at once. But then Desync be like “haha no”
