The Shadow of Intent

I was thinking earlier today about Halo 3,specifically the cutscene during the level “The Covenant”. When the Flood show up and make a mess of everything, the Elites carrier is hit by a large chunk of biomass(?) and the Chief is left to handle Truth on his own.
Later at the end level of Halo 3 both the Elites and Humans depart from The Ark on a seemingly undamaged carrier.
Any ideas on how they bounced back so quickly from that ordeal?

It probably didn’t hit anything vital. From the scene it looks as if it went through the Hangar deck, which is just a big open room. The Solemn Penance from Halo 2 also had a hole cutting through its hangar deck, (Chief enters through the top and exits through the bottom), and it was still space worthy. Until Chief gave them back their bomb of course lol.

But when the scene switched back to gameplay; the Shipmaster mentioned that “Weapon systems were disabled”. Sounds pretty vital to me. Unless they used that modular dispersal tech, but then maybe I`m over exaggerating how much damage the ship actually took.

And I quote the bomb’s words “Hi everybody, I’m home!” Boom!

Maybe it hit a plasma conduit vital for the plasma cannons. Doesn’t mean the ship can’t fly.

Keep in mind the Elites still had their Engineers at that point.

Actually, Chief went in from one hole and back out the same hole. The Longswords only breached the hull on one side. The camera angle makes it look like it was a through and through for Chief, even though he kicked off (something that should have been impossible because of no real way to slow his momentum) and went back out from the same way he got in.

I laughed far more than I should have.

He couldn’t have gone out the same hole. When he activates the Bomb you can see the hole he entered and there are Stars visible. Then he moves around the Bomb and when he is about to push off you can see the Earth. As the ship explodes and he is seen flying away, he is flying away from the bottom of the ship. See here.

I suppose it’s also possible he actually turned and flew out the opening where fighters launch from. As for being able to pushing away, I believe he used his thruster pack on his back. People still argue he doesn’t have them, and question where they “magically” came from in Halo 4, but I still believe he always had them and used them in this scene. A Halo 2 Anniversary could actually show this if they wanted to.

Modular dispersal technology; Covenant ships can still function under significant losses in ship mass. In the first space battle against the Covenant over Chi Ceti, there was a Covenant frigate that got run right through by a MAC round, however it quickly recovered and then came back to pound the UNSC Commonwealth some more. That was a Jackal Frigate; I’d imagine that a Sangheili Assault Carrier is even more durable. Plus this was written pre-Kilo 5, so the impression was that the Sangheili still had some technological capabilities (As well as Huragok) to deal with the damage.

Wow… I had just played through Halo 2 last week and only now caught that. Now the issue that I see is that I do not know how a second breach was made in that ship just from a single Longsword bombing run. That opening doesnt look much like it came from something that exploded, the shape doesnt seem right for that or any other sort of damage for that matter caused by ballistic weaponry. Not that it matters cause the convenient exit is still there to be a convenient exit.

As for Chief’s armor changing. Thats all 343 just changing the overall design for Chief’s armor for the sake of changing it to suit their needs. Though I am in the camp that the boosters were not there before. Halo 2 makes it look like that the suits power packs were in the same place as the boosters ended up.
