The scorpion tank refinement

I have some thoughts regarding the Scorpion tank, that could either be applied to the Scorpion Tank itself, or as a New side Class of Scorpion Tank.

Now, whenever I see The Scorpion Tank in comparison to Historical and Fictional Main battle tanks, It feels limited and a bit unrealistic in it’s design. A vehicle of that size with just one Operator and a horribly exposed Gunner just doesn’t feel like a tank to me.

Tanks are Infantry Support vehicles in their entirety. So why not Alter or Make an entirely new class of Scorpion tank to reference that detail. A tank in Match Making that is built to support Infantry, rather than the purpose of Racking up kills.

A Larger Scorpion tank, Built in line with real Tanks. So it would have far more bulk to it’s frame, containing the Operators within under a hatch. Now obviously the Classical Scorpion design couldn’t take up a Hatch inside of the Main gun for it’s position. With more mass, there could be the option to make the turret larger and adding some metal bars and a hatch on the top.

The Hatch could detach from a few Melee’s or damage from someone getting close enough to get ontop of the vehicle. Allowing say, a Frag grenade or Plasma to be thrown down to kill the entire crew and possibly leave a salvageable Tank on the field.

I’d be for the inclusion of seats on the treads, so Infantry could hitch a ride; very much like what was present in Combat Evolved. Infantry can’t keep up with a Tank on foot, so that option would keep it relevant as an Infantry Support tank. I’ve found that problem in CTF currently on Reach. Where all there is available to get you out is a Scorpion tank and hitching a ride at full speed is an issue.

Those are the design and gameplay thoughts i have at the moment. Overall, i’m in visioning a Tank that would reward Team play. Even if it has to have it’s own medals for say, Transporting a flag carrier and dropping them off for a successful cap. Lots of people go lone wolf in gametypes like BTB, so A alternate version of the scorpion could be ideal to encourage more team play.

There could perhaps even be a capacity for it to shoot of smoke as a secondary ability. I know during Ww2 there were Shermans equipped with Smoke Grenades, so that could be an option for more team play. Most of the Vehicles have some form a secondary, Banshee has the roll and boost, Ghost has boost, Warith Boost, Revenant boost; So why not give a new Scorpion type A secondary that encourages team play.

it’s more of a future thing, with the one operator and terrible gunner placement; you can do more, with less

you should see the Halo 2 version (my favorite) the machine gun was controlled by the pilot

but what you say about an infantry support tank, is a good idea
a fast, armored tank that can transport infantry

but most of the nubs that play halo are immature 5 year-olds,
they don’t realize the importance, and value of teamwork, regardless of weather it’s rewarding or not

i’d like this idea, as i love anything that can be drivin…

but all UNSC vehicles have an animal name…what would this one be called?

Isn’t supplying infantry the job of the Elephant as opposed to a tank used for heavy assault?

> Isn’t supplying infantry the job of the Elephant as opposed to a tank used for heavy assault?

The elephant’s primary job is to serve as a mobile outpost for the UNSC, one of it’s secondary purposes is to support infantry movements,

but think about it, the thing goes 4.4 MPH, it can’t support infantry very well

tanks on the other hand…

I’m finding a name hard to choose. The vehicles were generally nicknamed based on their appearence, so i find that to be a difficult choice.

And yeah, I recall the Halo 2 Scorpion tank. The loss of the Coaxial made it much harder to assist team mates since Halo 3. Now it requires careful pinpoint aim and knowledge of the blast radius, Or taking out things ahead.

Like what Twizzsted was saying about the Elephant, It appeared in Halo Wars as a mobile outpost type of vehicle. It was shown with more armor(a roof, yay) an additional turret and a purpose to the struts on the treads. But it’s just too slow to serve on the front unless it is stopped dead in it’s tracks to hold the line in a sense. It’s really just a Mobile base.

I had some thoughts that leaned more towards a Bradly/APC analog, Such as passenger room inside.

the scorpion needs to be faster. its too easy for someone to just walk up beside you, and destroy the tank with a couple pummels and a grenade.

on the other hand, its almost impossible to board a wraith if the driver knows what he’s doing.

Haha so true lol. No1 can board me when I’m in a wraith. Control the boost and you are invincible. Blast radius is supreme. But I really like how they balance both heavy vehicles. Tank has quicker land time in shots, but slower and easier to board. Wraith has quicker speed, but slower time in landing shots, much slower time. It is difficult to board it. It’s nicely balanced.

Sounds more like you are asking for an APC instead of an alternate Scorpion. Possibly like an armored up version of the transport Warthog but with a light machine gun on it or something, maybe even have the driver able to control the gun like the Scorpion. It could be called a Wolverine, or a Honey Badger maybe?

I agree with some things brought up about the Scorpion. I would like for the machine gun to be attached to the turret again. Even if it’s as inaccurate as the CE Scorpion’s machine gun, it still would be a useful deterrent while the cannon reloaded. The machine gun turret could still be there so players can assist the driver, but I feel the turret should get a machine gun either way. Giving teammates the option to be able to ride on the tank would be good too. If they don’t, teammates would just jump on the main body again and most likely block the cannon from freely firing.

I also agree about the smoke for a secondary ability. If the Scorpion is at a disadvantage it can deploy a large, thick smoke cloud, able to confuse enemies and hide itself while it retreats or gets into a more favorable position. A Scorpion could also lead a charge against an enemy and deploy the smoke, creating a useful cover for teammates to advance.

I think we need a bunch of different kinds of tanks. I like your infantry-support tank idea. I then think we should have a " heavy " tank and a " Medium" tank. The medium tank would be the one we have had for the last five Halo games. The heavy would be super slow but have : Two passenger heavy turrets, heavy armor, and a huge tank gun with a bigger explosion radius ( slower reload ).

Teammates trying to ride on the tank can be such a serious problem nowadays. It can occasionally be genuinely hard to tell if a Teammate is trying to hitch a ride or betrayal suicide because they didn’t get to the tank first. I’ve actually opted to ride on the treads of the Tank, crouched so i don’t take up much room if they need to turn. It doesn’t seem to impede them too much, but on occasion you slip off and get left behind.

A little of the topic, but not: I rode on the wing of my friend’s wraith once, on the right. It’s almost perfectly shaped as a platform. Oh the bewildered shooting that came in when they realized ‘hey is that a…*shot’ I was just playing Wraith defense. Luckily the boost saw me get left behind, rather than breaking me in half.

They could definately alter the shape of the Tank armor on the treads. So the teammates hitching a ride, aren’t in the way of the Turret or the Support gunner.

A heavy tank in halo would be hard to work out in my opinion. We dont’ want anything too powerful, presuming they don’t boost the player amount. If they do boost the player count, A heavy tank could fit right in with heavy soldier requirements.

Oh! There could be a proximity tone added in the event a teammate is close to the vehicle. That way if you are caught up in combat as some Tanks and wraiths are; They would know when say…A Flag Carrier is hiding behind their wraith and frantically backpeddling(yes, i was in that situation. I may have been panicing a little). Only a tone for teammates close by, obviously something to make a single alert tone when they come close to the back end.

I’m sure they could be more possible counter measure secondaries. Like say, the inclusion of Canister shot that was feature on Scorpion tanks in Halo Wars. Atleast with what i have thought of, Smoke deployment is the best option towards team play.
