Okay, to all of you who don’t want pelicans because you think they will affect the multiplayer, they won’t. Why? Because there ARE other aircraft such as the banshee and falcon meaning they won’t be there.
Pelicans, We as a community have seen these beautiful beasts since halo 1, they have been the primary dropship of the UNSC since +10 years ago.
Ways we have had to pilot/use them:
Mods, effective and usually only single player. Not as much fun as multiplayer.
Halo CE (custom edition - PC) Big fun, featured in MANY maps, a couple of the popular ones are Coldsnap, Extinction and Hugeass.
Halo: Reach, nowhere as fun as the CE or Halo:2 pelicans. Slow, Un weaponised (aside from terrible camera for Gunner/Co-Pilot) Fully closed cargo bay. Unlandable and landing gear were un-deployable.
A few reasons I believe they would be good for putting into Halo 4
FUN, a big reason most of us will play/should play Halo 4
Great for machinimas and just videoclips and screenshots in general.
They would be amazing in custom games like BTB or creating Invasion type gametypes.
Because pelicans are awesome.
Out of map game starts (creating a map where fly-in is necessary
Because they are awesome…. Didn’t I say that already?
Everyone enjoys having fun vehicles in Forge
Ways they could be put in: Reach styled menu here
Un-weaponised - Transport
Chingun – Cargo bay Mounted machine gun + Front Chaingun.
Heavy Loadout (Chingun – RocketPods)
Experimental?! Gauss turret on the front.
Reasons for the weaponry,
Chaingun – as is the Hornet in Halo 3.
Heavy – Assault on Air/Ground vehicles such as a Scorpion/Wraith or Banshee/Falcon
Gauss, Seriously who doesn’t want something to fly with a gauss turret? Overpowered? Who cares , you don’t have to have it in your map.
Cons, Yes that’s right all the negative things about pelicans I can think of.
Pretty big, hard to fit into maps.
Over powering.
Good for dropping groups of people into an area of enemies.
No counter vehicle? Lets add a Phantom/Spirit or the Rocket Hog.
Pros, Didn’t I list them already?
Before everyone just plain out says no “because they are too big for maps and to over powering on everything else” Please remember this
Thank you for changing the color. I’ll give it a read now.
Edit2:
Alright I read it and I’m for it. The way I see it, the more toys in the sand box the better, so I’d toss in some Phantoms as well. Maybe not so good for MM, but great for custom games at least. I mean they’re CUSTOM games after all, so it only makes sense to have as many options to get the most out of it as possible.
If Pelicans are ever introduced in regular gameplay, here’s how I see it going down:
Spartan Ops. This would be an ideal place to drive a Pelican, use the chain gun, etc.
Think about it. Player 1 pilots, player 2 operates the chin mounted gun & rockets, player 3 has the manual rear-mounted gun, and player 4 could sit towards the end of the open bay with explosives like a rocket launcher.
Now THAT would be a fun Spartan Ops level.
Forge. Not driveable, but as explosive/destructable scenery. Plus you could perhaps have the back-end mounted gun work. It’d give people some destructable cover with a turret that, until being destroyed, would be a wonderful hard point on the map for both teams to push on and try and take.
I don’t ever see it coming to actual use in regular MM, though.
Agreed, I dont think i meant in MM as much as i meant in the game as a Pilotable vehicle in the end, we have always asked for them and wanted them. Bungie always dissapointed us, we can but hope this changes with 343
I think it would be cool as the initial spawn for the spartans in invasion (assuming invasion is in Halo 4) i.e. The attacking spartans start off in the pelican and get dropped off. This would be the only time it would suit multiplayer. It would suit custom games as well. Pelican race anyone?
Because while it’ll look cool, that’ll be it. There are a number of problems plaguing large troop transports that make them just unusable in Halo.
First up? Nobody is going to use the passenger seats. Nobody used the passenger seats on the Mongoose, Hog or Hornet in H3. Nobody uses the passenger seats on the Revenant or Hog in Reach. Hell, nobody even uses the TURRET on the Scorpion/Wraith. And if Pelican’s/Phantoms spawn with any weaponry, it’ll be guarenteed that nobody will be a passenger in it. They’ll just get a gunner and leave everyone else on their own.
It’s also a bad way to transport people. BTB games aren’t big enough to warrant their inclusion. There aren’t enough players at even Hemorrhage isn’t big enough. Pulling that many people out from across the map to push one specific point is also bad. Pelicans are large vehicles and easily tell your opponent which way your attack from. Now they don’t have to cover everything at once, they just have to watch you. Meanwhile their team is securing map control that you just gave up so you can fly in a giant steel coffin.
Not to mention that even exiting the Pelican, provided you don’t get exploded out of the sky, is going to be a deathtrap. There will be more grenades and Sticky Detonators placed at your feet when you exit than there are snowflakes in Alaska.
So no, just outright no. No Pelicans. They won’t work.
Pelican races would be amazing fun, especialy if they have back turrets. Longsword vs Pelican races in coldsnap were fun… Mainly because i can pilot through the canyons :L
As i said, they dont have to be in your maps… and im 99% sure if we did get the ability to have them in halo 4 they wouldnt be in MM anyway.
As for the piloting while the oppsite team is grabbing the objectives, who said the team would all be stupid enough to jump in it at once? My view on it is that they would create more of a team tatical type job, take a few let the rest walk. Grab a flag and get covered.

And you have ever used a Heavy gunship to defend a position or attack when?
Pelicans have always been good at attack and defence. Halo 2 they were only scripted motion paths i know, but they would do fly-by’s on the scarab occasionaly firing 12 rockets at its legs, and in Halo: CE they were great for attack and deffinatly defense.
> 2) Forge. Not driveable, but as explosive/destructable scenery.
That would be like them giving us the finger.
I would love to see pelicans… I remember hearing from people that in Halo 3 there was going to be a pelican… Then there wasn’t. And Halo: Custom Edition always has fun pelicans to drive
Also, I often saw people get in the passenger seats of the hornet, hog and mongoose as well as the turrets of the tanks. I don’t know what you were playing… Plus how is it a waste of resources if it’s only in customs? A LOT of people are going to use it.
Also, as I’ve said elsewhere, I think that, if they make sufficiently large maps for Invasion, dropships could possibly be used in MM gameplay, for instance, to extract a core from a Spire-like building and fly it to the pick-up point. As long as they balance it out by giving the defenders stuff like AA Turrets that the offensive team have to destroy to get close to the objective with, stuff like that.

> Pfft. Beats the crashed pelicans we’ve been getting in MM maps. It could even be a ‘crashed’ pelican scenery with a turret built in instead of a fully operative one. Still destructable.

> It’s probably the closest we’d ever see to a fully operative Pelican in War Games/Matchmaking. Spartan Ops or Campaign, though? Totally possible to get the real, full deal.
