The Return of the Spiker (Hopefully)

So, the Spiker. We all know it, that somehow intimidating little SMG that the Brutes got in Halo 3. Yet, even then, even on Legendary, every time you went up against one, most people just thought, ‘Oh, that’s cute, the Brute has the useless weapon.’ So, why don’t we make it not useless, and bring it back? It was a staple of the Brutes, after all. And I have an idea to make it unique and more terrifying. Instead of just being a, ‘Brute Plasma Rifle but it doesn’t strip shields as good.’ Why don’t we make those SPIKES actually do something? Like, if we’re going for dynamic vehicle destruction, let’s make the spikes have a unique effect on vehicles. Let them dig in deep into the armour and strip it off faster than other weapons, because they’re big, penetrating spikes. If a Spiker’s rounds get sunk into an engine block of a Warthog, it should either tear it up and set it on fire, expose the engine, or even stall the vehicle maybe. Which brings me to my other idea, why not give the Spikes a, ‘push back’ mechanic. This wouldn’t work on say, a Scorpion. But give the spikes the ability to push back enemy vehicles and slow them down. Obviously not to the degree the Skewer does, I mean just a small knockback effect, that if cumulated enough, could lead to flipping, or just slowing down. I’ll let the devs work out the details of it, I’m not a weapon balancer/designer. But yeah, this is just an idea. And it’d fit with the other Brute weapons shown so far, since they all seem to have blades.

What if the Spiker causes player movement slowdown? The big spikes could be heavy, I don’t know.

So if you’re getting shot you can’t run away as quick but they’re lower damage than the other automatic weapons.

I liked the Spiker. In social killing someone with dual wielding weapons seemed disrespectful.

I considered suggesting that, but it would probably be unfun to fight against on foot, because it could slow you down and make you an even easier headshot for their teammate, which would be frustrating. So I’m not sure it’d be good against players. So far, the Brute weapons have been mostly anti-vehicle, so I was working with that theme.

Yeah that’s a good point, would be good to have more weapons that don’t just fill the same role.

The SMG, Spiker, AR and plasma rifle while have subtle differences are all much of a muchness.

I love the Spiker! I use it fairly often in the campaigns of the three games that have it (Halo 3, Halo 3 ODST, Halo Reach). I love the firing sound, it’s one of my favourite things about the weapon, after its design, of course. I do hope it returns in Infinite, at least for the campaign. After all, it’s the Brutes standard issue weapon!

You might be the first person I’ve ever seen unironically say you love that gun and use it often. Don’t get me wrong, kudos to you, I’ve just never really thought to use it ever, hah. But yes, I definitely agree it should come back, of course. It would be really weird having Brutes as the main antagonists, but not a Spiker… Or even a Brute Shot but that’d be harder to implement, as the Skewer has basically taken the Brute Shot’s unique function. (Displacing/flipping vehicles.)

I also hope it comes back, it’s an iconic weapon for the brutes. Same with the brute shot.

I had an idea not long ago for the brute spike rifle.

That the longer you shoot, the more damage it does, because of the overheating around the barrel like in Halo Reach. This makes the metal of spikes, burning hot and deadly.

The Mangle is kinda like a Brute spike pistol?

I’ve been avoiding looking at the weapons we’re not supposed to know about/have access to. It’s hard when YouTube’s recommended system keeps shoving it in my face, but I’ve been trying. I want each part of the sandbox to be new to me when I first use it, rather than seeing it in a video weeks prior. A Brute Spike Rifle is an interesting concept, though I’m kinda not a fan of the whole, ‘Rifle’ thing. Like when the Plasma Rifle was replaced by the Storm Rifle, and actually looked like a rifle. I like Halo guns to look weird, at least the Alien ones.

The Mangler was shown in Halo Infinite Campaign Gameplay Premiere 8-Minute Demo, and it’s just reminding me of the spike rifle and mangle in one. It also acts like a pistol when shooting. That’s all I have seen it from and nothing more. It’s hard to be spoiler free indeed, but we all have seen the mangler in a gameplay demo?

I have always called it the Spike rifle, or Brute spike rifle, since Halo 3 and Reach. You can call it Spiker, I don’t care. But my question is, we are talking type-25 Carbine, also known as the Spiker or Spike Rifle?

I also love using the Spike rifle, in Halo 3, ODST and Reach. It is my favorite design of weapon, Even in multiplayer I use it. You saying you like the weapon to return, but never used it? We are talking about the same weapon?

considering there’s categorized damage types with specific roles; kinetic, electric, and plasma, brute weapons could have their own “trauma” damage type that causes bleed.

Tongue in cheek response: Today I realized Halo is an RPG now.

Maybe the Spiker can be a good anti-small vehicle weapon. I like the idea of slowing down, pushing players or ghosts.

I also think maybe the Spiker could permanently lower your health (not your shields), seeing as its a massive spike in your gut.

Ha! Well, I do really like this weapon. Now, I don’t know about other people, but personally, I use weapons like the Spiker because I like them, not because I feel that I need to due to a weapon being powerful or something (the Spiker definitely isn’t, haha). In my opinion, the Spiker has a great design and a nice sound effect, I find it fun to use, and that’s good enough for me!

It would definitely be nice to have the Brute Shot back too. I don’t think the Skewer being an anti vehicle weapon means the Brute Shot can’t be in. While the Skewer can knock a vehicle over (as seen with the Warthog in the multiplayer trailer), chances are it will be extremely damaged or even destroyed after just one shot from that weapon. Whereas the Brute Shot won’t do quite as much damage while still achieving the same effect of tipping a vehicle over. Also, it can be effective against infantry too. Ah, but the real vehicle displacement specialist is the Concussion Rifle. In Halo Reach, the thing seems to be able to send light vehicles careening out of control!

Honestly “plasma stun” has been one of the most requested returning features since its disappearance from the franchise after CE.
