The return of classic movement mechanics?

“Meeting player expectations”

So

  • Sprint is back (and I think it is here to stay, because the map is huge) - Equipment is back (grapling hoop might be annoying in multiplayer, let’s wait and see how it is implemented) - Slide is back (at some point in the Demo, Chief slides to the side to fight a Brute) - Smart-link is back (For a split of a second, it is used in the Rifle similar to the DMR. It has a little animation of aiming down sights, but the zoom is projected into the HUD) - Clamber is back. - Spartan Charge, Ground Pound, Stabilize and Thrust were not used at any point. (which is a shame, thrust was juicy).

Of course none of us saw multiplayer yet, but it looks like this throws away all the things people told us they loved about Halo 5.

“you move blazing fast like in the lore!” - It honestly looked like a regular human. The opener even kinda made it clear that the superarmor means nothing without the person in it.

“It’s open world so you gotta sprint!” - Just look at that snippet of the map, would you really run from one objective to the other? It would take like 5 minutes of travelling to cover that on foot, you’d be glad there are warthogs around.

“I feel like a Spartan!” - But you removed ground pound and spartan charge (it seems), two abilities that show the force and destructive capabilities of a Spartan in full armor. You removed Thrusters (it seems) so you can’t show the reaction time of a Spartan. What are you even looking for then? You got the cool grappling hook yes, butit’s literally an extension of your armor. Anyone can use a grappling hook and they attach one to your arm. I don’t say Jetpacks make you feel like a Spartan when we’ve seen ODSTs use them.

Like I never thought I’d see the day where I’d say Halo 5 felt more “energetic” than this did.

So. The key art hyped me up with the obvious reference to h1. I was ready to be blown away.

I was not.

Base movement speed is ridiculously slow. Hence effing sprint is back (boooo!). Clamber is back (boooo!). Gun mechanics and hitreg seemed to be full on halo 5…which is okay I guess, but plasma weapons should be projectile which they so are not in this game ( I think I saw some needles from a needler instateleport to the player).

Grappling actually looked like a fun mechanic to be honest. For the campaign. If this is in multiplayer it’s going to be hooooorrible.

343i essentially said think Halo 3’s equipment for the grappling hook in multiplayer.

Clamber was used once

Yea, so when you’re getting shot you can just zip up to the top level of the map.

i think there gone add in multiplayer maps more kill bariers on high spots then we ever have seen in a halo game.

Old mechanics are completly dead

did not notice that, for sure it used. Will update the post

The sprint speed looked much slower to me than what it was in reach, 4 and 5, I really hope that’s not an attempt to cater to both sides of the classic vs modern debate. I’d prefer a faster base movement speed and more emphasis on vehicles for travel, but if sprint has to stay it should at least be satisfying to use. I don’t think slowing sprint down will add any appeal for people who don’t like the mechanic, and will only make it less fun to use for people that do like it.

Is it me or they kinda baited us with the aesthetics from the two traillers just to show us their true colors today. i was expecting halo 2/3 gameplay not some viceral rpg

This is probably one of the “compromises” that has been talked about a lot.

Though, I’m somewhat going to wait until I hear that kind of critique from “the other side”.

While I’m somewhat going to agree with the last part, I’m sure there’s more energy to be gotten out of the game than the Demo showed.
Low difficulty level, make it understandable what happens on the screen, have time to showcase enemies and vistas, stuff like that.

Edit: The “meeting player expectation” is a reference to one of the big reasons Sprint was a player mechanic in Halo 4 and Halo 5.
It may be gutted, if it really is, but it’s there to appease the fans that want it.

And like that, my hype is evaporated, my $60 is saved and Halo is dead to me.

Thanks 343! I loved Halo for many reasons, but ya finally killed my desire to play new ones. Good job. I am rather annoyed about this, because its like they just refuse to listen in any capacity. Halo 5 fans aren’t satisfied because the game seems slow. Classic fans aren’t satisfied because of Sprint. An attempt to appeal to both bases fails because its so clearly a half measure that doesn’t work.

I honestly don’t get why they don’t just bump the base movement speed up to the same as the sprint speed and then get rid of sprint all together.

hey that’s just you my man, if you don’t like don’t buy it, remember sprint was LITERALLY in reach, but, you do you, if you lost any hope of the future of halo then get out of the forums and do something for yourself

Im gonna hope to shine some positivity on today.
So we saw clamber and sprint return… and aiming down sight for a percision weapon. If feeling pretty neutral about that. It seems groundpound, thrust, and spartan charge are gone.
So a compromise technically was made which is exactly what id expect. Thrust being replaced with grapple hook might be a good idea… especially for the reason that its becoming an equipment rather than a base mechanic. Its functionality seems rather interesting. As long as its in limited use in mp.

Overall from the perspective of movement mechanics im pretty pleased… not overwelming joyed or dissapointed. Im satisfied.
But there are other things i have things to say about… but not on this topic.

if you have read the other thread the sprint discussion thread that is 839 page’s long that the communety from halo is split about sprint.
if there remove sprint then you get the same hate post’s about the game what you see now when it has sprint.
so will it be chance then no so this was for 343 more a hard decision to make.

that there keep sprint in the game but that there have lower it is something a belance there have found in the big discusion about it.
that some players still not happy about it that the mechanic is still in the game thats something there need to deal with now more and with the other halo titels.

Wait, were you really surprised by this outcome? Sadly, 343i’s track-record should have informed you that this is what would happen.

How is it a compromise if one side get almost everything they wanted (sprin, clamber, no charge/GP, only loss is thrust) and the other gets nothing of what they wanted (no faster BMS, sprint is in, thrust, on of the few things many could have lived with is gone, but yes charge/GP, which noone really cared about are gone as well)
