The reasoning behind using "Requiem"

So we now know that the world Masterchief is headed towards is named Requiem…why exactly? Why not just leave the name as simple and basic like calling it another “instillation” or something along those terms. What is the meaning behind 343 Industries using the name Requiem for this shield world?

The word requiem revolves around the idea that it is a mass for the dead and/or music for the dead at that mass. So basically, when you hear or see the word requiem just think around the idea of dead people and the service for their death.

Just go ahead and jot down any thoughts or opinions on the selected name. Maybe it holds some serious significance or maybe it doesn’t, but I would like to see the community’s ideas and that is all.

Bungie has always had a thing for making its players think about certin things, looks like 343i is continuing it.Another reason why i like 343,maybe even more then bungie.

It very much holds a meaning; it is a shield world after all. It’s goal is to protect whatever is inside of it from the Halo Array.

i think its called that because the anciant threat might of been thought wiped out, but it is surviving on that planet.

Requiem is a Shield World, it’s where the Forerunners were supposed to take refuge when the rings went off. It obviously can’t be called Installation X because it’s not a Halo, so it’s obvious about that part.

If the Forerunners failed to take refuge then … they died building it. So the name makes Perfect sense to me…

Right, but it’s just that you would think if they were going to name a shield it would have been something along the terms of protecting/keeping alive and not something that basically means already dead.

I’m assuming that it’s the Forerunners who gave it that name, so why would they call it something like that if they intended on it being used to protect sentient beings from the Halo Array?

If it turns out that it wasn’t the Forerunners who gave it that name but instead the Human race or a Covenant species who finds it, then I would understand how that name makes sense.

Simple, really: Mendicant Bias sent John there on purpose to “atone for his sins” so that his creators (Forerunner) could forgive him. This has been confirmed information.

Requiem, by extension, would be an appropriate name- John is being sent as a message to the “dead” Forerunner race on what we can assume was one of their most important or last surviving worlds.

link on the confirmed mendicant bias thing?

I like this idea mostly because of how much sense it makes. What I’m getting out of your comment is that Mendicant Bias has basically chosen the name for the world (it makes much more sense for someone after the effects of the Halo Array to name it that instead of someone preactivation), and that Chief is being sent there by Mendicant Bias as a means to give service and make amends for the death of the Forerunners. Getting straight to it, Mendicant is acknowledging the death of all the Forerunners by sending John there to do who knows what and is calling the world “Requiem” based on his action.

Thanks for that comment, I wasn’t even considering that Mendicant Bias might of had something to do with that name…if he did (who honestly knows what is being planned for the story at this point?). Anyways, great comment.

Funny story, after the death of ArchDuke Franz Ferdinand, WW1 began after Austria-Hungary declares war on Serbia.

They held a Requiem Mass for him.

So Requiem could be the start of a very big conflict.

Requiem itself is defined as “Mass for the dead”, now that could mean a number of things…

  1. UNSC dead?
  2. Forerunners?
  3. Precursors?
  4. Or even the Flood?
  5. New enemy we have never faced?

It is implying a gathering of those who support someone who has died. Not sure what is going to happen, maybe the planet itself represents the Mass/Perhaps life and nature, but who is dead?

The Librarian?

It also related to the Church, another reference to Christianity in Halo.

Halo 3 terminals, Halo Encyclopedia, Contact Harvest, and Cryptum/Primordium all have mentions of Mendicant’s actions, goal of atonement, and how John was the perfect example of atonement to send to the Forerunners.

EDIT- Figure I should be more specific to help you out.

Throughout the terminals of Halo 3, Mendicant is /attempting/ to communicate with John-117 through them. He is trying to explain that he has been helping the Spartan on the Ark so that he might atone for his sins, and he implied that he would send the Spartan so to speak to atone.

John didn’t end up near Requiem by mere chance. It was Mendicant’s final act before (presumably) perishing on the Ark.
