Adaption- Ever notice how the first game of a series you play is often your favorite? Or at least, the one you enjoyed playing the most? It might be the first Zelda game, or GTA3 over Vice City and succeeding GTA games. Like anything we do, we find our fondest memories the first time we do something. Often times, we find it difficult to enjoy succeeding games in a series despite the quality of a game, simply because we have adapted and our mind tells us “not so exciting, been there done that.”
Note: Look up hedonistic adaption.
Fake Nostalgia- We all think back to the old days, when “thing’s were great” and “when you were really you”. It is natural for us to look back into the past and build up our times and memories into something grand. It’s actually a great thing to do. But often times these memories are a bit skewed, and if you really think about how much you enjoyed the game or how much time you spent playing it, you might realize your shining a bit of a brighter light on it. Also, a lot of these memories revolve around the game, yes, but they are remembered by you because of the people you were with. Is your nostalgia about the ending of your Halo: CE campaign run really because the game was that great, or because you shared that moment with your brother and grew a stronger bond?
Cynical World- I love these forums, and in my short time here it’s apparent that there are some really cool people here. With that being said, we all feed into the cynicism. We all have a voice, and these forums give us an outlet to voice our complaints. Given our cynical world and society, our tendency is always to shed light on the negative aspects, instead of sharing our positive experiences. Media and society is built on conflict and negativity. It reminds me of the difference in the WWE/WWF in the 70’s/80’s/90’s vs. now. Every move, angle, and word spoken is scrutinized now. There weren’t forums or internet back then. Nothing can be appreciated for what it is, even if the product has deteriorated.
Lack of Competition- What competition did Halo: CE have? Halo 2? Do you believe that your view on previous Halo games might be skewed because there was little option to play anything else that was comparable? Now a days we have dozens of new FPS’s every year. This deteriorates the experience for all games as we adapt and never really appreciate any of them.
Question 1- Is there ever an ending where 343/Halo wins and we all live happily ever after? Or is there never an ideal ending where our cynicism would only be at least 20/80 or 10/90?
Question 2- If we lived in 2001-2005 the way our society is structured now, would Halo: CE and Halo 2 be perceived in the same way?
Note: Just to make it clear, I loved Halo: CE and Halo 2.
Halo 2 anniversary is what Halo 5 should have been. It was new, it looks good, and it plays like a Halo game. I hate Halo 5 because it pretends to be something it’s not. If 343 wants to make a game with sprinting, shooting, ground pounding, driving, thrusting, aliens, and flag capturing, then more power to them. Hell, I might even enjoy playing such a game. But when a game like that comes out and they slap the Halo title on it, then we are that much further from getting a true Halo game again. H2a, when it works, is fantastic. I don’t hate it because it’s new. I’m not blinded by the competition that was around when classic Halo was new(if that were the case, I wouldn’t still be having Halo CE LAN parties).
To answer question 1, there is a solution where 343/Halo can come out on top. That scenario would be for 343 to stop trying to put their own spin on the Halo games and make something that plays like a Halo game, like they did with H2a.
People don’t like it because it doesn’t fit what their definition of Halo is.
Good thing I don’t give a -Yoink- what their definition is, as I’m thoroughly enjoying this iteration and find it superior in many ways to prior iterations.

Truth, each person has their own view of halo, mine differs from others but I don’t go around telling them their version of halo is wrong like others do.

Same here. So many old schoolers here looking back at H2 & 3 with rose colored glasses. Those games were great, but I bet a game like that wouldn’t do very well today. I love the direction 343 is going and can’t wait to see whats next. Now if we could just get some damn game modes and permanent playlists.

The reason H2A played the way you said a halo game should play in your opinion is because they just copied the original halo game in every aspect, re textured everything using the latest visual design programs and then just shipped it like that. It was more Bungie’s game than 343’s.
While there’s definitely a hint of truth here, try not to generalize lest you have the evidence to back it up. Even though about 90% of the criticism I’ve heard concerning Halo 5 just irrationally alludes to: “Bungie didn’t do it, therefore it’s terrible”, there are people who don’t like Halo 5 for actual reasons.

No, there will be no end until they decide to change the name on their game. The newer games will always be compared to the previous games if the title of the game has Halo on it. Just like how the new Mass Effect will be compared to the previous Mass Effects and how Final Fantasy is compared to the previous Final Fantasy games.
H:CE and H2 received a lot of hate as well. There were websites created dedicated to bash Halo 2. This atmosphere around gaming has been here for a while now.

I do get a giggle every time someone that doesn’t like the direction of 343’s Halo says they don’t want a copy of old Halos, yet that’s exactly what they request when given the opportunity…
