Okay so this is NOT going to just be another one of my rants, I’m gonna do my best not to rant here because this is a legitimate observation. Let’s get started:
Alright so we all know Halo 5 is far from perfect, albeit having quite a few nice gems in it such as Forge, Super Fiesta, the Infected Sword, Mythic Weapons, Infection, Action Sack, and Player made Prefabs, but the #1 problem with Halo 5 is simply, no sense of progression, I mean yeah you can complete your req collection, but does it feel like you progressed through the game, or just got lucky in an RNG card pack? Rank resetting also removes the sense of progression previous Halo titles had, it makes players feel like picking up a different game because they can’t show how good they really are. I have noticed that Halo 5’s population is dying off not due to lack of gametypes, or 343 doing whatever the hell they feel like, no, it’s that there ISN’T a sense of progression or pride in getting that special armor piece you’ve had your eye on, or finally hitting the max level in online multiplayer cause it’s just gonna reset in a month, this is what KILLS a population on games, that feeling of nothing cool to do to get new gear, or even achievements anymore holy crap there are WAY too many useless achievements, but that’s not the topic here, maybe another day. But I stand by what I have said.
The frustrating part for me is, previous games had systems that accomplished this that the players loved.
First the ranking… A hybrid of Halo 3 and Reach would be perfect. Give us something like the 1-50 system in game that does not go away. So you have that sense of permanent progression. Then have a second rank like a playlist rank that resets. This could give you an idea of the time a player has invested or his skill over a month/season whatever versus the lifetime of the game.
So you can see in a pregame lobby and say yea that one guy is a 40 but he is only a Sargent. So you know he hasn’t played much that month, or wow that guy is a 35 but is a general.
In addition I would like to see a global rank like Reach had. So you can quickly get an idea of a player based on a multi part rank that tells you not only a players recent history/ability but overall skill and total investment in the game.
Second armor… I would also like to see armor unlock rather than being part of a micro transaction system. Have armors unlock for playing other games, reaching rank requirements, completing campaign, achievements etc. Maybe have variants that you can only get via req packs that are only available after you unlock the base armor. I am also a firm believer that the Reach armory has the H5 req system beat hand downs. Give us credits to buy what we want, and again have variants that would only appear in req packs once you have purchased the base.
And for god sakes stop with the emblems, it should not be the only info you get from the main pregame lobby screen, they also shouldn’t be such a huge part of a grind. Its like they replaced everything with this massive pile of mostly crap emblems.
I would like to see your definitive proof of what you claim is actually “killing” H5.
It is currently near impossible to find a ranked game on Halo 3, if you didn’t play it during it’s prime time. The way the matchmaking system works and the fact most players in the ranked playlists are pretty far up the 1-50 rank system, means that players who didn’t play H3’s ranked gametypes much and only tried to recently, will never find games.
A ranking system with no resets may be a better option, but it will ruin the population even moreso as time passes. A ranking system with resets may seem like a burden, but it helps the ranked playlists retain population.

We’re not talking about finding matches in H3, we’re talking about a sense of progression in Halo 5.

You’re the one saying that the sense of progression is lost with Halo 5’s ranking system, complaining about the resets, saying previous Halos did it better, and saying that it lowers the population.

Resetting rank is a good idea for competitive games. People’s skill fluctuates; some seasons maybe better worse than others. Ranks resets allow for a more accurate skill ranking. I see no reason why I should still be ranked Diamond in SWAT when I only hit Diamond rank one time back around launch. Obviously I’m not what would be considered Diamond now, but if I hit my Diamond rank and then stopped playing, I’d still have that rank even though I really shouldn’t.
