I think that no visible skill-based ranking system is a massive detriment. Much, much, more of a detriment to Halo than people realize. I have been playing games for years, and I know what makes people tick. It doesn’t take a genius to figure this out. I remember people playing H2 and H3 for hours just trying to rank up once. Oh, you think they are being stupid caring so much about a little number? Well, unfortunately, that’s the way the cookie crumbles, and the fact is that people will play more with a visible system. You know what happened with Reach for the majority of people. After about 6 games, everyone got bored with the game, because the whole system was a cluster#$%^. That’s what’s happening again. No one cares that the non-visible ranking system is said to be improved, which I am highly skeptical of.
You know what would of made Halo 3 suck for most people? If there were only social playlists. That’s exactly what happened with Reach, and that’s exactly what’s happening here, and 343 isn’t even giving any speckle of a visible skill ranking system (and, btw, in H3 social playlists had an invisible rank, just like Reach/H4).
And seriously, I want Halo 4 to be a good game. I really do. That’s why I’m making this thread, so hopefully 343 will see it and listen. Because I think the ranking system is absolutely critical, and I think it is way more important than most people realize. A bad game can be addicting because it has a basic ranking system.

I think that Reach was just flawed on so many levels. Incentive, lack of change (yeah, Reach didn’t do anything too new, unlike Halo 4), and balance to name a few It did have Ranked though, The Arena remember? It wasn’t good but it was something i guess.
I always though Halo 2 and Halo 3 were incredibly fun not just because of ranked but because they were easy to play. Especially Halo 2, even newer players could enjoy it and do decently (with all dat aim assist of course). Sure 3 had flaws with netcode and BR spread, but still, there were more players that liked it compared to those that did not.
Reach would have not been so boring if the mechanics were better, but yes, the lack of ranked/social was a big contributor.
I enjoyed the just-for-fun goof around aspects of Reach with friends (BTB/swat/snipers) but the competitive play e.g. Team Slayer was horrible and a BIG reason was the lack of good trueskill matchmaking combined with a ranked/social division.
343i, you’re making a big mistake. Please fix it. There is NO downside to introducing a ranked/social distinction.
> People got bored with reach because the game was mechanically flawed.
i mostly got bored because of the lack of a trueskill system that worked. Getting paired up with or against players who suck and me going +15 most games got old very fast
My problem with it is that they said it will be like Reach… which has a piss-poor matching system. It’d better have better matchmaking system, because I remember the promises Bungie made, and look how the turned out. We shall see.

Yup… the best mechanics in the world won’t make going +15 and losing because you have incompetent teammates fun. Same goes for partying up with skilled friends and roflstomping randoms 50-10 over and over and over…

Exactly. That +15 means nothing if we don’t know if we’re playing relatively good or bad players.
I completely agree. I just hope 343i have been listening and surprise us on release day Everyday i come onto this forum hoping i’ll see that skill-based ranking has been announced. Halo 4 has the potential to be the best yet, but it can’t be without a skill-based ranking system.
Yes Reach’s gameplay wasn’t the best, but that’s not why it was so unpopular. If Reach had ranking like Halo 2/3, i wouldn’t have stopped playing it, i’d probably be playing it right now actually.

Agreed.
Also, why is everyone so up in arms over a visible ranking system? I that the number one concern was that the skill based ranking system worked and matched you to people of your skill level. Not rather or not you can see the damn level you’re at.

I’m so tired of hearing people say this.
It’s NOT a ranking system it’s a SKILL BASED MATCHMAKING SEARCHING SYSTEM! What’s so hard to not get about that? Where are the ranks? That’s like them implementing a progressive system that’s not visible. Oh it’s there, you just don’t see it… wtf? That’s like going to work everyone’s getting payed the same amount for no matter what position but oh you’re a higher position, you just don’t see it. OKAY?! You’re assigned more difficult tasks and you don’t get rewarded for it? What’s this, communism?! Yeah let me stay in work for 12hours a day and get the same pay as the person working 4. There’s no incentive to work anymore. No drive. People will never understand this basic simple concept. This is literally the dumbest thing since banks giving out loans to people they knew couldn’t repay them. Such a simple concept! Whatever, you’ll see the outcome sooner or later
