The Ranking System Reset

I very much like the ranking system for Halo 5 (even though I wish the monthly resets were every 2 months) but I know for a fact my friends absolutely despise the ranking system since they feel they “earned their rank” and “they should have their rank in a certain playlist without it purposely being reset” but honestly I like the idea since you have to work every month to maintain your Oryx or Master rank within the game. What do you guys think? Do you guys like the new ranking system or do you just upright hate it?

I think the seasons should only be for onyx and champion tiers. leave us regular players at what we are at. I mean what’s the point of resetting a gold or platinum players rank when the top two tiers are the ones with something to prove.

Resetting it every month could make more people want to play longer because if they do bad in their placement games it could take them a long time to move up. If they keep playing and getting better then they could place higher the next month and keep trying to beat their previous high rank or a friends highest rank. It could work just like they hope. But I also understand some people might be bothered that their rank doesn’t stay. I guess we will have to wait and see how it all plays out.

I wish the seasons were a bit longer say 3 months. I had a discussion about this in another op. There are 5 ranked playlists in Halo 5 at launch. The first season ends or starts I cant figure out which one in December.

5 Playlists:
Team Arena
Slayer
Breakout
SWAT
FFA

If the playlists reset in an organized fashion…say going down the list, well after Team Arena it will be (technically) 5 months before Team Arena gets reset again. because it has to cycle through all the other playlists to reach the top again. That’s 5 months to keep/perfect your rank =). Least that’s how I see it now.

Halo 5 Ranked Playlist SourceEDIT: I don’t want the season length to be 3 months, because if the rotation goes in the fashion I stated, there would only be a few seasons before Halo 6 comes out lol (considering you do the math)

I’m not sure how I feel about this. At least show what the previous ranks were.

You had people in Halo 2 get carried in Team Slayer to the 40s and then never played the ranked playlist again. And they could say they were so-and-so rank.

With this system, you have to prove it. I like it.

Same thing in Halo 3. So many -Yoink- 50s…all boosted accounts.

I don’t know how I feel about the reset. I can see the good and the bad. I guess we’ll just have to wait a few months and see how it plays out.

IMO, the rank reset is needed, because it will keep people grinding to improve. One can just get to a high rank and leave it alone forever, like they did in Halo 2.

I like your opinions guys, my friend also said he’d like it to be more like the Halo 3 ranking system (did I also mention he’s a purist?) then what it is now. Personally times have changed and I like what 343 is doing right now. I do agree with the resets but i do wish they did it every 1 and a half months to 2 months since 1 just feels kinda short. I guess we’ll see when the game comes out if we like it or not.

Seasons might actually be the thing that halo players needed all along. I think it would make the game still relevant in the long term because we’d come back every season to either improve or maintain dominance. It’ll keep people coming back like how people still come back to diablo 3 every new season just to take another crack at the leaderboards

Not sure I like it, but I will have to get used to it I guess. I don’t like the idea of working hard to get to my rank and then it being wiped.

Given a chance, I believe most players will find that this will bring a new level of replayability to multiplayer and will help to sustain a large player base.

This is a great point, not everybody wants to be affiliated with the more competitive aspect of Halo. So segregating the competitive and the casual players is a good idea in regards to the ranking system. MCC way of ranking up is a good way to implement that feature.

Can someone explain how the rankings and seasons work I’m confused

I hate the idea of resets. It’s basically just an excuse to cater to casuals who are afraid of playing Arena and losing their rank or the people who perpetuated the “rank lock” myth from H3. So instead we make it so you can only rank up in divisions, can’t rank down and we get clean slates every few months or whatever.

I hated it in Reach too.

I hope they track a highest rank achieved both ingame and online.

This system, if it works as well as it is intended to, is ideal for maintaining competitive play as well as more standard/casual play. I assume that once you’ve ranked, your previous season’s ranking will be considered for your new league placement matches for each new season (think, same as SC2).

Your skill will always be accurately represented… What’s the downside? If you are placed too high, you will be dropped down to where you belong and vice versa.

I also assume that your highest rank achieved will be tracked and displayed in your profile.

Maybe I understood the article wrong, but didn’t it say “select Playlists”?

The way I’m thinking that this will work is more akin to Diablo 3 style seasons as in they are pretty much the same thing. You play it as much as you can and you get pretty visual rewards. This would mean that we’d get a seasonal TDM or Seasonal objective MM hopper and still have our main ranks that we can continually work. Again, maybe i understood the post wrong… either way Reach did the exact same thing and Reach’s ranked gameplay… well it… it… it sucked so bad.

I’m fine with a reset every so often though, but it doesn’t make sense for players who are more lone wolf acclimated by playing solo in MM. Teams of 4 that talk to each other will usually always edge out a single amazing player by killing noobs.

Just go to one of the recent 343 updates on their blog post page and find where it talks about ranking in arena. It shouldn’t be too hard to find.

I think it’s good for replay value as you have something to achieve every month but I hope they still acknowledge your highest achieved rank or something in the stats.
