My friend who loses constantly and gets ~8 more deaths than kills every match got placed into Onyx. I get MVP almost every match and got placed into Diamond, which I cannot get out of. Most games I play result in my team losing, although I got more kills and a better KDA than anyone else. Please note that this isn’t about me being “da best” or whatever. Read below.
How is this a “skill-based” ranking system? I get scrubs on my team who have the Onyx rank and go 6-16, while my Diamond self goes 19-9 and still loses. I am literally trapped in this Diamond bracket where everyone around me is Onyx but does worse than me.
Why is there a mandatory ranking system in the first place? I just want to play the game without having to be in try-hard mode 100% of the time. As it is now, I’m constantly having to work hard to carry a team of players ranked higher than me. Either get the ranking system right and make it optional, or don’t have it at all. Not everyone wants to play MLG E-Sports Simulator 2015: Mountain Dew Edition constantly.
I got very, very underranked (gold one, when my qualifiers were majority won and at least a 1.75 kd average) and im seeing lots of people who did much worse get put in every higher rank through onyx. it astounds and confuses me and its pretty frustrating.

I don’t care about my ranking. What bothers me is that it matches me with people ranked higher than me and expects me to carry them. Every. Single. Game.
I do agree that ranking up based on winning games is a terrible idea as one cannot predict their teammates skill level which forces players to obtain and constantly use the same group at the risk of not ranking down regardless of how they are personally playing. Rank should be obtained and advanced/devolved based on performance of each player individually and have utterly not a single thing to do with their teams performance. For example, my FFA K/D is good because I only have to worry about myself but my team K/D is putrid because I am constantly worried about having to win the game and thus I make stupid mistakes by trying to rush, do too much, etc. The game should advance players based on their individual performance and not their random chance to get good teammates.
I played 10 games of slayer, didn’t care what I ranked, I just played to learn the game and have fun. at least 7 of the games I had under 1.0 K/D and like 1-2 games I had negative K/D. After the 10th game I got Onyx rank 1500, In no way I should’ve gotten that. It seems like there shouldn’t even be ranks under Diamond because I havent seen anyone place in those.
Can’t say I was surprised about how it ranks on win’s and demotes on losses. Halo 3 ranked playlist’s were the same. as of game types like Lone Wolfs, Team Slayer, Swat, and Team Snipers. Halo Reaches “Arena” mode was done in a similar fashion as well. So, with that it can’t be much of a surprise that 343I picked what was the same for two other Halo titles.
Luckily, your K/D has some merits. Maybe not in the matchmaking making system but it’s a good way to gain possible Spartans in you fire team that are of equal skill so that then you could have higher chances of winning consecutive games. Though winning and having a high K/D at the end of the game could get you that promotion into another sub level within the different rank levels.
Rank based on W/L and team play >>>>>>>>>>>>>> Rank based on individual performance
Unfortunately my friend it sounds like you’re in what the LoL and Starcraft community calls “ELO Hell”. Just keep on plugging away at it, get a group if you can, and you’ll eventually get out of it.

I’ve done this at least twice. It’s extremely irritating. I don’t understand the ranking system either though. I don’t think it is purely W/L. I think some other stats factor in slightly too. Either way it doesn’t properly rate players imo.
It’s a team game… if you want to progress, get a team and don’t blame a loss on the inevitable random that will quit and suck. You’re setting yourself up for failure.
If you don’t care about your rank and say you would rather not try hard, then don’t focus on your rank.
They should have left the ranking system how it was in the beta honestly, with just an increase in the amount of ranks. In the beta, you still had 10 placement matches before you get ranked. Once you get ranked, you could literally only be matched up with people who are your rank (Gold, Silver, ect.), and one above and below, I believe (could be wrong but that’s usually how it was for me). You still go up and down based on wins and losses, but your personal performance in the game also affect how much your skill level moves. So even if your team got wrecked and you lost, but you still went like 20-5, your rank wouldn’t drop nearly as much as the teammates who did bad. I thought that was a great idea for the ranking system and something that should have been kept in place, and as it appears to me in this game, it has not stayed the same. Also, the beta had a progress bar for how close you were to ranking up or deranking. I miss that too
The ranking system works like 1-50 in terms of leveling up and down, but it doesn’t work for matching you up against people of similar skill. I’m Platinum in Team Arena and earlier I got a game where the other team had one player in Platinum, while the rest were not even ranked yet. That doesn’t seem like it’s working well. People who have not been ranked should only play against people who also have not been ranked. I don’t wanna be Diamond and get a team of people who aren’t ranekd yet and who are actually gonna end up in Bronze at the end of their ten games. Doesn’t seem very fair
I’m just being honest, I’d rather a social playlist. Too many times in ranked I start off with a guy not moving the first 5 minutes of the game that is ridiculous especially on CTF. I don’t mind rank being based on winning but please, add a social playlist so we can learn the maps and calls outs better because not everyone has a team to play with.

I just don’t want to be ranked at all. Whoever came up with the idea that every playlist in every game should have skill-based matchmaking is a moron. And a communist. It’s like the blue shell in Mario Kart. People don’t want that.
The only thing I have against the ranking system is that you cannot go down a rank tier. Someone can get carried because of the how good your teammates are and you can stay in that rank without having to worry about going from onyx to diamond. Some people can get lucky, get matched with good teammates but are not that great. That is my only problem with the ranking system.
The ranking system should never be about individual skills because Halo is and always has been a game focused around teamwork. If you don’t believe me, try playing a game with randoms against a group of 4.
I do like that the ranking system matches you with people around the same RANK as you. Like people have said earlier, that rank doesn’t always represent their skill set but that is really only for anything below onyx rank. There are some cases where people get onyx but do not deserve it, and it is shown while playing against other onyx players. I’ve been in multiple games where everyone is onyx+ and it is a very competitive game. Everyone of these games did not end in a landslide either. Most if not every game resulted in very close scores.
Remember, the only way to get better is to stop focusing on blaming others for the game’s outcome but rather focus on what you can do to help the team.

The answer is absolutely nothing. These people will lose no matter who they’re teamed up with.
Your friend won more games then you and now your complaining that he has a better rank then you. Why don’t you win more games then your friend and then you can pass his rank?
You say your trapped in a rank. Why because you keep winning and losing? Try to be more consistent and you will be out of that rank.
Your playing Arena, where the competitive players play. If you can’t handle it then I suggest you play Warzone. Everyone wants to get their rank up so they try hard. In this game they made it so that if your team wins then you rank. Its a team game. If you think your team is bringing you down play FFA. But you will still get try hards because its Arena.
Looked at your recent games: 3-15, 16-16, 8-14, 16-17, 13-12…you’re right, the ranking system is pretty messed up, because you sure as hell don’t deserve diamond lol. You’re Silver at best. Stop complaining if you suck, just deal with it or get better

My friend lost all 10 of his pre-rank games while being on the bottom of the leaderboards and still got Onyx.
And get tf out of here with your “if you can’t handle competitive play” crap. If you wanna talk trash, go to GameFAQs or some other trash forum. You’ve got no business being a -Yoink- on HaloWaypoint.
