My last game for instance. One person was diamond 5, a few level higher than me. Got 30 kills in oddball, that IS HELPFUL but he had 8 seconds actually helping us win the timer.
The rest of my team, Plat 1 (awful player who did nothing but lose us the game, he delivered the oddball to the team every time he held the ball out of his 9 seconds and just ran at the enemy to drop it and turn around and run…)
Plat 5, he’s lower, but close enough to make it make sense why he’s in the lobby, this player helped us with the objective quiet a bit, he actually was about equal to my help and I noticed he was the only spartan I was with guarding with the ball.
The diamonds make sense why they are here. I’m happy to lose to other diamonds the way we did, id EXPECT these players to be just ever so slightly worse, and quiet a bit better than me. The Diamond 6 I instantly figured out that was the spartan to worry about and focus on in 2v1s
But why is a Plat 2, unranked and Plat 1 in this game at all? Shouldn’t low level plays first play against high level plats and high level golds? Maybe the fact you can invite your friend who is bronze 1 into a onyx lobby easily, and completely mess the balancing up
I’m not insulted, and it’s not the amount of rank up/down that bother me that much. I’ve contemplated that maybe I’m just a Diamond player. It’s the fact that everytime I get to half D5, like clockwork, the matchmaking makes me lose like 5 games in a row, everytime… It’s suspicious, maybe it is bad luck I guess.
I don’t understand how the ranked matchmaking is working. I’m in low onyx and it frequently makes lopsided matches where one team is loaded with Onyx players and the other team is loaded with high platinum or diamond players and it’s a slaughter. Or, it loads one team with diamond and low Onyx and the other team with Onyx 1800+.
The ranking system has been terrible all of H5 and now I’m seeing they are using it for infinite.
The only way to consistently go up is to carry lower skilled/ranked players. You need the other three people on your team to be bronze/silver. Halo is no longer about finding the best players and making incredible teams but finding the worst ones you can consistently carry. The problem with this is that it destroys everyone else’s mmr in the process.
“but don’t you need to fight onyx players to be considered onyx” - nope, population dictates there’s not enough of them on. Besides, some of them did the same thing you are. and while carrying 3 silvers against 3 diamonds is not an easy thing to do it doesn’t really make you a pro. You simply don’t learn how to communicate properly and go to the spots pros do.
At the end of the day it’s a system that allows you to match alone AND with a massive group. I remember back in h3 where you NEEDED a team with mics to communicate in order to get any decent rank. I.E actually playing like pros not just some random guy with good reflexes. It’s just not like that anymore and probably never will be. There is just no reason to group up with other good players; they only make the expectations levied upon you completely unrealistic; if you’re fighting with 3 Onxys against 4 diamonds the system will say you should ALL stomp. However, there’s only so many people to kill on the other team and it’s basically impossible for all of you to hit the number of kills you need, even if you are all truly equally skilled. That’s also before the diamonds start leaving, hiding and just generally not trying. You can go into a match where everyone but 1 quits and you will all lose mmr due to it being impossible to meet unrealistic expectations.
I miss the days where progressing rank meant that you were actually progressing in skill. To get over that hump from diamond to onyx you would need to learn the spots, buy a mic AND really put some effort into getting in. Now, just having the reflexes and skills is enough to get you past people you should be losing to.
I actually like the ranking system. It’s solid. But it’s currently suffering, along with match-making with the lower populations.
Hopefully S2 can rescue this.
The problem here is being able to squad up with lower ranked players.
There needs to be a limit on the range of rank.
If you have to take a lower ranked buddy into battle - do it in Social.
And from what I’ve seen (from the receiving end) the best recipe is to have a couple of Onyx players trying to rank up… add in a Smurf account to increase your firepower (mid-Gold to low Plat is ok)… and a really bad player (eg. Silver) to really drag the opposition rank down.
The silver player can actually be that rank. And is probably preferred as it leaves more kills for the two players trying to rank up.
It could be. And should be. If they just added limitations to squads.
