I was at the very bottom of diamond 1 and lost 5 games in a row and didn’t derank to platinum. This means that all players are being skewed to the diamond rank. If everyone is diamond rank, that basically makes the diamond rank the new bronze.
The whole point of ranked is to know if you’re good at the game or not, right? And being good at the game would mean you’re better than 50% of players, right? Well if 60% of players are in diamond, that would mean diamond isn’t a good rank. 343 please fix this.
Yeah I totally agree, its way too hard to derank and too easy to rank up. Soon everyone will be plat/diamond/onyx which is pretty dumb. Rank isnt supposed to be something you just grind for without even getting better. Ranked is supposed to be a measure of your skill not playtime.
I couldn’t agree more. I personally miss the 1-50 ranking system. While it wasn’t perfect, I don’t think this system truly shows a person’s skill. Which is a shame; it seems as though it’s more about your personal gameplay rather than your team play which results in many more selfish plays by teammates.
Imagine 343 taking the 6 years of developement to come up with something meaningful. How rewarding would it be to see at the end of the match:
your personal performance
the team performance
how much you contributed to objectives/kills via assists
if the opponents had a higher or lower skill
special medals
and from all this you can clearly see your rank gain or loss.
Played -Yoink!- yourself? -25 points. Team still won by 10 kills? +30. Overall you rank up
Man, it is so dissapoionting to see that 343 almost did nothing except getting a really good, fundamental gameplay. Which is overall the most important thing, but all the surroundings scream for poor project management or simple laziness.
Completely agree.
Seems like you don’t rank down at all and at most the bar just stays in the same position if you have a bad game?
If you can’t rank down then it feels completely meaningless when you do tank up - rank just seems to be an indication of time spent playing rather than actual skill level?
Also… Where are the stats??? KDA, win percentage, medals earned etc.
Yup. After 10 matches I was put roughly halfway through Platinum 2. Next I lost 4 games in a row being 3 or 4 of my team every single time. My rank went down with about 1/100th of a rank. Then I won 2 games in a row and I went up with 25% of a rank each time becoming Platinum 3. Then I lost two games in a row and my rank didn’t go down.
So winning 2 out of 8 games made me go up a rank by ± 50%. XD What the hell.
Well it depends on how many matches are in the adjustment pool or if they’re on a weekly reset. Some systems work around an interval so if you’re under the threshold and don’t get above that line by the cut-off, then you get plunked down to the middle of the next lower letter grade, etc.
Where as other systems periodically update there thresholds for each rank/subrank. So you might be losing a few matches, but that’s slower degen compared to a metric ton of people losing in ranked to complete the challenge, right at the start of the system. To be honest I wouldn’t be surprised if there was some bad integer math or something hanging up the deranking
Ranking isn’t about “am I good?” it’s about Matching players with others in roughly the same skill level as them so you enjoy a competitive match and yes possibly improve, but just like chasing cosmetics, you really shouldn’t give too much of a crap about your rank/badge. It doesn’t usually translate over to actual competitive play. Are the matches your in blowouts or close? That’s more important, if the system is working you shouldn’t know who’s going to win at the halfway point.
If you want to know if you’re good start going to local tourneys and things like go4’s
I think there may not be enough balance in the ranking system to allow for a proper rank yet. Once the playlist is full of players of all skill levels it may feel better adjusted. Rocket League goes through a similar thing at the beginning of every season.
I do like the idea of individual performance has an impact on your rank, but I think your rank should go down if you lose. Maybe just a less harsh amount if you carried your team and still lost.
Can confirm, had brother do placements on his account with a 1.0 k/D he is Diamond 1. I have a 1.8 and am at Diamond 4.
On top of this even after you have done your placements you continuously get people doing theirs. It is okay every now and again for this top happen, but for a game with this many people, it should not resort to matching people who have completed placements and those who have not. I have seen a team doing placements get rocked and a team doing them dominate vs Diamond 4’s and 5’s.
You really shouldn’t give too much of a crap about your rank/badge. It doesn’t usually translate over to actual competitive play
…What? The entire point of ranked Halo is your rank. Of course you should care. Why would you play ranked otherwise? While you’re right that CSR/MMR is intended to create good matches, it’s absolutely also intended as a measure of your competency. Those are complementary, not mutually exclusive.
<1% of players will ever go to local tournaments, that’s absolutely not what 343 intends to be the only measure of competition. When H5 multiplayer had a substantial playerbase, a full Onyx team would steaktacular a full Diamond team 9 times out of 10. It absolutely translated to level of competition.
Regarding deranking, I’m assuming whatever TrueSkill or engine is dealing with this is taking its time accumulating data since the game is new before getting fully sorted. Agree that it’s very inflated now and nearly impossible to lose rank.
My issue with individual performance is that it promotes selfish players in a team-based game. Yeah, you can still be a main slayer and frag, but it is really frustrating when players are literally just playing slayer in an objective game type. The grind from 1-50 rather than placing caused players of similar skill to play with each other. Half the time, my team is still in their placements and is getting demolished by a team of all D3 and above team. Only time will tell I guess
I dropped from 2.8 to 1.8 k/d doing ranked. Noone was doing obj. It also does not help that I had so many oddball matches and the oddball is not a 1 hit kill. Really makes being the OBJ player suck.
I feel like Ranking is used as a personal metric of progression, or for that of a team, rather than ego gains… which I guess makes it indirectly ego gains lol.
But that being said, I feel there is value to rank outside of just seeking competitive matches. In the strict perspective of competitive games, that rank being accurate is still important. If you’re a team of diamonds getting throttled by a team of platinums, it should be a kick in the nuts to your elo and a boost to theirs. To try to move you closer to a competitive game relative to how/who you just played.
Obviously there exists a line; a player doesn’t want to derank so helplessly fast that it’s discouraging. We just want a happy-medium based on wins/losses, as that’s what it really boils down to.
I actually don’t know why they made any changes from the system implemented in Halo 5. When that game had a relatively healthy population, it was the best ranking system I’d ever experienced. Pretty confused why deranking if effectively broken right now.
I guess add it to the list of the things that 343 polished in H5 and abandoned in the lead-up to Infinite.
When it had a healthy population? You mean like 2018 when more than half the player population left because the ranking system was beyond broken…it had players at gold level in champion and they couldn’t derank…they released an update where you had to win over 90% of your matches to maintain your rank while your csr and mmr converge…and thousands of players hopped off because they seen an onyx or champ on their screen severely derank each loss. They wanted to hold that highlight forever in waypoint and many never got back on…when they did though, it was evident that despite waypoint showing that as their highest rank achieved they were many tiers below it each season afterwards.
After the update…when things started to normalize…in some ways the ranking system worked and in some ways it didn’t . Loopholes definitely existed…which I guess that’s a given, and your personal performance in a match you lost wouldn’t matter. Your csr visually goes down, but your mmr goes up…resulting in tougher matches despite no reflection on your visual rank If you kept losing. A win would skyrocket the progress should it happen, had your personal performance mattered in those losses…you’d be right at that level anyways.
In halo 5, if you join the lobby as the lowest ranked player and win matches with your friends you will hardly budge even if you outperform not only your expected outcome but even the highest ranking players stats. The system takes it that you’re only winning because your high ranked friends. Its slowly gaging if you deserve the rank up or not after several matches. You lost 1 match tho? Here’s half a drop in your current rank. Matter of fact…here’s a rank lock for a bit. Have fun fixing your mmr when you play alone.
There were tons of people under and over ranked man. I dont believe a perfect ranking system exists…but imo your personal performance should matter both win or lose. If you poop the bed well, then you expect the derank in that horrific loss right? Have a 49 to 50 loss tho where you did pretty damn good ? You telling me you want a severe derank for that?..
Is it too forgiving tho? Idk. I’ve done horrible and deranked after a loss, and I’ve also done really good in a loss and didn’t derank. To me it made sense but…maybe you’re wanting the perfect % of how bad do you have to play to get that severe derank or what? Maybe punish for just doing average in a loss but not punish if you over performed and still lost?
Don’t get me wrong about halo 5 tho. I played it a ton and really liked it, but it had some pretty enormous problems man.
