The raised population

Yesterday I had a friend try to tell me that the jump in population is because of ZB and the TU.

No one actually thinks that do they? I love the TU to death but everyone realizes the population growth is from christmas right?

I think the same people that believe that are the same people that think because Reach does not have 300,000 people on at the same time means Reach is junk.

While I think the holiday season is a large portion to the increased numbers there are many factors.

Waypoint
Custom challenges
Increased cR payouts for daily and weekly challenges
multiple TUs addressing community concerns
343i doing a hell of a job
New maps
People coming back from playing all the game de jurs that have been released in the last half year
Christmas vacation
I could go on but Im about to go play some Reach cuase its awesome even if they did nothing else, I personely could continue playing this game until Halo 4s release and be happy =) its a gift.

I think Christmas has more to do with it than anything else.

I hate people who hate Reach I mean it is still a pretty good game. One thing I like about Halo is that it isn’t nearly in any way possible as boring as COD is.

Plunderfull is probably the smartest halo fan to ever be on a halo related forum .

Looking at the contribution of these playlist I would say maybe a 10% increase do to the TU. The rest is the CEA and Christmas bundles. The title update did not bring all those players back,IMO, because it was way to late.

it makes no difference how good the title update is or isnt.

THE MAINSTREAM CASUAL GAMERS LOVE ARCADEY EASY SHOOTERS LIKE COD! Halo cant be #1 unless it does what call of duty does. Its the sad reality but majority of gamers dont want to invest into games anymore. they just want easy kills and a game they dont have to learn alot to be good at -.-

i have noticed a slight increase in population in multi team, squad and team objective since the TU settings where implemented but this is just a shift of players from team slayer to other playlists since team slayers population also dropped a little, by roughly the same amount that these playlists combined increase.

though, the main jump in population is pretty much what plunderfull has already outlined so there is no need for me to repeat, just click that thank button and be on my way.

what tsumiya is trying to say is that the casual player prefers your more pick up and go style game, a game that requires no effort to learn and instead you just pop the game in the xbox, go into multiplayer and start racking up those kills and points with little effort and though to it, this essentially what CoD multiplayer really is, no learning required just mindless killing.

Didn’t Bungie say that’s what they did with Reach? Make it more casual friendly?

i don’t think they actually used the word casual though, looking back at the vid-ocs and how reach is, it appears that they wanted to make reach more noob friendly then casual friendly.

halo is a game that has to be learnt so it is a game for the hardcore players, trying to make halo’s main gameplay casual friendly, gameplay that requires no investment to be successful is never going to work and instead just completely break what people know today as halo and the gameplay that bungie inadvertently created.

i’ll just give you a quick run down on hardcore and casuals

casual = a person who doesn’t invest into a game or have a deeper interest
hardcore = a person who invests a lot into a game and/or has a deeper interest for the game/s.

During Halo 3’s reign what percentage of each do you think made up H3 population?

The TU did jack -Yoink-, how can anyone believe the TU would bring back such numbers? Reach was garbage the moment I tried MM. Well I’ll admit it was decent after 2 months, but after that, it was left in the dark until 343i released that TU.

The TU was good, no denying that fact, but remember, only a small minority requested this. The others either gave up on this BS of a game or some don’t care.

Why don’t Halo 3 get some love once in a while? There is a population still living on that game, you know.

I don’t understand why Gears 3 never did so well. 8th, -Yoink-!

Its obviously christmas + CEA which basically re-released a small section of reach matchmaking.

I think i can confidently say that MLG jumping from 500 to 1300 or so was pretty much all TU though. Still ive never seen it over about 1400 so it hardly has the legion majority following in the community that some would have us believe. Off-peak even grifball still regularly pulls in more than MLG

percentage? no idea

i would say that the majority of halo 3’s population before CoD game around was casual but after CoD arrived the casual players migrated over to CoD because of the lack of investment needed, the casuals that stayed with halo 3 kept mostly to stupid infection custom games leaving the majority of halo 3’s population more hardcore then casual.

The time between halo 3’s late years and reach is when COD took over. Halo 3 still had lots of casuals because it had the hype of being the "last game in the trilogy’’ thats why it did well against CODMW1. However MW2 Black ops and now MW3 completely took over the casual audience.

It wasnt Halo: Reach’s fault the casual gamers went to COD, its the fact that casual gamers care more about feeling good about skill they dont have, rather than actually investing in the game.

Why do you think league of legends is doing so well? Its just a DOTA clone right? but guess what, its watered down and easy so people LOVE spending hours on it.

Thats how it is with shooters, cod is a watered down easy shooter thats why it will be #1 majority of the time… Halo will remain skill based WHICH IS GOOD however it wont bet the easy games like cod thanks to the trend cod started =.= The trend is, “Make the same easy watered down multiplayer over and over and sell millions”

I dont want halo to do this. I want halo to keep evolving while keeping its core fast fun and unique style =)

Both Team Objective and Multi-Team doubled in size after the update. Objective was always around 250-300 people and now there’s 650-700. Multi-Team was always 800-900 and now it’s 1600-1700. MLG is 7 times larger. MLG was around 250-300 and now its around 1700-2000. There are also probably many more people playing custom games as well, especially the MLG crowd, who are still a little salty that the MLG playlist isn’t ranked.

I would say the TU had a little more to do with the population increase than you think, but you’re right about the holidays having a substantial effect as well.

I’m just going to point out that we have an advantage over Cod. The company who owns it is Activision. Activision owned Guitar hero, they made the genius decision of milking it, one game per yea and we all know how that game went.

Now, they are doing the same thing with the lovely game we all came to love cough Cod cough

with mw3 out now, you have to ask yourself where they are going to go.

Its going to be like the end of H3 all over again and i’m not sure they are going to be able to reboot the series that well.

Wattered down shooters don’t last long, the hardcore are the ones who last for long, thats why halo had a ten years anniversary you just have to wait and watch.

I dislike people who hate people who hate Reach. Why hate someone because they have a highly negative opinion of a video game?

I dislike Reach as well. I only play it for Forge, Custom Games, and Title Update Matchmaking.

If you have eyes and watch the market, it will tell you everthing you need to know, CoD is number one, what are they doing that Halo isnt beside using a more modern realistic military setting vs the sci-fi look of Halo? When you see that for your self then you will understand that we are not making the rules, players go where they want, we can only watch and make summations.
