The Radar Discussion Thread

Hello everyone! This thread is to discuss your thoughts and opinions on the radar. The radar has been a key element to Halo since day one. Due to the past couple of updates and news, 343 is trying to tweak Halo 5’s radar to everyone’s liking. Many people are not too happy with the 18m Radar used in Halo 5. Some are content with the current radar’s range.

This is what I mostly see from feedback:
Pros- Remove Radar
Casual Players- Extend Range of Radar

Here are my possible solutions:

  1. Extend Radar for Social Arena. (Team Skirmish) Up to 25m or more.
  2. Remove Radar from Ranked Team Arena and possibly other Ranked Playlists.
  3. Remove Spartan Charge from Ranked Arena. (Not completely radar-based, but can make the radar not useful at times.)

If you have any solution or ideas, please leave them down below.

Thank you for your time.

Removing the Radar would add a new layer of awareness, but Halo has always had the radar present. I’m not a Pro/Competitive player but i think removal of the radar would change the way the game is played. For the better, im not entirely sure.

When Halo 5 was first introduced, I disliked the 18m range of the radar, but over time I’ve gotten used to it. I back your possible solutions, having the radar reduced to 18m in Ranked and bumped up to 25m, or if enough feedback is given, remove the radar from ranked altogether.

Removing the Motion Sensor would cause more harm than good, IMO. First off, unlike Halo CE-Reach, Halo 5 has sprint in its competitive gameset, thus making it extremely easy to just run around the map sneaking up behind enemies. In this scenario, being able to dodge a Spartan Charge would be virtually impossible. One of the most rewarding things in Halo 5 is getting a ninja on an opponent who tries to SC you. Not only would removing the radar kill that technique, but it would also require your teammates to constantly check up on you to see if someone is sprinting or not, therefore slowing down the pace of the game. That’s the exact opposite of the independant map control in Halo CE and 2.

On the other hand, extending the radar back to the 25 meter range would bring back the excellent memories of rifle camping from Halo 4, where nearly every match players would go the choke points on the maps (Exile is a great map, but it was plagued with farming because of this), quickly degenerating the game as a whole. This would even hurt the social aspect of Halo 5, especially in the vehicle front in BTB – take a look at the Banshee, for instance. It is already nearly as powerful as its Reach counterpart. An “awareness buff” would be a huge problem in most games.

Of course, my opinion is still open for further discussion. Tell me if you disagree with something.

I get your standpoint on Spartan Charge without radars. It would definitely be used a lot. One of the things that I suggested is remove radars and Spartan Charge from Ranked Arena. Spartan Charge would stay in Social Arena, but everyone has extended radars. As for the Banshee, it simply needs a cooldown timer for dodging and rolls.

I’d like to see radar removed in the competitive arena playlists, but only if spartan charge is tweaked/removed as well. Otherwise it’ll just turn into a game of people charging around corners.

Yeah, I’ve been recently playing CG with my friends using without radar and no Spartan Charge, and no radar and Spartan Charge. And without SC, it plays better IMO.

I’m not a fan of any solution that changes core mechanics from one playlist to the next. That’s bad for the players.

Spartan Charge on its own is a necessary mechanic given sprint, but it’s simply too strong right now. It shouldn’t be stronger than a standard melee, and it should be tougher to land.

Am I the only one who thinks it’s fine the way it is?

If you widen the range, it’ll promote more campy and crouch walking type combat (Halo 4). And if you get rid of radar entirely, what Vinicius Nerd said.

The one question I would have for those that think radar should be removed… Doesn’t that remove a certain element from the game? Since Halo 2 I can remember crouching with a shotgun because I knew there was someone above me and I didn’t want them to know I was creeping to go toast them. To me that’s just always been a part of Halo.

I personally would like the radar to be extended to 25m and remove Spartan Charge. But I see many people (if not more) ask to remove the radar completely. Reasons to me are unknown, but for the past Halos, most MLG playlists had the radar removed…

I liked how the H4 radar worked, I just wish it was less distance

When it comes to team arena scrap the radar. It’s been asked for since launch. Everything else I ultimately don’t care about but I’d honestly prefer the radar stay 18m. Does anyone not remember how the beta radar worked? You could see people across the map, that’s how bad it was. I believe it should really be something that tells you when someone is actually near or above/below you.

I liked how it showed whether someone was either above you, or below you with the arrows. It was somewhat hard to see though.

I think halo would be weird if it didn’t have a radar. It would be silly for Spartans to have tech then for some strange reason the tech is gone.

I feel the same way with Spartan abilities and equipment. It’s stupid to of had them then to not to have them. I think with advanced movement and equipment it would be an amazing game. Right now overwatch and titanfall 1-2 are the best shooters to me but I feel Halo would have it if there was mequipment and more abilities.

The best I can think of in terms of improving the radar. Have a short range through walls but a longer radar that requires 360 degrees of line of site.
