While aiming is a foundation in Halo’s gunplay, I can’t stress how many times I could position better than an enemy, only for them to flip out then 360 grenade, grapple away faster than me turning. Even before I did controller, M&K just feels much better driving vehicles and being on a turret, especially can fly the Banshee faster. In addition, I did the coop beta legendary campaign run and I always outlived my friends just because I went M&K.
I just feel like the natural movement is destroyed by crossplay when both types of players are together. Even then, M&k doesn’t shoot that bad either so I feel like they generally dominate casual play. Im sure crossplay will be an option one day eventually, but 343i knows they can’t do that currently without stretching the game’s population.
As a MnK player I will say the lack or red reticle is annoying. And the aiming itself is weird. At the same time, using turrets and vehicles just feel unfair.
I’m a strong controller gyro-aim supporter. I played doom 2016 on the Switch with Gyro aiming and it changed how I like controllers. It is hard for me to go back. I wish Microsoft would get with the program and add gyro to their controllers and games. So far most informal studies show it is the best way to bridge the MnK and controller gap. As crossplay becomes more standard, controller people need to have a way to meet MnK players without horrible aim assist. The lack of gyro is the only reason I’m not playing Infinite on a controller in the first place.
Id rather let as many people know about it first. Literally going to a game that made me realize I forgot to mention that M&K are just better flick shots with snipers. I always do controller but when I go to the shooting range, my aim is just phenomenal just quick shooting with a sniper. Even in a regular game.
You totally just took every point I made and disregarded it out the window. This isn’t about some form of discrimination I’m talking about here on who is better. I am talking about the balancing issue.
Making sarcastic remarks is also just completely not following my thread. If you think I’m talking about some form of “better PC setup” or “better rank” is also not something I even said. I even typed it in my thread…
I don’t care if you play M&K. I care that the flow of combat is broken because its combined with the controller. Other main problems follow it such as cheaters and connection issues too. But if those were resolved, the flow of gameplay is still lost.
The whole point of the matchmaking system is to match people based on equal skill, so it doesn’t matter which input is better for 99% of players.
If you’re a 5/10 kNm player you should do as well as a 5/10 controller player. The main issue lies with the maximum possible skill level that can be achieved on both inputs. With aim assist the argument is that controller has an unfair advantage…in reality though it doesn’t make a difference to the overwhelming majority of the playerbase.
People just complain about crossplay when they lose to someone who has higher aim assist, or has quicker “right stick” movement than their chosen input allows. Blocking one or the other off only serves to reduce the player base further, makes games harder to find, and increases ping and therefore melee phasing, around corner deaths; what is frequently called “desync”
So, with respect, crossplay is fine. I rarely notice when I am playing KNM players and when I do, it’s just a thing I take note of when I confront that player the second time.
343’s first priority is to make both feel good. Then tweak them to make their population rank curves match up. Check that a Platinum 3 on one goes 50:50 with a Platinum 3 on another. That a Platinum 3 on one goes 25:75 with a Diamond 3 on the other (and vice versa)
For every thread that espouses one as over powered there is another one claiming the exact opposite.
As @Moist_Morsel has pointed out it doesn’t really matter except for those on the very far right of the population curve.
This I agree with. For all 343i’s faults, they have put a lot of time into making the PC experience feel like a PC experience - with bigger monitors, ultra wide, etc, you’re going to need look sens and FOV sliders and all of this stuff to be different.
I don’t quite agree with this but I understand what you’re saying.
I think they’ve tested it to see if it feels good and that’s it; otherwise there wouldn’t be ANY disparity between the two. The reason it doesn’t matter is just down to where you are ranked; not so much if the controls are fair enough and balanced enough for a person who is hypothetically equally as good on controller to have exactly the same rank if they were to play on KNM. This is a metric that would take too much time to measure and, because of the way the algorithm works with matchmaking, a largely pointless endeavour.
Ultimately a gold 5 is a gold 5 regardless of input. If they switch input they may get a higher or lower rank; because they’ll be better on one than the other. The fact stands though - even if they were hypothetically as good on one as they were on the other their ranks would change accordingly and therefore they would still be playing people in the same bracket and at a fair skill level.
At least - this is how it should work but there are limitations with the ranking system that mostly stem from small population numbers. Focussing on input “equality” isn’t going to boost them numbers, which is what the game needs, and if the game GETS what it needs there will be no need for the inputs to be tweaked further because the algorithms will work properly.
