The progression system will kill the game before it even launches

I played 20 matches of Big Team Battle last night and focused on winking instead of the challenges. The result was that I barely reached rank 2 on the Battlepass.

There is absolutely no incentive right now to play the objective and that really needs to be addressed for a healthy matchmaking experience.

MCC did a great job, the foundation is there.

I was the first of my friends to do the vidmaster challenges in Halo 3/ODST. I got all the achievements in Halo 3, I got all 13 hidden skulls in Halo 3’s campaign. Not because I found these things fun, some of these were very VERY annoying. But because the reward was worth it. Security armor, Hayabusa armor, the katana, Recon!

Rewarding your player for time invested is how you keep your players invested. Something infinite is failing at right now.

6-8 hours a day won’t sustain over a week. There are only like 15 weekly challenges and then your exp is limited to your daily games. If you play 6-8 hours over 2-3 days, you are done for the week, honestly.

I am so excited that Halo Infinite dropped yesterday. I have been a fan since 2005 playing Halo 2 on a CRT on the original XBL.

I love the gameplay and customization of Infinite however, I really want a different ranking system. I wish we got XP for just playing matches instead of just challenges. Also I miss our nameplates showing our ranks (currently MCC has emblems and Halo 5 has the numbered ranks on the nameplates) Infinite doesn’t show our ranks at all. I hope this changes!

The lack of a non battle pass system in favor of a paid progression system is a stab in the back to us. I understand making money on a free to play game. But to not include any form of progression with rank ups is singlehandedly the worst decision made for a Halo game. Halo’s rank system has been iconic since Halo 2 and for them to say we are looking into feedback is the dumbest thing I have seen. Of course we want it, no one has ever said they don’t want it. It is clear they are valuing profits over their playerbase. I used to grind out my ranks for hours upon hours, but with this system I might play 3-4 games a day if that, and I damn sure wont buy anything from the shop aside from the battlepass.

Agreed. It needs to change sooner or later to keep people interested.

Well it’s also because a lot of people don’t want to be forces to play objective games. It should have two playlists. A lot of people I know don’t even want to play because of this

This progression system is not a logical system and therefore will result in players ignoring progression, thus taking away a component of the game that keeps players coming back.
A progression system like Halo 3 would be the best option IMO, where you have to play more, win games, and rank up in competitve matches in order to determine your ‘rank’.

I agree completely with you.
But this is kind of par for the course with 343. This is their way of continuing the trend of making a team game not for teams.
It started with Halo 5 and the zero BtB support and removal of 12 person teams in a 12 person gametype.
Now in Infinite you have your BtB with large teams, but multitudes of things encouraging you to actively play on your own, whether it’s
challenges, competition over certain weapons or other things.

Challenges are trash as well, I have a challenge that says I have to kill an enemy Spartan by flattening them with a repulsor. How do I even?

I guess I can forget about getting the “Ultimate” challenge, unless I fork over a bunch of money for swaps. This is ridiculous.

I wouldn’t say the game is DOA, but I did express similar concerns last week, and yesterday those concerns were realized.

The game is amazing–they nailed it–but the progression system is terrible. People will 100% quickly grow bored, even with an amazing game, without rewarding ways to progress.

We have the battle pass, and I’m okay with progression through the battle pass being slow (I wouldn’t want to blow through it in a week), but there needs to be progression and unlockables outside of the paid-battlepass. Call of Duty does it expertly with their weapon ranks and weapon camo challenges. Those free progression systems, totally separate from their battle pass, give players a reason to play the game. They are addictive and rewarding.

Halo absolutely needs something similar ASAP or players will grow bored with it quick;y. Just a massive oversight on their part.

I posted this after the feedback 343 shared:

I get that everyone wants live service games that constantly have new things to go work towards, as well as the desire for devs to use it as a way to monetize the game, but I’m not a fan of most battle passes with a lot of progression management. I know I’m the minority, but I’ll share my opinion anyway. I just don’t have the time or desire to manage battle passes and want to earn XP/currency for all accomplishments anytime I’m playing. I want simplicity to be able to see what I can unlock (and how to earn it) in the armory spartan customization UI where I can directly preview, unlock, and equip things. I really don’t want a separate battle pass UI or store UI - just make it seamless and label where/how things became available to me in the armory.

While I’m probably the minority, 343 would have this kind of MP progression in my ideal world:

  • Career stats with an XP-based rank
  • Seasonal competitive skill-based rank
  • A simple system where you earn both XP and “armory credits” (currency) for everything you do: kills, assists, captures, defends, MP wins, challenge completions, etc. Armory credits can even be super simple, like you get 1 for every N XP points earned. Credits get spent to unlock things in the armory and XP just accumulates for your career stats and rank.
  • For battle passes, have them unlock more items to earn as well as new, unique challenges to earn some of them (rather than being entirely currency based). This keeps things simple where I’m not managing battle passes, where XP goes, and challenges. Rather, I’m just deciding if I want the battle pass or not, then simply customizing my spartan as I choose from that one armory UI: previewing, unlocking, and equipping items via currency or challenges that are available from the battle pass I got.
  • If I want to maximize my progression, I can choose to dig into the challenges system.

If 343 needs a more immediate fix, I suggest they constantly have active challenges for things like number of kills, assists, matches played, etc.

It’s fun till the new game shine wears off. People who play these game long term are almost exclusively people grinding for stuff. You may be the exception but in general without something to grind towards games fall off fast.

I’d be happy if they brought back classic Halo leveling/progression system. Sheit, I’d be happy with Reach’s leveling system if anything. The amount of times I’ve absolutely slayed in matches only to get ZERO exp towards that is really unsatisfying short term, and in the long run. I really hope they rework the progression system soon, cause the Battlepass leveling isn’t cutting it, and should be it’s own thing while we carry our own personal level like in almost every other shooter game before this Battlepass hypetrain started.

If they at least let us choose specific game modes for the corresponding challenges that would help the problem short term. But as it is right now playing game modes I don’t want to play and having them give no XP progression towards the battle pass I already paid for feels awful. This only benefits 343

I’m not the biggest fan either. Some of them are too specific. Capture a flag… I haven’t gotten a CTF match yet.

normal players are not addicts like many of us… 6-8h a day isnt normal benchmark

I feel like a snail trying to pull a grape, instead of a big one…A very big grape.

Another sad thing is even if you do buy your way to the top of the season pass you still have to do the challenges if you want to get the weekly ultimate challenge.
