The problem with the Golden Triangle (?Vehicles?)

So there is an argument about armor abilities advanced movement and gameplay balance (mostly for competitive MLG play). The biggest argument against Armor Abilities is that it breaks the Golden Triangle (guns, grenades, melee). But the Golden Triangle has already been broken, the Warthog, the Ghost, the Scorpion and every vehicle and even turrets that has been added into the game. The golden triangle does not take those things into account.

Now vehicles have suffered from the advanced movement (if you can run faster without a vehicle then you don’t need one). But we are not talking about advanced movement, we are talking about how do vehicles fit in the cyclical balance of multiplayer in which the golden triangle implies. Perhaps we need a golden pentagon (or maybe eve a golden heptagram) if we are talking about balance here. To me the Golden Triangle only focuses on a small nearly insignificant part of Halo multiplayer game play. We got in addition to weapons, grenades, melee, there is also classes (spartan/elite), equipment/abilities, vehicles, heavy weapons, and aircraft all in the same competitive setting. Why do we focus on only 1/3 of the multiplayer mechanics in the name of MLG?

“The golden triangle” is just a buzz phrase often used to obscure more meaningful and concrete design principles, such as the idea that players should be able to perform combat actions when they are running around. It’s not at all your fault not knowing that vehicles have nothing to do with this idea, because the people who like to talk about “the golden triangle” rarely bother to specify what they are actually talking about. After all, using the phrase and the infinite authority of Bungie that comes with it feels way more impressive than actually explaining yourself clearly, and it also takes less effort. The problem with the golden triangle is that it means whatever the person talking about it wants it to mean, and it often means different things to different people.

In case you were wondering: yes, I do dislike the phrase very much.
